Anyone else living near UP hear that crazy loud noise last night? Around 4-4:30 am. It sounded sort of like an airplane flying low, but really steady (it didn't get louder or quieter as if a plane were passing overhead) and lasted for half an hour or so. Something from Swan Island, maybe? It was really weird.

I used to hear that same noise when I was at UP. I think it's coming from the industrial park below the bluff. I don't know what they do down there, exactly...I thought it might be a warehouse venting or something? The one I live by now does that sometimes...turns on these giant fans randomly and blows god-knows-what fumes into the air.

Then again, lasting for half an hour...that's odd. Hmm.

Could it be a train? I work in an industrial area and some of the trains that go by sound like planes sometimes.

I don't think so... I mean, I've heard trains go by a lot and they have a pretty distinct sound (both the horn and the sound of the wheels on the track.) I suppose it could have been a train horn, but it went on for half an hour, so that doesn't seem likely. It was just really weird.

It was the satellite crashing that will awaken the Cloverfield monster.

Around there, it could just about be anything. Union Pacific has a yard in Swan Island and up towards the expo center, plus a tunnel connecting the two cutting straight across North Portland (and they say subways aren't possible in Portland... bullcrap, we already have the MAX through the west hills and Amtrak through North Portland running underground, no reason we can't do it in other parts of town). Also down on Swan Island is a MAJOR Freightliner fabrication plant and equally massive UPS and FedEx depots.

Kind of weird passing the Columbia Junction end of the tunnel and looking south. You can see clear across North Portland straight to Swan Island through the tunnel from Columbia Boulevard.
