Nightshift 31: East Wing, North Hall 2-B
[from here]

Once through the door Siegfried paused again to consult the map. There was a blank space where the rooms had not been recorded, but Siegfried was sure that those were the rooms he had found the previous night, and if he was reading the map correctly it seemed that they led around in a circle and returned back to this hallway. He might as well explore them all then; it would save him repeating the trip another night.

That the door he slipped through should have been locked didn't deter Mozenrath. If anything, he saw it as a convenient shortcut-- someone else had broken through the lock so he didn't have to. And where better to keep items of power like a magic gauntlet then under lock and key? This was certainly a step in the right direction.

Of course, even with the other scattered figures in the hall, he found the light quality weak. Scar needed to hurry up with that light stick so he could have a proper look around. He folded his arms and looked back at the lion with an impatient expression.

For the first time tonight, Scar was showing the first signs of annoyance. It wasn't like he could do anything about being in this inconvenient form. His throat nearly released a small growl, but he realized now was not quite the time to begin baring his fangs.

Not that he currently had any fangs to begin with.

As he caught up with Mozenrath, he swept the beam of his light stick over the hall. He didn't necessarily need the extra light to spot the other patients in the hall, but he concluded the area to be safe for now.

He briefly glanced at sorcerer. Scar wasn't going to break any doors himself, so he could do the work. It would prove how useful the other man actually was, anyway.

It was about time Scar caught up. Of course, Mozenrath didn't see anywhere he wanted to look at this end of the hall. They'd have to keep moving and that meant waiting on Scar some more. He gave him a half lidded glance. Scar hadn't looked excessively old, but he held himself as one with extreme arthritis might. Perhaps it wasn't only his proclaimed life of privilege that made Scar so slow. Mozenrath smirked evilly.

"Am I going too fast for you, old man?"

Old man? It had nothing to do with that. Even despite the fact he had a stick.

"I can't help it these human forms are so troublesome." Scar grumbled. There was no sense in being secretive about something so obvious. "But by all means, feel free to go on ahead."

He paused for a second.

"Of course, if you don't mind being caught off guard by some monster hiding the darkness."

Human forms are troublesome? Now that was an interesting confession to make. Mozenrath stroked his chin a moment. Whatever was Scar when he wasn't human? The possibility of Genie or diety crossed the sorcerer's mind, but he would allow Scar to explain himself.

"And what is your natural form?" He continued to smirk. "Must be quite foreign to humanity for you to find this to be troublesome." Even Genies and dieties were anthropomorphic, Mozenrath reminded himself.

"Alas, I was caught off guard on my first night here and I won't be making that mistake again. Of course," he began to mirror the tone Scar used moments earlier, "if a certain older gentleman can't keep the pace, other arrangements will have to be worked out."

"Have you concluded that all by yourself?" Scar remarked on a bored tone. The other man seemed to like stating the obvious, apparently. "My natural form is indeed different from this one. I'd say it is rather obvious if I compare my own gestures to those more used to this type of body, but perhaps I was expecting too much of you."

"I fully realize it is not your fault, however. Not everyone is gifted with functioning braincells." The lion-changed-human continued. "In any case, are you familiar with lions?"

Arrangements, hmmm? He wondered what Mozenrath could come up with. "I am curious, what will these 'other arrangements' be?" he asked, making sure Mozenrath couldn't reach his flashlight.

Mozenrath was familiar with lions, albeit not intimately. He had read a good share about them and seen a lone one or two along the way. And of course, the idea of a talking animal wasn't as weird as it should have been-- afterall, Mozenrath's closest confidant was a floating eel. Still, it was a strange confession for one to make and Mozenrath was somewhat dubious. He couldn't discredit the claim; his captors had also stolen his gauntlet and appeared to have their own magic. It wasn't impossible for them to grant an animal human form, was it?

"I thought lions were more..." What was the term? "...regal in the way they held themselves." So, the "royalty" Scar spoke of was royalty as it applied to the animal kingdom if he really was a lion. Mozenrath smirked. That meant that Scar wasn't anywhere near the same status as he was in terms of political power. That made him feel momentarily fantastic.

Scar's insults, however, were quick to sink in. He clenched his fists. "Oh, and I suppose you know EVERYTHING there is to know about everyone? Your intelligence hasn't struck me as anything more impressive than animal instinct."

Scar moved the flashlight and Mozenrath glowered internally. He had been hoping to snatch it away in a quick move, but he was going to have to rethink that plan.

"Well, I am no longer in a lion form, now am I?" Scar pointed out dryly. It was only logical that he held himself differently than he normally would. After all, he suddenly lacked a tail, and had to walk on two legs instead of four.

"If my intelligence, as you claim, isn't anything more than animal instinct." Scar answered with a smirk. "I wonder what that would say about your own intelligence. Or are you just bitter to be insulted by a lion?" As far as Scar had noticed, these humans thought highly of their own race. Why wouldn't Mozenrath be an exception?

"In any case, shall we continue?"

"My intelligence far surpasses anything you might know!" snapped the sorcerer, overlooking the fact that this was the reaction Scar had intended to get. He continued to rant about how he had worked up to where he had been in life before waking up at Landels (against his will, he stressed often) and how he had been quite versed in books and studies and of course, one couldn't forget how insanely POWERFUL he was...

He snorted and turned away from Scar. "And the only reason we are still standing around and talking about continuing is because you are so very SLOW." He threw his hands up. "I have been ready for a long time..." He trailed off, heading deeper down the hall. He stopped before the last door. It wasn't as if he had any other options; he was going to run into the wall if he kept walking. Casually, he grabbed the knob and found the door to be locked.

Huh. Well, Scar would have to fix this. Mozenrath turned to the lion as if he expected him to make everything right. "Open the door," he said cooly.

It was amusing, how Mozenrath acted like a small child who didn't get his favorite toy. It was far too easy to push the man's buttons.

After he had caught up, Scar glanced at the door. He could open it with the steel pipe he was carrying, he had discovered last night. But there was a matter of principle. Mozenrath could do all the work, he decided.

"If you are as intelligent as you say you are, then surely, this door shouldn't pose a problem?"

Mozenrath glared and opened his arms wide. "Does it look as if I am carrying anything designed to break open a door? I have no keys, no gauntlet, and no patience for this. You're the one with the items. YOU open it." He pointed a gloved finger at the pipe the former lion carried. "That should do the job nicely, I would think. Get to it."

"Oh, and here I thought you were so intelligent and powerful." Scar remarked, feigning disappointment. "Such a pity you apparently don't have anything to back up your claims with."

"Look," Mozenrath put his hands on his hips. "Where's the logic in assuming I could break a door down without the aid of tools?" The sorcerer wasn't blind to the fact he wasn't built for such work. He was on death's door as it was, the sands in the hourglass almost gone. The separation from his gauntlet was only a momentarily extension on time.

He held up his right hand, showing Scar his glove. "If I had my gaunlet, I could very easily break this door or even open a rift in space and climb around this blasted obstacle." He closed it into an angry fist. "But since our captors have taken it upon themselves to steal MY gauntlet..."

There was murder in the sorcerer's eyes.

"I don't know." Scar replied dryly. "Perhaps it had something to do with you boasting about how amazing you were."

Scar took another glance at the door. At this rate, the door would be broken down long after he was dead and decayed. Mozenrath was even less dependent than a hyena. And that said a lot.

The King let out a sigh, as he massaged his temple with his hand. Must he do everything?! "I wonder what you would have done if you hadn't ran into me." he muttered. "Perhaps you should whine less about that precious gauntlet of yours, and try to find other useful items." If Scar had known more about humans, he would have been amused that Mozenrath had to rely on a lion to open doors.

It took a few good swings with the steel pipe, but finally the troublesome obstacle opened. The King had half the mind to slam the door shut behind him, just so a certain other person would walk into it, but eventually decided not to lower himself to his level.

[Coming from here.]

This door looked as if it had already been broken open, and that made Daemon pause to swipe his flashlight up the hall, checking for any of the supposed monsters that were supposed to be in this hall, searching for Jill, he assumed.

There had been nothing of use in the last room, but he hoped the doors in this hall would give them something more useful.

He paused to inspect the first door in this hallway, a cool smile slipping across his lips as he noticed this lock was worn and dented.

"We should be able to get into this one," he spoke to his father and brother.

"Let's give it a try," Lucivar said, taking a step back before lifting his foot and kicking the door. There was some give to the door before the lock buckled, the door swinging open.

"Well, that was satisfying," Lucivar grinned. "Hopefully it's not another dead end."

[hopefully in the right area, coming from here]

And this was the end of the Qui-gon's map: beyond this, was anyone's guess. The door wasn't locked, which was odd at this point, given the state of the map. Someone else must've passed through here.

Someone else had been this way, apparently. Well, it saved Qui-Gon the trouble of opening the lock up himself. It was only a small use of his abilities, but as things were now, it would be wise to conserve his energy. Opening the crude, rusted locks here wasn't a large drain, but over time and doing it over and over during the night, it could build up.

Qui-Gon stepped inside...

Scar let Mozenrath go as soon as they had entered the hallway, not too keen on dragging him around longer than absolutely necessary. His green eyes quickly scanned the area, but unlike the previous room there did not appear to be any threats that could be alerted by a certain man's big mouth.

"I do hope you are satisfied?" he commented to said man with big mouth.
