Two More.
- I need to replace wheels on a small suitcase. Okay, it's a rolling backpack (don't make fun of me, this gun is loaded). Where would I look for something that random? I don't think skateboard wheels will fit it, which was my first thought. My back injury forces me to use this thing to cart my stuff around PSU all day, and I want something less loud and annoying.

- My little sister's laptop is... broken. It only displays a black screen of death and says something about a disk failure before rebooting itself in an endless loop. Is this a fix-it issue or a buy-a-new-laptop issue? If it's the former, does anyone want to fix it for cheap/trade? I can bake the most delicious cookies and truffles in all the land, I'm a good photographer, and my sister does awesome hair. Help some poor but otherwise totally awesome chicks out.

Can't help you with the wheels, but how old is the laptop, and does your sister have the software discs to re-install her operating system and programs with?

It sounds like all the laptop will need is a new 2.5" hard drive, but if the machine is old and the software can't be re-installed, it might be more cost-effective to purchase a new laptop.

The laptop is only about a year old. It's an Alienware something-or-other. I have OS disks (XP and Vista) to use.

I know basically nothing about fixing hardware on laptops. So while I'm asking, how would I go about upgrading the ram on my HP I just got? Vista + Photoshop CS3 + Whatever = Infuriatingly Slow Computer Which 2 GB of Ram Does Not Support

it sounds like the laptop would totally be worth looking into a repair for, and as [info]derumi noted, it would probably just need a new disk (not too expensive, designed to be replaced). you should check the model # and search for what kind of disk it wants--it's probably a 2.5" disk as specified, but they come in different thicknesses and usually you want to replace it with the same thickness so it fits, and snugly. my thinking is it should be under $100 if you buy it from somewhere online and don't get the hugest one you can find.

if you post a model # for the alienware rig and yours, you'd probably find someone like me who's willing to do that research for you on exactly what to buy. but model #s are key, here.

Portland Luggage, on the corner of 4th and Washington.
They repair luggage (they replaced the zipper on my favorite backpack), and have a bundle of rolling bags. I'm sure they have to fix those kinds of things all the time.

Fantastic! I'll give them a call. I hope they have variety in their wheel department. Everyone seems to prefer plastic ones, but I'm partial to rubber since they're less noisy. (I'm telling you because I'm sure you were wondering. My roller-backpack is really popular.)

Thanks!

Well, my instinct is that they're the best in the business. If anyone has options, it'd be them.
My backpack had a built in stereo, and I have it on my bike, so I couldn't just scrap it and get a new one, and they totally found a way to salvage it. Cost me $25 bucks, but they replaced the zippers on it, and fixed the rigging too. Very capable.

you can also check with a skate shop if the luggage place can't help.
if skateboard wheels won't fit, inline wheels likely will.
