Nightshift 31: Patients' Library
[from here]

It was darker in this room than the last time she'd been in, but that was a given. It was night after all. And she hadn't exactly brought her flashlight with her. Neither had Harley for that matter. The Noah had to wonder how the human was seeing in the darkness without any heightened Noah senses. Maybe she was just used to the dark. Or she could have just been following Rhode's lead. Whatever.

She stepped in and up to the first bookshelf close to her. "How do you wanna look for it?" she asked, curious. Rhode's approach would have been to start toppling bookshelves, but she had a feeling that the two of them wouldn't be able to make them budge. What she wouldn't give to have an Akuma at her beck and call right now! Maybe they could just start throwing books around and see if there was a switch or something. Maybe one of the walls would move or a part of the floor would fall out. "And if we don't find anything, where do you think we should look next? I don't know any other boring places here..." she trailed off. There were probably too many to count, but a Library pretty much took the prize for boring.

As soon as the door was shut behind them and it seemed all was clear, Harley allowed a big grin to spread across her face.

"How? Easy, kiddo!" she said, happily. "We tear this place apart!"

That was the procedure. If you were looking for a safety deposit box or a file or a diamond or anything else one might have hidden around, you had to turn the place upside down! You never know where these suckers hide stuff.

"We gotta check all the shelves! If there are any statues or busts, we gotta mess around with 'em and see if they pull apart! If there are any paintin's on the wall, tear 'em down!" She lifted a well-knowing finger and wagged it in the air. "A lotta people back home hide stuff behind paintin's, actually, so we might wanna check those first."

Oh, boy. It sure was a lot of work to do, especially in the dark. The task was more than manageable, though, especially if they got a whole night to do so. But Harley had to admit, the chances of finding something were kind of slim. After all, it was kind of cliche, wasn't it?

She walked carefully into the room, not wanting to trip over anything that might be on the floor. "If we don't find nothin' in here, we should try the utility closets, I think! Even if there's no door, there might be some fun goodies in there at least!"

She was getting so excited. She wanted to start working right away. This could be fun! Too bad Mr. J wasn't there to share this fun with her. He'd have a blast... and a plan.

t lingered in the shadows, waiting for its next meal. Two nights of travelling in the hallways had left it with only a single toe for a meal. Enough to keep it going, but hardly the feast it had hoped for. So tonight it had wandered its way into the library, a nice, dark place, where its poor vision and poor senses on the solid floors wouldn't matter as much. Fortunately for it, their lack of flashlights meant they couldn't see its ghostly pale carapace, either. For once, it had the advantage.

As their vibrations entered the room, it slowly began to make its way towards them. Its stinger dripped with venom as it approached, and its claws opened and closed in anticipation of a fresh meal. The only sound that gave it away was the barely audible clicking noise that came every time it rested a foot on the cold, hard floors.

Oh, she liked this one! Exactly what she would have done, and even a step further with the statues and paintings mentioned. Rhode still had her own ideas for turning the place upside down, and was more keen to do that than not. All the shelves, she'd said.

"Yes!" she agreed readily, then immediately took off down the shelf most level with her body, running an arm along the length and shoving down every last book along it to the floor. Once at the back of the room, she called up, "You can look at the paintings, I'm doing this first!" The amusement in her voice could not be contained. It had been a while since she'd been able to act outside of what were probably the "rules" for the Library. Putting her hand on a mower shelf this time, she giggled lightly as she ran back, knocking down even more books this time.

She wasn't even allowed to do this back on the Ark!

"Righteroony!" she exclaimed happily, running to the opposite side of the room. Judging by the distinct sounds of books falling to the ground, it seemed Rhode had that side of the room covered.

Unaware of any danger the two might be in, Harley began to scan the walls. It was difficult since it was so dark. She could barely see anything. There wasn't even moonlight to help guide them really... If she didn't have so much experience in the dark, she'd have given up. Still... this was way too dark.

She placed both hands on the wall and began feeling her way across it. If there was anything up there, she should have been able to feel it and rip it down. So far, she was finding nothing. She walked slowly across the wall, feeling it up and down. ...Could it be there was nothing? Man, this was a boring room!

The scorpion stopped as both prey went running off in opposite directions. For a moment it sat, uncertain which way to go, but the ruckus the little girl was causing in the back of the room, knocking off books as she ran.

This time the scorpion was no longer interested in subtlety. If its prey was running, that could only mean it had been discovered. It picked up speed, approaching Rhode as quickly as its legs could carry it, and the clicking sound against the floor increased in volume. At first it was masked by the sound of the falling books, but in a moment of silence as Rhode hit the end of her particular row of books, the sound was unmistakable.

She'd finished with another row and was about to turn for a final run with the last one she could easily reach when a small sound caught her attention. The books were down and it didn't sound like Harley was either smashing statues or fidgeting with paintings on the walls. No, it was more like a clicking... like if someone was turning the light switch on and off really fast. But the lights weren't flashing in response.

Turning her head out of the aisle, she looked down into the darkness to see if she could spot Harley doing anything weird to make such a sound. "Harle...?" she began, then stopped when her eyes saw a white form coming her way. It was big, too big to be anything normal, and with it coming towards her, Rhode took the only course of action that came to mind: turning in the opposite direction and running. Not the smartest option since doing so caught her at a dead end between a wall and a bookshelf, but it had really been the only option. Getting trapped only left one option as well.

"Harley, there's something in here!" she shouted as she knocked a few more books down and began to move up the bookshelf. Hopefully the thing couldn't climb, but if it did, then she'd be in trouble. Some precautionary measures needed to be taken. Taking a moment's pause near the top, she grabbed some of the books she was shoving to the sides and readied to throw them at the white thing. She didn't know what it was, but it was coming at her and had a feeling of blood lust; that was all she really needed to know. Danger may not have been something she was used to, but here in this place it had gotten forced into her senses. She knew when it wasn't safe, and right now, it was not safe.

"Huh?" Harley blurted, turning around to face the side Rhode was working on. She had heard it, too. There had been a fast clicking noise followed by the sounds of the girl scrambling about quickly. She had thought Rhode was doing something to make the noises, but the sudden warning made Harley realize she had been wrong.

She immediately held her arms out as if bracing herself for whatever might be around and scanned the room. "What do ya mean somethin's in here?!" she demanded.

She looked back and forth and saw absolutely nothing. She was getting nervous. This reminded her too much of when she fought the Bat. It'd be pitch black with no sign of anything... then WHAM! There he was right in front of you. No, Harley knew better than to underestimate things hiding in the dark.

She also knew better than to stay planted in one spot. Harley moved sideways, keeping the wall behind her. No way did she want anything jumping up from behind her. Right now, she just wanted to see what the heck was in the room and where it was. After she knew that, then she'd probably be able to take care of it no... prob?

As if correcting her very train of thought, she spotted it: a white mass over there close to the book shelves Rhode had been working on. It was at least kind of easy to spot in the dark, but she couldn't quite make out what it was. She bumped into one of the chairs by the tables in the middle carelessly, completely taken aback in her surprise.

"What the... What the heck is that?" she yelled unnecessarily.

The scorpion stopped at the bottom of the bookshelf, ignoring the books that fell on it. A soft hissing noise emanated from it as it expressed its displeasure that Rhode had so easily escaped, and it remained stationary for a moment, waiting for her to come back down.

Then Harley bumped into one of the chairs. The vibration on the ground was subtle, but enough to draw the giant creature's attention. It slowly turned to face Harley, then with a sudden loud clipping charged towards her. Pincers reached out to grasp at her blindly, though she was still several yards away.

Rhode had been ready to lop a few dozen books or so towards the thing when it stopped pursuing her. She could get a look at it for only a moment before ti turned and headed back the way it had come. What was it? Some kind of bug? But it was way too big! She didn't really want to find out what it was, just so long as it left her alone.

But then there was Harley. Helping a human wasn't her thing, but this human was one she actually liked. "It's going your way!" she called, but kept her position on the bookshelf a moment to think. She had been easy prey if the thing could have managed to climb. Adding the fact that it had hissed at her being up on the shelf, Rhode had a feeling that it wasn't capable of climbing. That would help.

She began knocking some more books down and slid her way along the length of the bookshelf towards the end. If being up high was a safe thing, then all the better!

Whatever the heck that was, it was getting closer! She could hear the clicking getting louder as it did. She looked in time to see the white mass moving toward her.

What the... She still couldn't make out what it was, but she definitely could make out multiple legs. It must have been some kind of giant bug!

"Ohmygod, ohmygod, ohmygod!" Harley yelled out quickly, panicking. What she wouldn't give for a mallet right about then. She didn't even have any kind of weapon on her. She'd have to think of something and quick!

Before she could fully think the action through, she grabbed the back of the chair she had bumped into and lifted it up as best she could. Just as a housewife would with a broom to a mouse, Harley slammed the thing down to the ground in an attempt to smash whatever this thing was; something which would have been far easier during the day than in the pitch black of night.

Had this been a normal bug, it's death would be a guarantee. With how big the thing looked in the dark, she wasn't sure if that would be the case with this one. "Ew, ew, ew, ew, ewwwww!" she said the whole time.

Unfortunately for Harley, the scorpion was well protected from simple bashes like that. The blow did, however, manage to stun it briefly. It stopped moving, momentarily losing its prey in the vibrations from the impact with the chair, but soon found her again. Slowly it opened and closed its pincers, smelling the air to confirm she was where it believed her to be, and then proceeded towards her again.

And the human was throwing a fit. It was just a bug! A really big bug with pincers and a good deal of blood lust. Okay, the human was entitled to some degree of panic. Panic wouldn't get it to leave her alone though.

She peered around the edge of the bookshelf, just barely able to make out the outline of the thing and Harley's attempts to stave it off through the dark. She couldn't hear the slamming of the chair through the shrieks, but Rhode could assume that Harley was managing something since she wasn't shouting like she was getting eaten. Hm, A human getting eaten by a bug... that would be pretty amusing! But did it have to be a human that thought like her? Really, times like this she wished there was some other human around, like maybe that boy she'd attacked in the Game Room a few days back. Or that rabid girl from town! Yeah, she would have been fun to watch get eaten. Just deserts, it would have been.

Those others would have been fine, but Harley she wanted to keep around for a little bit. She'd been having fun with the human until this giant bug had shown itself.

"Stop shouting and just run! Climb a bookshelf or something, it can't climb up!" she called, mostly just to stop the other's shrieks. They were annoying and got worse with the echo through the room. More than that, if the thing wasn't alone, then Harley was making herself really easy prey.

As soon as Harley felt the chair make contact with a dull thwack noise, she had allowed herself a brief sigh of relief. As far as she could tell, there was no immediate movement from the thing afterward. She was about to relax completely when the thing suddenly started moving again.

That hadn't killed it?! What kind of bug was this? Unfortunately, it was far too close to Harley for her to risk lifting the chair and slamming it down again. She'd be open to attack without a doubt. What was she going to do? Was she really going to be eaten by some big bug? What an embarrassing way to go.

Thankfully, Rhode's words caught her before she panicked completely. The thing couldn't climb? Well, that made sense, but where could she climb? The room was too dark to be able to search properly.

She was stepping backward away from the thing as her mind raced, trying to think of something. She knew for a fact there was a book case over by Rhode, but that was all the way over there. Who knew if she'd make it. And the wall she'd been feeling was just that: a wall. Anywhere else would be blind guesses. There might not be anything there.

Wait! She did know of at least one spot! Just a few feet in front of her, there was that table. Unfortunately, the white thing was directly between her and the table... It was her only chance though. She had to get onto that table NOW!

She swallowed, took two quick steps back, and then ran forward quickly. She would have to time this perfectly. With light, it would be easy for her, but in these conditions, it was more a leap of faith. She ran forward two wide steps: one... TWO!

She leaped forward toward where she had felt the table was only a minute ago. She was sure she could make it onto the table successfully. As to whether this thing would snap a strip of flesh off before her feet left the ground... That was up to fate. She would only know once she landed...

Fortunately enough, the scorpion was even more blind in the dark than Harley was. It relied not on sight, but on the vibrations of her feet as they struck the ground, and the scent of her as it perceived her in its pincers. The moment she leaped towards the table, she nearly vanished from the scorpion's perception.

As she hit the table, its vibrations once again got its attention. It skittered towards the table, pincers grabbing the leg briefly before realizing that its quarry had sought higher ground.

For the time being, both of its prey had gone out of reach, so it simply remained where it was. In the near total darkness of the library, it was a soft white shape, barely distinguishable from a trick of the eyes.

And in the dark, it waited.

Rhode heard a thump next, but no screaming. Was Harley dead? Gone in one bite? Nah, a beast/insect thing would have taken more time to savor its prey. Or she would have, at the very least. And the blood lust hadn't let up, so the thing was still on the prowl.

Just great.

She took a moment to crawl her way up the book shelf again, knocking more books down for a hold, before finally pulling herself up on the top of the case and taking a seat. As good a vantage point as any considering she couldn't see very well, but the white form was still visible. "You there, Harley?" she called, trying to make out the blond hair of the human.

As soon as Harley landed on the table, she grabbed the sides to brace herself. The last thing she needed was to have her momentum send her slipping off the table and to the ground. She froze immediately, eyes squeezed shut... waiting.

After a few heartbeats, she opened her eyes, realizing she had, in fact, made it. She scrambled up into a sitting position on the table, ensuring she was as close to dead center (so to speak) as possible. She wasn't sure where it was at the moment, but since she didn't hear the clicking of its movement, it was probably right near the table. She wasn't going to risk crawling to the edge and peeking over to try spotting it just yet.

As soon as Rhode called out to her, Harley nearly leaped out of her skin all over again. Boy... In a way, she was glad it was dark.

"Oh, yeah. I'm peachy-keen over here," she said, still not moving from her spot on the table. "I gotta funny feelin' that maybe this ain't the best place to be pawin' through corners."

Whatever this thing was, it was actually tough. And Harley remembered how the saying went regarding bugs: If you see one, there are at least five more you DON'T see. Who knew how many more were lurking in the dark.

"We gotta get outta here," she said, as though her comrade hadn't thought of that already. Now the question was how were they supposed to get to the door before it caught them. It would sure be easy if they had some guinea pig they could use as bait. And Harley could think of several people she'd met she wouldn't mind feeding this thing.

[Skipping Mr. Scorpion until we do something to it try to leave]

Harley wasn't dead. That was good, she guessed, but it meant they they were both still stuck in this place with a giant white bug below that wanted to eat them! Getting out of this mess wouldn't be easy.

"How? I can't even see the exit," she said right back, "or you."

Of course they needed to get out! Getting to the basement could come later, and there were probably plenty of other rooms around that didn't have killer bugs in them. Destroying this place wasn't worth it if they got eaten.

"Uhh," she blurted without thinking. It was a very good question.

Harley squinted through the gloom, trying to see if she could distinguish anything useful. But it was impossible. The only reason they could make out the psycho bug was it was white, and even then, it wasn't clear.

No, there was no possible way they could find the door before this thing got them. They would have to deal with it first, but killing it seemed like it wouldn't be easy. That only left a few options.

She put a finger from each hand to her temples and squeezed her eyes shut, hoping it would help her think. Now she wished Mr. J were there even more. If he were there, he'd be able to think of a plan no problem-o.

What would Mr. J do?

"There somethin' we can use to distract it?" she thought out loud. What could they possibly use aside from themselves? Harley felt they were lucky enough to escape it as is. Testing that could be a mistake.

Distracting a predator from its prey wasn't an easy task unless some other prey came along. Again, Rhode hoped some poor human would stumble in and give them an out, but it didn't seem like anyone would be coming any time soon. They had to get out of this themselves.

Not fun at all.

"I've got books?" she suggested as though it were an option. She took one out of the shelf beneath her and tested it for weight. Not at all sturdy, but it was better than anything else she had on her, and she couldn't really shoot candles out of another dimension. "Lots of them..." she looked down, just barely able to make out the top of the row she was on. Scaling the shelves was an easy task as well, and there were a lot of books there. Now if she could only manage to find her target.

After peering through the dark, she took up a few more of the books and took what aim she could. "I'm throwing some, so watch out that I don't hit you!" she called, then lobbed four off towards where she thought the thing still was. It should still be over by Harley, right?

One of the books bounced harmlessly off the scorpion's armor, but the other three missed. As each book landed, the scorpion took a few skittering steps towards where the book landed before realizing from the lack of scent that it was not its prey which caused the vibrations in the ground. Before they had a chance to react, it returned back to its waiting place.

"Whoa!" Harley yelped, placing two hands on her head to shield herself from any incoming books. She could hear the books hit the ground in several areas right around her, but none hit her or hit the big bug as far as she could tell.

She did, however, hear the clicking of the thing as it moved about. It seemed as though every time she heard a book hit the ground, the clicking would wonder off in that direction. Harley peered out to see if she could spot the thing and determine how far it was from her, but before she could come to any conclusions, the books had stopped falling and the clicking noise was coming closer to the table again.

"Hey! It moved when you threw the books!" she proclaimed triumphantly. True, it came back, but it did move away at least. The sound of the books worked! Hmm, maybe...

"How many more book ya got over there?" she asked, turning toward the wall she knew Rhode was to try to spot her. "If ya got enough, maybe ya can try throwin' books at the far back of the room. If the bug-o moves, I might be able to sneak towards the walls and feel for the exit."

That, of course was assuming the bug would investigate every noise it heard and that there was only one of these things in the room.

Harley sounded like she might have been hit, but when there was no rebuttal about watching her aim, Rhode assumed the human had avoided a hit. What she said concerning the big insect was much better than a groan of pain. So it was paying attention to the books, was it? Maybe they could...

At the question, Rhode broke from her thoughts of distraction to look down at the shelves. They were in a Library, and Harley was asking "how many books"? Really, Harley was doing nothing to help herself move from Rhode's perception of blonds.

"I'm on top of a bookshelf," she said, trying not to sound too annoyed by Harley's clueless question. A better question was would she be able to throw books at a "back of the room"? She didn't even know if she was at the front or middle or heck, maybe even in the back of the room. She only knew she was up higher than she really needed to be. At least she had no problems with heights.

"I can just keep throwing until you find the door, but I'll hafta stop to get down," she said, bringing back up what she'd thought prior to Harley's question. If the thing responded the way Harley said, then they could possibly escape. There was a problem though. "You could get eaten if I gotta stop" Granted such a thing would be an excellent distraction, but Rhode was still interested enough in the human to keep her from being insect food. She wasn't about to die for her, but still.

As the vibrations stopped rippling along the floor, the scorpion remained stationary, waiting for its prey to touch ground again. Fortunately, the scorpion had a simple mind, and the concept of a prey clever enough to take advantage of its natural blindness was lost upon it.

On top of a bookshelf? Harley had figured she'd climbed up somewhere but to think the kid had managed to make her way all the way up a bookshelf. But that was besides the point.

Rhode apparently had more than enough books to keep the big bug entertained. The girl did bring up an interesting point, though. If Harley was able to find the door, Rhode would have to stop throwing books in order to climb down. That left both of them open to attack, whoever happened to be closest to the thing once the books stopped. Harley herself would be close to the door, but she wasn't about to abandon the kiddo here with that thing.

Though Rhode couldn't see it, Harley put on a nervous grin and scratched the back of her head. "Heh. I guess we both gotta make a run for the exit by then and hope it don't get us first."

There was a ball of fear and anticipation welling up in her stomach at the thought of leaving the safety of the table. She had only just gotten up there, and now she had to venture off it.

"But where is the exit?" Rhode whined, emphasizing the fact that she couldn't very well see where she was in relation to anything but books. If Harley got to the door, it didn't matter where Rhode was if she couldn't find Harley's position before jumping down. "Maybe you can find it, but I can't even see where I'm throwing. I could even hit you." She'd been lucky thus far, but with Harley moving about, it would change the statistics a little.

Even with her whining, she was taking up a few more of the poorly cared for books just in case. Her balance was usually exceptional, but there was no telling what could happen in a place like this, and she was going to be prepared for the worst. Maybe she should bring some for if she got out of here? Not real sturdy, but still a better weapon than nothing.

That was the question now, wasn't it? As far as Harley could figure, the wall area she had been feeling definitely was not where the exit door was. She was also sure the area with the bookshelf Rhode was working on wasn't near the exit either. Rhode's voice was a good marker for the bookshelf area, so the wall Harley was working on must have been that way...

Ugh. All this mental retracing through the dark was starting to give her a headache. Who was she kidding? She was no strategist. This was what she got for not being careful in the first place and losing her sense of direction in the dark.

She sighed to herself and tried to think this through again. If those two areas were eliminated, there were a handful of possibilities left. That didn't make it any safer to search, but it was something to start with.

As for getting hit, that was a problem. Harley could easily make noises or whistle to indicate where she was, but that would attract the thing's attention for sure. The whole point was that Harley remained quiet.

She placed a finger to her bottom lip in contemplation. Boy, oh, boy, planning sure was a toughie. "Maybe if ya choose one general spot and keep throwin' around there. If ya end up throwin' near me..." Oh what to do then? "...I'll say somethin' real quick so ya know to throw somewhere else."

That could go very wrong very easily. So could this entire plan. One screw up would mean both their hides. But how many options did the two have?

Rhode made a noise of annoyance. Nope, Harley definitely wasn't understanding just where Rhode was and that she could barely see. "Hmmmm..." she was trying to figure a way herself for this to work despite what information was lacking.

The problems were for where Harley, the door, and most importantly the insect were. She could guess for Harley by the human's voice, as well as the insect for how she could sense that it wanted to eat them, but the door had no reading. Why couldn't the door have emotions too, it sure would have made this a lot easier! And then Harley had no way of knowing just where Rhode was either, which further complicated the situation.

"Then it'll go after you," she responded. Shouting was sure to draw more attention to Harley than the hale of books Rhode would have been managing. She didn't think that any beast was stupid enough to ignore that.
