Nightshift 31: West Wing, Hall A (second floor)
[from here]

Aidou sprinted up the steps on nimble legs, taking a quick, uniform glance at the area just off the stairs. He was curious over the "spoils" related to Landel's fit, and all of the night's happenings that were apparently in motion because of it, but it wasn't something he could immediately prioritize.

A perfunctory look was all he allowed himself, before he ducked into the hallway.

Deciding to start at the top of the hall and work his way back, the vampire kept up a quick pace, heading straight for the storage room door. He was okay without meeting any abnormally large bats, or any other gross thing, and consequently wasting his energy having to kill them. As usual, the door was locked, but a little ice and violence would solve that. Maybe the flashlight he'd brought would come in handy. It could be used as a bludgeon, couldn't it?

"Here we go," Leon stated softly, pointing down the hall. He noted the hall's other occupant with some relief. This relief was soon followed by guilt, as he'd been thinking of the other man as another target for monsters that would keep them off himself and Kadaj. And that just wasn't any way to think about the situation at all.

"The janitor's closet was... the third on the left," he went on after some thought. "I don't know what's in the other ones." Sadly, they hadn't had much time to check them before Ashton had been attacked.

Yes, this was familiar. Kadaj had been through the first door on the left once, if he wasn't mistaken. The storage rooms sounded much more interesting than that, though, so he ignored it. The only question that remained was which one he should try getting into now. He didn't know enough about chemicals for a visit to the janitor's closet to be particularly useful, but...

Shrugging, he walked up to the door Leon had mentioned and tested the knob. "All the best ones are locked, don't you find?" he said over his shoulder, pouting faintly. "Oh well." He released the doorknob and backed up a few paces, giving the door a thoughtful look. "Don't suppose you know any unlocking spells?" he asked hopefully. He was fully prepared the break the lock if necessary, but with how loud it had been last time, he wasn't sure that was the best option. Besides, kicking the door was just so... why couldn't Loz be here to take care of it? That was his job, not Kadaj's.

"Mmm...no..." Leon gave Kadaj a dubious look before shrugging. "Kicking it in would work best. I can only do so much magic in one night. It'd be a waste to use some just to knock a door out." A fireball might have done the trick, but it also might have blown up half the floor should it reach the chemicals inside.

Besides, Kadaj fancied himself a strong enough guy, didn't he? Surely breaking down a door would be nothing for him.

Disappointing, but he hadn't really expected much better. Oh well. At least he'd tried.

And so the door was kicked. Twice. Where it hurt, if a door could be said to hurt anywhere. Kadaj preferred to think it did, and while that certainly made the fairly menial task a bit more enjoyable (leaders weren't supposed to kick doors in, they were supposed to tell other people to kick them in!), it wasn't by much. Sigh.

Opening the now much more compliant door and sneering at the broken lock, he swept inside.

Now, what could be in the other rooms? Kadaj hadn't the faintest idea, but Leon had said they were storage rooms, too, right? He'd decide what to do after he learned just what they were storing.

Wandering further down the hall, he adjusted his hold on his bag slightly, and, after growling softly in exasperation, set it down and dumped his flashlight and his radio inside. He should have left them behind, stupid things. "Which room do you want to try now?" he asked, picking up the bag again. He didn't particularly feel like going into a room someone else had visited, which meant the room directly across the one they'd just left was out, but maybe Leon had different ideas.

Leon was more hesitant to leave, glancing back into the dark room and eventually pointing back with his thumb. "Wasn't there another door in there?" he asked. "Why don't we check that?" Kadaj was right. There was already someone in the room across from theirs and it didn't look like he wanted to be bothered.

Rather than wait for his current companion to respond, the mage turned and walked back in, motioning for the man to follow. "Come on, we should check it real quick."

[skipping a hall from here]

Finally, they reached the hallway that they actually needed. Stepping away from the entrance, Okita stopped for a few moments, motioning for the boys to do the same. Here there were things to be gained and thus places for monsters to hide and gather. The dark could hide anything and Okita wasn't about to get caught unaware again. Keeping his sword level and low, he waited, listening for any signs of people or things up ahead.

"Third door on the left, fourth on the right - we're getting into both of them," he said, looking over his shoulder at the other two. They'd wait here for a bit, just to let everyone catch their breath. "You're both doing well, I trust? Not winded, hm?"

Heiji trotted up behind Kaito, automatically assuming the rear guard as ordered. Protecting the weapon-less Kaito was the priority, and if something happened to attack them from behind, he was the next best thing to Okita--probably.

"I'm good! This is nothin'!" Heiji said with a grin. He was used to the physical exertion, from both his training and chasing down criminals. Running up some stairs and down a hall was easy for the most part. But if he had to sprint a long distance... probably not.

"Y'holdin' up okay, Kuroba?" He smacked his friend on the back.

Kaito had kept between Okita and Hattori, following Okita's orders about the flashlight. When the man in the lead stopped, Kaito came to a halt, glancing around.

"I'm good, too," he said once both Okita and the detective had inquired. He glanced back at Hattori and gave him a grin.

"Then let's get going," he said cheerfully. If they were both good to move, then Okita was going to push forward. Using the dim light from the flashlight, he watched the hallway for a moment and then closed his eyes, listening. Up ahead he could hear the faintest traces of voices, heavily muffled - people already in other rooms. He couldn't hear any fighting though, nor could he smell blood, so the way was clear for now. Motioning the boys forward with a flick of his hand, he started down the hall, trusting that his white kimono would serve as both a beacon and a target should anything come for them.

Three doors on the right and then-- Dammit! The door was open and even if Okita had yet to go inside, he knew that it had been well raided. He could still see someone moving around inside, but it was another patient - someone they would ignore for now. If they could find anything in here it was going to be a miracle. "It seems we're all late to the party. Move quickly, grab what you need and let's go. More people will attract something."

Orders given, he stepped inside.

[returning from here]

A turn to the left and it was time to go down the stairs. Okita could hear scuffling coming from the right, sounds of a battle that he couldn't afford to get the boys mixed up in tonight. It irked him somewhat to leave those in need alone, but he had his orders and that didn't include getting mixed up in unnecessary fights.

Even he could be ruthless when it was necessary. Motioning to the boys to follow, he set off across the hall and down the stairs.

And all of a sudden, even retreating seemed pointless. Did it really matter? Logically, the vampire knew what he'd seen, or more like, he recognized the thing from what he'd read on the bulletin board. "A shadow that steals the will." How very poetic. Probably true.

But ultimately meaningless to him. All of it.

Barely across the storage room door's threshold, Aidou turned to the wall and leaned against it, finally sliding down into a sitting position with no care for who or what might be around him. A listless sigh built up, lost momentum, and died. Surely he should have learned his lesson before--there was no point in trying to avoid the monsters, or even try to complete tasks and work around them. Everything led to the same end. They'd already gotten Akatsuki and killed him, no doubt. It was only a matter of time before they got Aidou too.

Aidou dropped his chin on his knees, eyes fluttering closed. He was sick of the futility.

Takaya had been having a quiet night Had being the operative word. Walking along, no flashlight, eyes ... well, he didn't want to think about his eyes.

And there was a guy sitting in the middle of the fucking hallway (okay, against the wall. Whatever), begging to be killed. He sighed, annoyed now, and walked over to the kid.

"Get up," he snarled.

Following the curve of his cheek, Aidou flicked the tip of his tongue over one fang, then was too lazy to complete the motion by wetting his lips and let it be. Whatever. With the lower half of his face nuzzled into his forearm, he was just watching the hallway from over top of it, completely uninterested with the comings and goings of the others.

A lot of them he happened to recognize, of course. Including the person addressing him.

Aidou ignored the demand, content to pay Takaya no mind.

This was unacceptable. He'd seen this kind of bullshit before, and as much as Takaya wanted to close his eyes to the things people faced here, Kagetora wasn't about to let free information go to waste.

Reaching down, he grasped the young man's arm and pulled up sharply. There might be a bruise there later, but it was a small price to pay for a life. "I said get. Up."

The normal Aidou would have blown a fuse at the treatment, but now... A vampire like him didn't bruise easily, but the rough jerk was still rather unexpected, and Aidou blinked, brow wrinkling slightly. He didn't try to pull his arm away, not yet. He just rolled up onto the balls of his feet and stood--albeit rather unhurriedly. It was trouble to stand. It wasn't like he was going anywhere, and he didn't want to make the metaphor of a rat in a wheel any more explicit.

They were about the same height, all things considered. Aidou stared for a moment, before turning his face away, and muttering, "You're not my type, with your weird eyes. What do you want?"

Now that he was standing, it seemed as though sitting again would be better.

"We-I don't give a shit if I'm you're 'type'," Takaya growled. "I would rather not trip over your dead body later. Come on." He tugged on the arm, a bit more roughly than he would have under a normal circumstance... Of course, he wouldn't be touching him under normal circumstances.

"You're not thinking clearly you idiot."

'We'? Dead body? Idiot?

Aidou frowned tiredly, not caring enough to consider Takaya's words fully, and not caring enough to fully react. "I don't want to." It wasn't quite a whine up to his usual calibre, because Aidou Hanabusa's whines involved plenty of energy and animation rather than simple blandness, but it was still up there. "I don't care."

Takaya snorted, but didn't let go. "Fine, whatever. Don't care in a place where you won't get killed." He tugged harder. "Let's go."

Must have been repressed homosexuality driving the action--wanting to take a male like Aidou somewhere 'safe' was an expected happening--although the idea didn't bring the usual joy. In fact, Takaya's reasons didn't make him feel much of anything. The noble sighed, followed after the person leading him around by the arm, and wondered when he was going to get it back.

"It's only a matter of time, you know," Aidou started, conversationally. "I won't help you if you get attacked." If there was an attack... well, he didn't feel like fighting. There was really no point in flailing around uselessly. If he couldn't just turn around and walk away... He frowned again, without heat. "I already said I'm not interested," continued the vampire. "Not concerned about fans right now."

Fans? What the fuck was he talking about?

"I don't give a shit about you or anything," he snapped. "I just don't want anybody to die when I can help them." Why was he explaining himself? "You want to die? Tough. Do it later."

He kept to the shadows, there were plenty to choose from. A few passed on ahead of him, but they were of little concern. Most would only wind up bait for the creatures that stalked the halls while he hurried on. Not much time had passed, but he did hate to keep Jack waiting.

Apparently Aidou wasn't enjoying himself near as much this evening as Gin was. The boy was propped up against a wall, easy prey for anyone and anything in the area. Gin smirked and walked by without a word.

"Any other places you need to go, or is it my turn to pick?" Kadaj asked, glancing back at Leon and smirking faintly. It didn't bother him quite as much now, but that didn't mean he couldn't still mention it. Leon would just need to put up with it.

Leon was about to reply with some sort of rebuttal when suddenly his radio came on of its own accord. He fumbled in his coat for it, hanging it from his arm as he then hastily grabbed up his journal (having to waste a couple moments digging through the pocket for the pen) and began scribbling down the clues in the back of it as they were given. He'd hardly had a chance to catch them before. He wasn't going to miss the opportunity now.

It was good to know Jill, or whoever she was, was still all right. At least he was fairly sure it was.

"What do you think?" he asked, holding up the notes for Kadaj to see. "Still up for picking?"

The broadcast had held little interest for Kadaj (he'd been hoping for more bickering, not an uplifting eulogy), so after it had finished, he was left standing in the exact same position he'd been in before with a slightly confused expression as he tried to work out just why Leon cared so much. He'd never bothered with the hints himself, so why was it such a big deal? She hadn't said anything about a gun, had she?

"... Maybe," he replied at length, all but ignoring the notes Leon was showing him. They weren't much help even with Jill's "easy" riddles, as far as he was concerned. "What do you think?"

What a killjoy. Leon pulled the book away, going over the riddles himself. Easy riddles, huh? How were they supposed to be easy when he hadn't even been to most of the places on his map? Maybe if he knew what all the rooms were...

If she really wanted to make it easy, she could have just given directions. Like 'second floor, second hallway, third door on the left' or something.

A room where there is sound almost always other than talking. ...Well he didn't have a clue. No one talked in the library, right? But then there was no sound at all... He'd come back to that one. The place where those monsters that didn't quite make it to the big leagues... okay no monsters if he could help it. Skip that. Then the last one... And the room with warm and wet clothing... now where the heck would you find warm and wet clothing? Somewhere humid, like the greenhouse? No, that didn't seem right somehow. He let his eyes skim over the map on the off-chance that he might see something and then...

"Here!" the boy pointed suddenly, tapping the location several times. "Right here! The laundry room has warm and wet clothing. And it's in this hall! Let's go check it out!" And with that he was running off without giving Kadaj a chance to argue.
