Nightshift 31: Disciplinary Therapy Room 4 [M-U for Gray Fox]
For someone who had died so many times already, this could prove to be an interesting night. The doctor had already read through Frank Jaegar's file a few times, noting the most interesting points, including the experiments some so-called Dr. Clark had performed on him.

He glanced down at the prone body, looking it over before letting out a sigh. He knew that it had been necessary to strip the man of his cyber suit before admitting him to Landel's, but it was still a shame to see all of that effort go to waste.

Which was why he didn't see any problem with giving him something similar, if not quite as extreme. It would be familiar for the man, right? "Fox" should have been thanking him for this. He would be a little more extraordinary now -- for a price.

He tapped his hand against the metal table that the patient was strapped to a few times, waiting for him to wake up to that harsh light being suspended over him. Then they could get started.

Being sedated was an unfortunately all to familiar experience, and losing consciousness in such a situation had never lead to waking up someplace pleasant.

He really wasn't surprised to wake up strapped down to a table, that, too, was an unfortunate but familiar experience.

He kept his eyes closed for a few moments once he awoke, listening to what was happening. Hearing nothing but the sound of someone tapping on the cold metal table he was on, Fox opened his eyes to check out his surroundings and the people in the room.

That hadn't taken too long, and the doctor let out an almost pleased sigh when his patient started stirring. He looked him over another time before standing, drawing away for the moment so that he could chat for a bit.

While it wasn't necessary to say anything, to even explain, it always made the experience more interesting for both doctor and patient, so why not? He imagined it was something Dr. Landel would have approved of. It was about physical and psychological torture, after all.

"You've been here before, haven't you, Frank? You don't mind if I call you that, do you?" The man was halfway across the room by now, but his voice came across clearly in the small, quiet room.

"Here? No, but I know the drill," Now that was an unfortunate choice of words, and Fox sincerely hoped there wouldn't be a drill of any sort involved.

"Huh, the doctor I saw during the day said my name was Jack. So, why the double-standard, or was that just a paperwork mix-up." Any information he could get about the operation here would be useful, so he needed to do that before he became incoherent with pain or otherwise unable to speak intelligibly and think.

The doctor smiled, reaching up to brush his hair back. The movements were slight, but they might just be audible considering the sound-proofed silence of the room.

"You know there are no charades at night here, don't you, Frank?" The man hadn't spoken one way or the other about the name, so he didn't see why he couldn't keep using it. "I'm not a very good actor, I'm afraid, so we'll stick to the cold hard facts here."

"Good, I prefer the cold hard facts," Fox said. He could hear the doctor moving in the unnatural quiet of the room. Screaming for help would probably be useless, any facility that planned for this sort of thing would have sound-proofed rooms.

There was a terrible fear starting to take hold, fear or what would be coming. Fox did his best to ignore that until the fear had a more concrete basis.

"Then I'll be blunt," the doctor responded, his tone light and obviously inappropriate for the situation. While the patient was most likely getting more and more unnerved the longer he stayed strapped down to that table, the doctor was just as excited at the prospect of what he would get to try out on this particular piece of meat.

"I was just thinking to myself that it was such a shame that we had to rid you of that cybernetic suit when you were first brought here," he said, his voice ripe with implication.

The Exoskeleton? Fox had absolutely hated it, but there had been times here where he had briefly wished to have that sort of strength back. If he had been wearing the suit, he would've been able to save Snake...

"Wouldn't that be a bit too obvious for this place?" Fox asked. He doubted that the doctor would give him anything as useful as the full Exoskeleton, and had been so drugged and injured when Dr. Clark had first gotten him that he didn't remember much before he was in the full suit.

"Don't worry, you aren't going to be running around looking like some cyber-ninja again," he assured him, his tone dry. The shape the suit had taken had come off as a little ridiculous, and the idea of the patient going around to the different daytime shifts looking like that was particularly laughable.

"It will be discreet, but enough to give you some nostalgia, I hope," he explained, drawing back to the table as he cracked his knuckles in preparation.

Confirmation that he wasn't going to be running around in a full Exoskeleton was comforting, but not enough to really make any difference in the feeling of dread Fox felt building as the doctor returned to his table.

It took a lot of will not to struggle uselessly against the restraints, and he knew that begging would be useless as well. "Just so long as we're clear on the fact that I'm going to do to you what I did to the last person to experiment on me," Fox said, all emotion gone from his voice.

Surprisingly enough, threats weren't all that common in this situation. Most patients had the brains to realize that they had little to no chance of tracking down their doctor (or torturer, as the case may be) again. To hear such a ridiculous notion was enough to make the man laugh, though he did his best to contain himself.

"Understood. I'll definitely let that keep me up at night," he responded, smiling around his words. With that, he pulled a syringe out of his pocket, using the centered light to glance at the liquid it held. "Be glad I'm decent enough to give you a sedative. It won't knock you out, but it'll make sure you don't feel as much of the pain, along with hardly being able to move." Without further delay, he uncapped the syringe and pressed the needle into the patient's arm.

Fox had expected his threat to be taken just a little bit more seriously, considering his track record when it came to killing people. Though he could see how it was difficult to take him seriously when he was restrained.

The needle sticking into his arm made the muscles tense up, Fox hated being drugged, but in this instance it was hard to decide if he would have preferred to be unconscious for this.

Well, at least being awake he would know exactly what the doctor had done to him. Pain was familiar. Pain, Fox could deal with. Being experimented upon? That was another thing entirely, and Fox found himself morbidly amused at the thought that crossed his mind.

Yes, plain old torture would have been preferable to what was going to be done to him.

Once the drug had been administered, the doctor seemed patient enough to sit back and wait until it kicked in. It was easy enough to tell how the man's body became more slack, losing some of its tension. As he waited the few minutes it took, he had the audacity to whistle to himself, and even glance at his watch a few times.

"Well then," he eventually spoke up, "I think it's about time now." He drew forward, actually releasing Fox now that he knew there was no way he could actually sit up and get away (or attack him, as he seemed so keen to do). He gingerly set his hands under the man's body and then carefully flipped him over, all in a very professional, clinical manner.

Once Fox was laying flat on his stomach, he arranged his arms and legs in the proper places and then pushed the button that would put the restraints on yet again.

Slowly, Fox began to lose control over his own body, the muscles relaxing and refusing to move as much as he wanted to once the restraints were momentarily released.

He glared at the doctor as he was touched and flipped over to lie on his stomach, trying to move his currently useless limbs.

The complete inability to move while he had the chance, to kill the doctor, was maddening. He didn't need to move to much. Fox wouldn't even need both his hands to do it. Just one arm, just for a little bit.

His arm simply wouldn't move, not even a little bit, and then the opportunity was lost as he was once again restrained.

"See, wasn't that easy?" the doctor asked patronizingly as he moved away and rolled over a cart with all of the necessary equipment for this particular operation.

First of all, he needed to expose the spine, so the first tool he grabbed was the scalpel - one of his personal favorites. As small as it was, it could still be used to cut open flesh with hardly any effort, though that was because humans were much more fragile than they tried to present themselves.

He returned to the side of the table, drawing his arm forward. He held it steady and started right below Fox's neck, flicking his wrist just slightly to slide the blade into the skin and then drag it down, opening him up.

Fox hadn't been exactly sure what to expect, unable to see what the doctor was doing while he was strapped down on his stomach.

The scalpel cutting into the skin right below his neck and then continuing down made Fox scream in pain before he cut off the sound, determined to give the doctor as little satisfaction as he was cut open.

It didn't take a genius to figure out the doctor was going after his spine. With that knowledge, it was really for the best that none of his muscles could move. As much as Fox hated being helpless, the last thing he wanted was to twitch at the wrong moment and end up with nerve damage.

The thought of having a cybernetic implant on his spine was enough to have Fox in a cold, nervous sweat though. "Why do you..." Fox had to stop and collect himself for a moment before finishing his question. "Do this to us? Just torturing us would be easier, wouldn't it?"

"Believe me," he said as he finished the cut, speaking over the screaming as though it didn't faze him (and it didn't), "it would be a lot worse if I hadn't drugged you." He had tried it a few times, but usually the pain jump-started the patient into moving even while sedated, so he had decided that this was the better choice. It was hard to make precise cuts when the subject wouldn't be still.

He set the scalpel down and grabbed another device, which would be used to attach the implants to his spine. They wouldn't be visible beyond the fact that there would be a definite protrusion down his spine, but he was sure the daytime nurses could overlook that without too much of a problem.

Of course, it would be another matter when it was dark, but the patient would figure that out soon enough.

"Torture is all fine and good, but why waste you when we can try all sorts of things out on you? No point in letting good meat spoil," he explained.

Having been waging wars for as many years as Fox had, he knew it took a special type of person to carry out interrogations. A lot of soldiers were unable to carry out that kind of act while staying even remotely sane. Fox found it debatable if any interrogation experts could even be called that.

Killing people for a job was one thing, Fox had never liked that it was necessary, but he had come to terms with the fact that he was a killer, that sometimes the enemy just had to die. But torture was something Fox had never supported, even before he'd been on the receiving end.

But to view other people as nothing more than a chunk of meat was particularly low. It spoke volumes about this facility and the people that ran it.

"Where does Landel get people like you? Does he advertise for this publicly, or do they turn you into monsters after they hire you." Fox growled, trying to ignore the pain and the horribly exposed feeling of having his back cut open like that.

"Interesting question, but you couldn't have imagined I would give you all the answers," the doctor responded with a sigh. As for getting these implants -- well, implanted -- he was going to need a clear shot to the patient's spine.

Using gloved fingers, he carefully pulled at the lacerated skin to open him up a little more, nodding to himself when the spinal cord was properly exposed.

With that, he grabbed the device and placed it against the backbone. He wasn't sure what world the technology came from, but it was a lot simpler than some five hour surgery. It was more or less a glorified stapler, which would attach an implant to one of the vertebrae when pressure was applied.

He pressed down.

Any sort of retort died on his lips as Fox clenched his jaw, managing to partially stifle another scream of pain.

He really hoped that this room was extremely sterile, though he had the feeling that an infection would be the least of his worries coming out of this surgery.

"Well, I had hoped to come out of this with more than just a-" Fox was cut off by a scream of pain. It was a blinding agony along his spine and he was completely unable to think about anything beyond the pain.

Even dying hadn't been that painful, and Fox wondered if the doctor had just made a mistake and he would be permanently paralyzed as a result.

With medical procedures like this, they really didn't need torture.

The scream was fulfilling, the doctor experiencing the feeling that came from seeing the results of hours of long work, though it was compressed into one lengthened sound that reverberated against the walls of the small room.

Unfortunately for Frank Jaegar, there was one more to go. Picking up the device and moving it a little further down his spine, the doctor rinsed and repeated.

After this he would just need to sew him back up and make sure that everything was in place.

The pain from the first implant still hadn't faded when the second one was applied, making Fox scream again.

With all Fox had gone through, nothing had ever been so painful. When he got his hands on this Doctor he was going to make sure he repaid him for this agony, and ensured that he never had the chance to torment another 'patient' again.

"Shhh," the doctor insisted as he drew back, setting down the device that was now sprinkled with some of the patient's blood. "It'll be all over soon, and really, you should be glad that it didn't last any longer." Granted, most people would have knocked a person out when that sort of pain was going to be applied, but the doctors at Landel's were hardly conventional.

Now, to get him sewed up and into working order again (though he imagined this would be putting him out of the population of people who could get around without a wheelchair for a few days). Moving back to the cart, he grabbed the tools he needed for stitches and then didn't hesitate to return to Fox and start suturing.

It took a while for Fox to realize that he was being sewn up, only vaguely aware of the sutures being put in his skin. Next to the lingering pain in his back, it was minor and barely felt like more than a touch.

The words the doctor said barely held any meaning, but after a few moments Fox realized he had said that this was over.

That had been particularly short, next to his experience with other medical procedures and torture sessions. Short but to the point.

It took some time, of course, since stitching up a human body was not a simple process, but the doctor was good at what he did and so it was all very neat by the time he was blood. Sure, there was a lot of blood, but a simple wipe with some sanitary cloths took care of that.

While this should have been about the time that he made his ominous departure, there was one thing the doctor wanted to make sure of. Smiling to himself, he reached up to turn off the light that was suspended over the operating table, shrouding the room in darkness.

Except that it wasn't as dark as it wanted to be, with small tendrils of white-blue light glowing from the patient's upper back and near his shoulders.

For some reason, the sudden lack of light was an almost welcome relief, and it took a moment for Fox to notice the faint blue light in the room. He wasn't quite sure where it was coming from.

Was that light coming from the thing the doctor had put into his back? The light wasn't coming down from overhead, and he hadn't seen anything else in the room he expected to give off light.

As far as the doctor was concerned, this was a job well done. Then again, he didn't end up with too many failed experiments these days, though his definition of failure was probably a bit more elastic than most.

"Good night, Frank," he said, the smile audible in his tone. He wondered how the man would fair sneaking around like that. With that, he made his slow walk toward the door, though before he even reached it, there was no further trace of the man.
