Oh Wise Dp-ers
I recently wrote my Grandmother a letter.

She responded in kind, and left this as the post script.

P.S.
Julia, writing so many notes and letters this year, you should know that nicknames are not (underlined) appropriate and correct titles are, especially on the envelope. check your library for Lititia Baldridge's "New Manners for New Times" Pages 652-654.

Does anyone have this book, and somehow know what she is talking about?

I surely did not address the letter "old Cantankerous Bat" or anything. She's my grandma! Help!

Woah. I know a lot of people grandmothers address their envelopes as "Mrs. Joseph Jalopy-McFresh" or whatever, even if said Josephs aren't around anymore.. could this have been what she meant?

Regardless, she certainly wasn't very "appropriate" in the way she pointed this out.

Google "Baldrige new manners for new times"... p653 is missing, but the other two are in the Google Books result!

Unless she has a nice inheritance, politely remind her to STFU and enjoy the fact that you took the time out to write.

If there is a nice inheritance well then, find the damn book!

I've been pondering etiquette, and the loss of, these days. I haven't read that particular book, but I've been looking up Emily Post a bit (it's hilarious), and this might give you an inkling:

http://www.bartleby.com/95/27.html

Although it seems like if she's your grandma, it would be okay to use a nickname. Is grandma a nickname?

Oh man. I've actually sent my grandmother cards addressed to "Crazy Old Italian Woman" and "I Never Get Cards Bagley" before. In fact, I rarely address letters to people using their actual names. It's a strange habit. I change my name in the return address as well.

I hope your grandma appreciates that not only does she have a loving granddaughter who writes to her on a regular basis, but one who is actually taking the time to accomodate her somewhat antiquated sense of etiquette! Kudos to you for being such an awesome person.

My grandmother is happy I don't correct her when she writes to me as "Miss..." (I'm not 5, grandma), so she wouldn't dare correct me.

However, I'm one of the only grandchildren that write her on a regular basis, so she really can't complain.

Of course the biggest etiquette gaffe of all is to call attention to someone else's gaffe so HAHA grandma loses!

My DH's grandmother wants letters addressed to her real first and last name, then inside we can write "dear grandma". Must be that gerneration!

I have had a package to a friend returned to me by the post office because I used a nickname and no last name on the address.

Apparently the USPS is big on etiquette too.

I write letters addressed to people's real first and last names, but I don't use titles except in professional settings. I guess if I were writing wedding invitations I might, but... just a letter to your grandma? That's way old fashioned.

If she hadn't underlined "not," I wouldn't have been so bothered by it. Also, the fact that she says "especially," meaning she's referring to any time other than addressing envelopes sits wrong with me.

I could see it as not rude if she was just talking about envelopes, though.

Hmph. Old people. I deal with some crazy rude ones at work.

Etiquette Nazism is as bad as Grammar Nazism, and it has its own ironic twist - pointing out alleged bad manners in a rude way is just as bad as committing an etiquette violation.

Grandparents can be quirky sometimes.

I had a great-grandma who had quite the mouth on her. She never seemed to care what we addressed her as, but she would say the most insanely rude things out of nowhere. I remember one time in specific when she told my sister she needed to get a haircut, only with a few more words attached.

I think the synapses in her brain were getting a little corroded.

You know, maybe I'm a bad person, but if *my* grandmother did that to me (and she knows me better than to do that), I *would* address the next letter as:
Old Cantankerous Bat
Rocking Chair Near the Fire
1 Address St
City, State spelled out, zip code with 4 digits
USA

and I wouldn't even mention the book or anything about the PS at all.

But, after having looked up the book on amazon - my god, that woman is frickin nuts (not your grandmother, I'm sure, but the author). She insists it's everyone's *CIVIC RESPONSIBILITY* to ENFORCE model manners, and those who don't are terrorists. (Ok, maybe I'm paraphrasing a little, but only a little.)
