Dayshift 42: Mountain Antiques - Noon
Time certainly did fly when one had a gorgeous guitar in hand. In fact Klavier wasn't even aware of the time or his own rising hunger. Personal health was always a top priority, but he had been deprived of both music and playable instruments for several days now. Days. His soul had been starving far longer than his stomach. His body could survive a little bit longer. It was a fair exchange for the astounding feeling of peace and relaxation a little playing could grant.

And so he continued playing, strumming beautifully, perfectly, along the strings and humming a little something along with the music.

Momo was quite pleased to be away from ZEX. She had no interest in any of that kind of attention. In fact, she really didn't want any kind of attention. It was sad that such a friendly and social shinigami had been reduced to the shell she was now. Momo rarely ever sought solitude as she didn't like silence. When things were silent, the truths in her head and her heart screamed out to her now that she no longer had Tobiume to fill her mind. Perhaps it was this wish for solitude without the accompanying silence that has drawn the diminutive woman to the antique shop.

A beautiful melody curled around her as she entered the building. Whomever was playing the music clearly had a love for it and talent to go with it. She spotted the man with the guitar, but chose not to speak with him. She would just enjoy the music that allowed her to avoid the thoughts that silence would have dredged up.

Momo slowly walked around the shop, casually looking over the unique items before her eyes set upon the stuffed tiger behind the counter. Stopping, she rest her hands on the counter top and tilted her head. What an odd item, even in a place like this. Someone must place a measure of importance upon the toy feline.

As much as he enjoyed the weather outside, he wanted to look around a little before the day was out. He wasn't particularly hungry, though he saw many of the patients heading for the restaurants around town. A drink would've been nice, but in this place, he'd a feeling he'd get chased out pretty darn quick, just like the last couple times.

He stopped in one of the relatively empty shops, Mountain Antiques. It reminded him a little of Yuuko's shop. A place where old things were kept, all of varying value, but once precious to someone. Unfortunately, he wouldn't find the missing seal, Kurogane's sword, or Sakura's memories here. Still, it was kind of nostalgic to look over the items.

Momo was doing the same, not far from him, and it seemed rude to just ignore her, so he took a few steps closer, glancing at the tiger she seemed so interested in before looking back at her.

"You like cats?"

Momo hadn't noticed Fai's approach until he spoke. She jumped just a little and turned enough toward him so she could finally see him.

"Depends on the cat," she replied. "This one seems a bit out of place. I wonder what its story is?" A part of her imagined if this was what Haineko looked like.

"I guess that's true. Some are sweet and cute, but it's easy to forget they have claws too," he shrugged, leaning forward on the counter and looking lazily at the tiger. It was interesting how he and Momo seemed to be on a similar wavelength, at least when it came to the objects in the shop.

"It looks nice, either way," he offered. At least it wasn't as large as the statues in front of Rekord's library. And not likely to come to life like those ones either.

At least, it wasn't going to come to life during the day...

"It does, though I think I've been here too long, Fai-chan," Momo replied quietly. "I'm starting to look at everything as being a cover or symbol for something we've lost or part of the mystery that holds us here."

She nodded toward the stuffed tiger. "Like, what if Landel had taken the shinigami's zanpakutou and hidden it in plain sight, just under a powerful illusion that makes us think we've been cut off from it. One of the shinigami's zanpakutou has a cat-like shape. What if this tiger we are looking at is really her soul cutter, but we're too taken by the illusion to realize it's there?"

Yuuhi was probably the last person she ought to be asking about the dubious reality of this world. His hold on it wavered from day to day and he often thought of just how easy it would be to accept that life that Robin had. He couldn't completely separate himself from either reality and while he knew the medicine he'd been taking had adverse affects, if the doctors prescribed it, if it meant he'd be released just one day sooner, he would take it.

"I hadn't thought of it like that," he admitted, focusing his attention on some of the other items that were for sale. No sign of anything he recognized at least. "Anything is possible. But that would be quite the trick."

"So is taking a death god's power and sealing it away in a flesh body," Momo replied, so quiet it might have been meant only for herself.

"It's like the ruined town outside the institute, to the east. It's just another piece to the puzzle, another mystery that is either there to make us focus on something unimportant or may actually contain a clue, but Landel believes it's either too cleverly hidden or we're too inferior to discover it."

"I don't know which to believe..." Momo looked up at Fai, and her words trailed off. "What happened to your eye?"

While he felt bad that Momo was taking everything so hard, he didn't know what he could say to fix it. For all he knew, she was absolutely right and he was simply taking the easy way out. Like he always had.

"It's nothing," he was quick to wave off her concern over his eye. "Just happens sometimes."

"Anyway, I don't know if I'm the best person to ask about all that. It sounds like you might be on to something, but I can't say I'm much help." Usually he could sense when things were amiss in the realm of magic, but here he couldn't be certain. He rarely paid much attention anymore. "It seems like there's a lot of people trying to solve it all on the bulletins though. There's a lot more things being shared I think."

"Ah," the vice captain replied, accepting the unusual color of Fai's eye.

Turning back to the tiger, Momo sighed and rest her elbows on the counter. "I can't get those organized groups involved; I've stepped away from Arts & Crafts. I just... I guess I feel lost. Do you ever feel like that?"

Momo didn't ask anything further about his eye, which was something of a relief. Truth be told, the change bothered him, though it was less the physical aspect and more the thought that it was causing other changes that weren't as obvious. The last time he'd used his magic, it felt like something was tearing up his insides. Since then he'd felt weaker, magic aside. He wasn't sure he wanted to think about what it meant.

Though he didn't know what to say, he could understand some of what Momo was going through. While he kept Lost and Found organized (if one could really call it that), people rarely responded and when they did, it was usually negative. He was glad to hear from them, to know they were still alive and well, but at the same time, sometimes it was better to close it all out and play pretend.

"It must be difficult for you," he replied, fiddling with his hands and seldom looking up at her. "But I'm sure everyone here feels like that from time to time."

A strained chuckle came from the shinigami.

"I doubt they feel like I do, but it's a nice thought that someone might empathize," she replied, believing that being around the organized groups, the people she cared about, would only lead to their deaths. "I'm not used to being alone like this, and yet it's of my own choice."

The more Momo told him, the more he felt like a hypocrite saying anything at all. He chose to isolate himself, to smile and laugh as if nothing were wrong, all while keeping his heart far removed from the people around him. He wasn't supposed to get attached.

"Momo? Did something happen?" he asked, hesitating for a moment. Why would Momo choose to be alone? It didn't make sense. "I'm sure your friends don't want you to feel alone."

"A lot of things happened," Momo replied. "I'm broken, Fai-chan. I only bring pain and death to those I care about. I am a liability, so I left. To keep them safe."

She sighed. "They don't understand my decision, but I didn't expect them too."

Pain and death. The room felt much warmer and there was a tightness in his chest, though he kept smiling faintly. Just like before. The twins would only bring pain and death and destruction wherever they went. In his case, he'd left too late. Even now, he couldn't quite tear himself away. It wasn't that he expected anything in return, but he couldn't force himself not to care about them. He had to keep his distance.

It was that same reasoning that kept him from acting here and now. He could put his arms around her and tell her it would be alright. That it didn't matter and that people would care about her no matter what. But he couldn't. Because he was broken too.

"I understand running away," he said finally, running a hand through his hair in a slow motion, mostly to cover his face. He couldn't promise the mask wouldn't crack. It hurt somehow, knowing that someone else had to feel the same way he did. The trouble was that here, no matter how hard he ran or how far he made it, he couldn't escape it.

"But that can't be right Momo. You can't blame yourself for the things that happen to people here. It's not your fault," he tried, but the words sounded so trite. He meant them, but he knew he couldn't apply them in his own life either. He was a hypocrite, but even pushed this far, he couldn't force himself to speak from his own experiences.

Was Momo running away? She didn't think so. She was keeping people safe by staying away. This way when the Noah came for her, she'd be alone. She wouldn't be sending people to places where they will get hurt. That wasn't running away, was it?

"You don't understand," she stated in a quiet voice. "I can blame myself because a knight, a close friend, died protecting me. She was following orders - orders I had given her to make sure I stayed alive." Deep inside it stung to hear the words come out of her mouth, especially since the knight had chosen to follow her that night.

"The man I loved died because I let him go someplace dangerous alone. I can't even heal anymore; I ended up hurting a human instead of healing him. I can only create death and destruction. I have every reason to blame myself."

Maybe Momo was right. He did have a hard time understanding. But someone had cared about Momo enough to give their life protecting her. And the other had run off alone. Yuuhi looked down, feeling chastised despite how softly she'd said the words.

"I'm sorry," he said after a moment. While no one would ever die trying to protect him, he knew how helpless he'd felt when he learned that Kurogane had been hurt when he'd gone off alone. But there was nothing that could be done now to change it. Time couldn't reverse itself, but... couldn't the dead be brought back to life? Wasn't that what he'd been searching for this entire time?

But shinigami existed to stop that from happening. Rukia had told him that much. He knew his goal would bring him enemies, but it never seemed to hit home until he met them face to face.

"So am I," Momo replied softly.

"Tell me, Fai-chan, what would you do if someone you loved had died and then was alive once more before you?" Her thoughts had turned to Hitsugaya. "This person... You know he is the same person that had died - you can feel it deep inside - yet, he wasn't the same person that had died." She looked up. "What would you do?"

If his brother Fai was alive again and right before him? He'd replayed it so many times in his dreams that he wasn't sure where to start. Would he embrace his brother? Or beg to be forgiven? Would Fai even want to see him?

"It wouldn't matter to me," he said, after a long moment of silence, "what they used to be or what happened in our past. I just know I would never want to leave their side again." If Fai was alive again, nothing else mattered. No other unhappiness or curse or anything could hurt them, so long as they were together.

It was more than he should've said though. And for a few moments Yuuhi contemplated bolting for the door or excusing himself, but that would only make him all the more suspicious.

If they were forced apart again? Yuuhi would do everything he could to keep history from repeating itself. If he and Fai were together again, he'd do everything he could to keep things that way. He didn't want to even think about the possibility of separation.

"I don't think I could bear it," he said finally, the mask gone, replaced by a somber expression. It only lasted a moment, but it was enough to push him toward the door. If he stayed any longer, he might say something he shouldn't.

The clock chimed loudly and it was enough to jolt him from his thoughts. "I'm sorry, I um... I should really get going. I promised I'd meet someone."

A few more steps toward the door, "it was nice seeing you." Before she had much chance to reply, he took his leave, using all of his willpower to keep from running the moment he set foot outside.

The shinigami didn't try to stop Fai, she simply watched him go. Once gone, she turned back to stare at the tiger behind the counter.

For the first time, if they ever got out of here, a part of her hoped they wouldn't remember everything that had happened while held captive. Then she wouldn't have to wonder which Hitsugaya she was talking to; it would just be Shiro-chan.

S.T. had been headed for the fields on the outskirts of town when a snippet of music escaped through an open store door. Was that live? Or had he overlooked a record store on his first pass through town? Either way, it beat sitting out in the cold and listening to hungry pigeons. He

After numerous assurances that he wouldn't touch the merchandise, he wouldn't even look at it, and that if he got grease anywhere, he'd spend the rest of the day polishing every piece of antique silver in the joint with whatever toxic soup the proprietor could unearth, he was allowed in with his lunch.

He'd half expected it to be Mullet Boy rocking out, but it was a man he didn't know. S.T. waited for a drop-out in the human surveillance network, and moved a wrought-iron hatstand. It was loaded with enough gauze veils, sequins, and artificial flowers to deck out an army of drag queens. Over-wrought, indeed. Then he sat down Indian-style in the space left behind and pulled out his lunch.

The guy was good. Not quite Eddie Van Halen good, but definitely MTV-caliber.

Patient or civilian, paying attention or no, Klavier had offered a smile to anyone who entered the store without deferring from his playing. So when he found someone had actually come to sit and eat nearby, it was no surprise he flashed a smile the man's way as well. Possibly a bit brighter than any yet offered that day. He was happy someone seemed appreciative.

"Haha. You're going to end up making me hungry." It was said jokingly. No way was any amount of hunger going to pull him from this spot. He never stopped playing, even as he spoke. "Do you have a preference or are you here to simply listen?"

The food wasn't quite McDonald's -- while the shake had the one-note flavor of synthesized vanillin, both it and the burger tasted like a cow had been involved in their production. It all -- shake, burger, fries -- had the predigested smoothness of ingredients that had been ground up, freeze-dried, and then reconstituted with chemical assistance. Familiar and comforting. Sangamon could name a dozen health risks tied up in that greasy paper bag, but that was part of the charm. A guilty pleasure.

Unlike the music, which was still just good, no strings attached. He leaned back and closed his eyes, listening. When a conversational voice intruded, he cracked them open again. The words registered, and he dumped most of the fries onto the paper bag and shoved it forward. He wasn't that hungry anyways. "Go ahead," he said.

Preference? An acoustic guitar was never going to manage the decibels for a perfect bubble of suspended disbelief. But he couldn't help wanting something familiar. Or wondering which bands transcended universes. He glanced out a window at the snowglobe-perfect village. "You know Paradise City?"

Oh, how gracious. He certainly hadn't been expecting any kind of offer, let alone most of the man's fries. Even if he wouldn't have normally touched this kind of food, he was immensely thankful. Klavier let one final strum ring out as he reached over and plucked the bag up, placing it closer to him. "Danke. Much appreciated."

He reached in and quickly ate a few (using the sides of his fingers so as to not tarnish his fingertips or these strings with grease). The taste didn't really surprise him, but the request definitely did. More because he wasn't expecting something so familiar. A Guns N' Roses fan? Here? Hahahaha, who would have guessed?

"Heh. Of course," he replied with a full grin. Obviously, he was pleased by the request. It wouldn't be the same on an acoustic, but it was most certainly manageable. He adjusted his fingers on the fret, tested it really quick, and then started plucking the familiar opening riff for the song.

The interesting thing about communal living was that if one roommate offered another food, the offer was generally accepted and added to a certain camaraderie. If the offer was absent, however, one had to expect a guerrilla campaign. Stealth removal, digging a hole to China with a broken spoon. Or to the bottom of the carton of Rocky Road. Cake slices measurable only by micrometer. A

It had made S.T. a fairly generous man with his food. Even more so when he wasn't sure he wanted it in the first place, except as an examination of the Doyleton supply chain.

And you couldn't turn on a radio in 1988 without hearing G 'n' R. Even if S.T. hadn't liked anything with loud guitars and some melodic ability, he couldn't have escaped the media saturation.

Even on acoustic, the riff was unmistakable. S.T. closed his eyes, set his half-eaten burger down, and just listened. Without singing along, though a careful observer might have seen his lips twitch at the chorus.
