Disciplinary Therapy Room 1 [MU for Javert]

Such a delightful specimen, ripe and ready for whatever slight...modifications were on the table this evening... There was a certain joy in taking such steadfast and true bases and tweaking them just enough. Improving. Making them better.

This one, strapped down and restrained as they always were, was older than the usual subject. Visibly older. But he was fit and healthy, enough so for treatment. And if he wasn't...

Well, there were always a handful of failures. No omelets without cracked eggs, after all.

And as soon as the subject woke up, they could begin.

Javert awoke with the distinct feeling that something was incredibly wrong. First, he couldn't recall falling asleep in the first place; second, the lights in his room were never this bright, especially if Nightshift had begun without his knowledge. He made as if to get up, then stopped, more because he couldn't move than because he'd guessed where he was - although that sober realization came moments afterward.

A brief, firm tug at the restraints confirmed his suspicions: it was unlikely they would give. Pity. Javert forced himself to relax against the table; there didn't seem to be anything else he could do at the moment. Truth be told, while he had heard plenty about these so-called experiments, he had never quite expected to be selected as one of the subjects.

"Out of all the more interesting patients, I take it?" he drawled, his tone of voice belying the unease he was already beginning to feel.

"All subjects have merit."

The doctor was pulling on a pair of white latex gloves. He gave the subject a brief glance, face unreadable beneath a surgical mask and goggles. Other than that, the doctor seemed more interested in preperations than the man on the table.

"Some more. Some...less."

The doctor's cryptic statements only served to irritate Javert. Not only did he have no idea what to expect, he also had no idea why he was even here. His mind raced; he had no powers which the man might want to examine, nothing at all interesting in his past (and if there were something, he thought darkly, thinking back to his therapy session that morning, reading Hugo's book would be far more informative than attempting to interrogate him).

He decided to take the bait. "I fail to see what merit I have that could possibly interest you. Care to enlighten me?"

The doctor turned to a tray beside the table. An array of surgical tools were lined up, cold steel glinting in the harsh lights of the treatment room. He lifted one, a sharp scalpel, and held it to the light as though studying it.

"There is always room for improvement. Clay is useless until shaped and given attribute. The base exists to be made functional."

The feeling of unease doubled at the sight of the scalpel, as did his instinctive mistrust of doctors. Javert tried to remember if Faust had told him anything useful about modern medicine - anything at all that might help - and could come up with nothing.

"I despise riddles. Speak plainly." What the hell did the doctor mean by 'improve,' anyway? He was irreproachable - had been irreproachable - had made it his life's purpose to be so. And even if he'd failed in the end...

A chuckle. The doctor put down the scalpel and picked up a syringe, testing it. The liquid within was clear.

"I speak plainly, Inspector. There are no riddles here. We will improve you."

Inspector. He'd called him Inspector, not Officer - though perhaps that ought not have been as great a surprise as it was. There had never been any doubt in Javert's mind that the doctors of the Institute knew the true identities of their patients perfectly well, and this only served to prove what he'd known all along. It was all a façade.

"I'm not entirely certain my improvement requires your help," he said, eyeing the needle. He'd never seen one of the things before he came here, but he'd learned their purpose quickly enough. It was doubtful, at any rate, that this one would merely make him drowsy.

"Rest assured it does."

The doctor leaned down, hovering over the subject and focusing on a point on the man's neck. There was a quick swabbing of some cold liquid on cotton and then the needle was plunged in.

"And so we begin."

Javert stiffened as he felt the needle go in, more at the completely alien sensation than at any pain he might have felt.

This couldn't be happening to him. It was, as far as he was concerned, impossible. He'd had enough trouble dealing with the sheer culture shock he'd had upon arrival, never mind the fact that he'd failed miserably at killing himself. If he'd known that stepping off the embankment by the Pont-au-Change would only lead to this...

His thoughts were roaming; he collected himself with a visible effort. Hiding his apprehension, he waited silently for whatever it was to take effect.

It had begun. It was merely a paralytic, to ensure there was no flailing about or thrashing and unnecessary injury to the subject during the treatment process. It would kick in soon enough, prohibiting movement but not dulling sensation.

That would simply be no fun.

"And how are you feeling?"

Javert held back something resembling a snarl. He could feel his movements slowing already, and there was no doubt in his mind as to the purpose of the drug. Trying to fight would do no good; attempting to reason with the man would likely have little effect - what was more, he wasn't quite willing to stoop that low yet.

As far as he could tell, he was absolutely powerless.

It wasn't a position in which he was used to finding himself. It didn't help that the doctor currently standing above him was almost certainly not bound by lofty ideas of honor, unlike the idiot revolutionaries who had previously held him captive.

"I've felt better," he deadpanned.

"And when we have finished, you will be better."

There was such thrill in improving them. As he had said, the base was simple. Useless. But when the base was added to, built upon...

It was true magic.

Now to begin. The scalpel came next, picked up deliberately within view of the subject. But then the doctor moved behind the table, out of line of sight.

"I would tell you to relax, this isn't going to hurt... but that would be a lie."

As much as he tried not to, he couldn't help but focus on the scalpel when it was picked up. Once again, he noticed that the doctor had never really specified what he'd meant by 'improving.' And it was interesting how the man kept on repeating that, as if he thought Javert would eventually believe him if he heard it enough.

Perhaps, Javert thought detachedly as he waited, he should have made plans for tonight. He was in the habit of drifting from group to group; it was unlikely that anyone would miss him now.

Perhaps that had been a mistake.

Now the fun began. The scalpel was dragged across Javert's forehead, not deep enough to cut. A small preview of what was to come. The fear made it better. And not simply on a sadistic level. The activity in the mind spiked during times of high emotion, and it made these things so much easier.

At the touch of the scalpel, Javert's jaw clenched involuntarily, but that was all. He wouldn't allow the other man the satisfaction of any other reaction.

His mind, on the other hand, was running through every escape plan he could think of, most of them wildly ludicrous, and all of them obviously impossible. He'd always managed to get away before, whether by good planning or by sheer luck. It seemed neither would help him tonight.

It was difficult to tell what the doctor was doing. There were sensations of the scalpel, lightly dragged back and forth across the subject's forehead. This continued for a short time before it ended with a laugh. Oh, it could be done with cutting the subject open, exposing the gray matter inside...

And as pleasant as it would be, there were more efficient means to achieve the same result. This did not stop the doctor from pressing the pointed tip of the scalpel into the subject's temple, just enough to break the skin.

Javert's eyes narrowed slightly at the doctor's laugh and the subsequent prick of the scalpel. What the hell did he think he was doing?

"Get it over with. Do you honestly believe I'll play your little games?"

"Ah, but you already are." Another chuckle. "And I do so enjoy making the most of these sessions. But I must say, I am pleased you are so eager to receive this gift we have decided to bestow upon you."

Fine. If he wished it to be done, it would be done.

Javert let out a harsh laugh that sounded disappointingly forced to his own ears. "It doesn't seem I have any other choice."

He tried to test the bonds again. No use; his arms and legs refused to respond. Brushing away the tendrils of fear that had begun to rear their ugly heads, he waited.

Humph. Ungrateful pissant. They were all so ungrateful. Didn't they realize the great blessing it was to be chosen? They should be on their knees in thanks....

It was with irritation and indignant frustration that the doctor retrieved another syringe and jammed it more firmly than necessary into the subject's temple.

Javert had expected another cut of the scalpel. What he hadn't expected was the sudden agony that exploded behind his eyes, forcing a strangled cry from behind obstinately clenched teeth.

Half-blinded by pain and all but incapable of thinking clearly, he could only lie there, forbidding himself to make another noise. He half-fancied he could feel the needle in his head.

Oh, such a sweet sound. The doctor was slow in pressing the plunger of the needle, letting the solution inside out slowly. So quick. So efficient. And it would make such a difference.

"I was trying to go slowly," the doctor chided. "But you were so very impatient..."

He barely heard the doctor's words. The realization that something beyond the pain was happening was slowly occurring to Javert. There was something unbearably cold beginning to seep into his mind - something he couldn't identify and wasn't sure he wanted to.

He managed to unclench his teeth just long enough to choke out, "What...?"

"Can you feel it?" The doctor sounded pleased, condescending, superior. He withdrew the syringe slowly, letting his subject feel it all. "A few more moments and you will be new and improved. Isn't it delightful?"

What the hell was happening to him?

Ridiculous as he would have thought the idea a mere few hours ago, he could sense whatever the man had injected worming its way into his mind with agonizing slowness. He tried to clutch his head in his hands before remembering that he couldn't move, that it was no use whatsoever.

Just when he thought the pain had finally begun to lessen, it flared back to life with an unexpected intensity, tearing across his eyes and eliciting something between a scream and a curse from him.

He could only focus on the doctor's words and pray the man meant what he said. A few more moments.

The syringe was gone. It was only a few moments before the pain began to lessen, but a flood of jumbled images and sounds assaulted the subject's brain, unidentifiable or understandable, nothing but blurred colors and shapes, flashing by at lightening speed.

His eyes snapped open, seeing everything and nothing at the same, incapable of focusing on any one image. Here and there, he caught a glimpse of something he might have recognized given time, but it always vanished before he could place it. Overwhelmed with the sheer sensation assailing his mind, he barely noticed when the pain at last gradually faded and died.

And there were still more unidentifiable images and sounds that might have been words once, but no longer. He was drowning again, could feel himself sinking, and he tried desperately to mentally claw himself out, to focus on the ceiling that he knew was somewhere beyond the flashes of color and light and noise.

"What have you done to me?" he bit out, even as the assault, too, began to slow.

"You have been improved." There seemed to be no further explanation forthcoming. The doctor turned away, stripping off gloves and gathering up his tools.

"Your bonds will be released momentarily. But I doubt you will get very far."

Javert was finding looking past the colored spots still dancing in his vision a difficult task. He snarled in frustration; if this persisted, he didn't know how he'd be able to return to the first floor, let alone his room. Once again, he wondered vaguely if anyone might have noticed his absence tonight.

"I doubt it as well, given whatever it was you injected me with at the beginning of tonight's experiment."
