Nightshift 31: Cafeteria
[from here]

It seemed that brat didn't follow him anymore. Good riddance. He could do without the stupid maggot's whining, really.

Albel's crimson eyes glanced around as he entered the cafeteria, on his guard in case some worm happened to be hiding around here. The small beam of his flashlight didn't really make much of a difference, though, he couldn't see much further into the room. Useless piece of crap.

When nothing had launched itself at his throat yet, Albel saw no reason to keep standing around. He silently moved further into the room, passed the chairs and tables towards the kitchen.

Renji didn't pause in the room. Nothing jumped at them immediately, and that was good enough for him. He didn't slow down as he headed for the kitchen.

She entered the cafeteria, so different during the night to the croded space it became during the daylight hours, but didn't really pause to dwell on it. She ran quickly through the room and towards the door which was mercifully open.

The cafeteria was so.... empty. It looked so much larger at night than it ever did during the daytime. He looked back and smiled.

"Are you still with me Miss Sohma? It's not much farther. The doors on the sides lead to the outside."

"Mmhmm," she squeaked as they left the large, open room for another. This one was just as familiar, but somehow in the dark it was a lot scarier. Kyo should be proud of her, she though to herself, for being so brave even when she was scared!

Kagura scanned the area quickly with her flashlight, a little relieved when nothing jumped out at her. Maybe they'd be ok for tonight! She hoped so at least. She followed Bridget over to the side door, looking over her shoulder every so often, just in case.

Bridget smiled encouragingly before reaching out and testing the door. Locked. How did he know it would be locked? "Miss Sohma," he began, turning and holding out his bear with a smile. "Would you please hold Roger for me? The door is locked, but I think with a bit of effort, I can get it open."

The bear was much heavier than he looked, and the fur didn't feel anything like most toy bears. It was soft, but felt almost too realistic.

Kagura could feel her heart sink when the door appeared to be locked. It hadn't stopped Leon and the others from breaking into Hatori's office a few nights back, but neither she nor Bridget could be strong enough to do something like that! Well... perhaps she could... but... it would be terribly unladylike!

She was surprised then, when Bridget calmly held out Roger to her. Kagura took the bear carefully, slipping only for a moment when she realized how heavy he was(because of that AI thing?). She hugged the bear to her chest with one arm, flashlight in the other as she noticed just how real Roger did feel. Like it might spring to life at any moment. "Okay," she consented quietly, waiting as Bridget worked on the door. It did make her feel helpful, if only a little bit.

"Thank you," she added, "for letting me come along." She offered him a shy smile in gratitude.

The weak beam of light revealed no monsters to Naminé, so far at least. Good, then that meant they were safe... fortunately for Naminé, unfortunately for Alita.

"The Courtyard is through either one of these doors," She explained, gesturing to her sides. "The path will take you around to the other door, so it's hard to get lost."

Naminé waited for an answer, or to see Alita move, but she was met with silence. When the blonde turned around, she was greeted with more silence and an empty space where Alita should have been.

"... Alita?"

Someone else stepped through the door, but Naminé could already tell by the shadows that it wasn't Alita. Where did she go? The witch moved back into the Sun Room, hoping for the best.

He shone Citan's light through the room, trying to see if the moving shape he could see was a monster. He didn't think so, but he kept very close to the door until his friends arrived, just in case.

After the...thing had moved on, Citan caught up easily enough to the rest of his group.

"Hopefully we'll encounter no further little delays," he muttered, peering beyond Armand into the dining hall.

TK scanned the area, still checking back into the Sun Room, not quite trusting the creepy little kid to not follow them or some other victim. "Delays can be expected. Hopefully injuries can be mostly avoided." If one ever wanted an optimistic appraisal of a situation, TK would be the last person you'd turn to.

"I'm simply grateful we got through there unscathed," Armand said with full sincerity. If he remembered right the door to the kitchen was behind that long counter. He shone the light that way and worked his way toward that area.

[[From the Courtyard.]]

Signum followed Reno into the cafeteria, again surveying the area she was to cross and again spotting only a single light, this time near the door to the sun room. Things had been awfully quiet tonight... she wasn't quite ready to say it was too quiet, but she'd never gone so far without encountering signs of battle before. Speaking of which...

"You said you won't run, but how much experience do you have?" she asked. If he'd been here two weeks and wandered around during nightshift out of boredom she was sure he'd survived a few fights, but she didn't know against what. There was a big difference between killing some animal in a group and taking on one of the real monstrosities people talked about with just the two of them.

Reno glanced at her and gave his pipe a lazy twirl before shrugging. "Define 'experience.' Like, how much experience I have hitting people in general, or how much experience I have with the monster freaks here? 'Cause I did run into that creepy fucker wearing a pyramid and some naked demon woman, but I can't say I took 'em out or anything. The night sort of ended and saved our asses that way."

He paused. "I do know how to hit things pretty well, though. If that makes you feel better."

"That's what I wanted to know," Signum confirmed. His answer wasn't very specific, but there was only so much she could know without seeing him fight anyway. That he'd stuck through and survived a fight with one of the recognized heavy hitters of the Institute and still spoke confidently about his skills was probably as good as she was going to get. She did wonder, though, where he'd managed to pick up that kind of skillset and still have his attitude.

"What did you do? Before you came here." Might as well ask. It was probably better that she socialize a little... Hayate had always insisted they be on good terms with those around them.

What did he do? It'd been awhile since anyone had specifically asked him that and he tended to dodge the question. "I blackmail and assassinate people and sometimes watch the President's ass" didn't really seem the best answer to give out of context.

"I worked for the President," Reno said finally. "Hell of a lot more paperwork than action, though, most of the time. What about you?"

They reached the cafeteria without too much difficulty. The Sun Room was supposed to be the hardest place to get through, at least from the stories he'd heard. He let himself breathe a quiet sigh of relief as the others followed him through the doors. There were just a couple more rooms until they reached that passageway. "It shouldn't be too much further," he told them. "There should be a room in the kitchen that's like a large icebox, or... cold storage. There's supposed to be a passage through one of the floor tiles."

Rinali nodded, glancing back the way they had come, where the little boy was. She was still disturbed by him, a little boy who could cause so much hurt. Did he even know what he was doing? Or was he a trick, like the Akuma? She decided not to think on it any longer.

"A cold storage room," Rinali repeated. "Got it. I'll keep my eyes open!"

"Don't let your guards down. Every room we have to pass through is a room that could contain an enemy." Leon tried to keep his disapproval hidden, but it was carelessness that had gotten his group into trouble his first night out, and ultimately cost him most of his right hand.

Allen gave Leon a nod before he continued, the beam of his portable torch flicking about the room, looking for any signs of movement or trouble. Nothing terribly out of ordinary. He lead them onward, to the next room.

Once inside, she leaned her back against the door, fear and anger and a plethora of other feelings all catching up with her. Kagura slipped to the ground and tried not to sob. Bridget, was he alright? She hadn't even been able to see him, let alone check his injuries as they ran.

Her hands shook as she focused the beam of her flashlight. "B-bridget-san... " It was hard to miss the blood that ran down his back or the many small bites where the insects had taken pieces of his flesh. Her breath caught in her throat for a moment in panic. They had to get help! This was serious! "Bridget-san, h-hang in there!" But what could she do?! They were nowhere near anything she could use to treat him and... and she couldn't really carry him anywhere either! But there was so much blood!

Bridget checked the door to make certain it had closed and nothing had gotten through even as he slid down to his knees. His breathing was ragged and shallow, but he turned to smile up at Kagura. "I'm alright Miss Sohma," he said breathlessly. "Are...Are you okay?" He'd tried to sheild her from the insects as best he could, but he didn't know if anything had gotten past him and to her.

Seeing her concern, he gathered Roger to his chest, mindful of the blood and tried to get to his feet.

Silly fool! How could he smile at a time like this? She hardly knew him and he had gotten himself hurt like that just to help her! Kagura couldn't keep the tears back and try as she might, she just couldn't return his hopeful smile. "I can't do this," she sobbed into her hands. It was too scary, too hopeless, too much!

"I'm not... I'm not strong enough!" Kagura sniffled, rubbing at one eye with the heel of her palm. It wasn't something she ever thought she'd say. Most of the time she regretted her brutish strength, but this was something else entirely. That sort of strength couldn't help her here. Here she was rejected and ignored by her own family, and utterly helpless when it came to things like this!

Kagura knew she should be concerned about Bridget and his injuries, but it was so hard to even try! What if there were more bugs here? What if there was something even worse?! They were both bleeding and she knew very well how animals could be when they smelled something wounded. It was probably only a matter of time.

Bridget frowned and then moved to crouch down beside Kagura. He held out Roger, knowing now that he wouldn't be allowed to touch her. She had said as much, right? But she could hold Roger and maybe take some comfort in his presence.

"Miss Sohma," he began, his tone gentle. "Please don't cry. We'll get through this. You're strong and brave." He smiled. "More than you know. Together, we'll get through this. Come on. Let's go somewhere safe." He stood again, hoping he didn't look as weak and sick as he felt. His back was burning where the insects had bitten him and he wondered if they were poision.
