Nightshift 31: F31-F40 Hallway
The conversation with Arlene over dinner had left Naomi with a great deal to think about. Which was both good and bad. It kept her from thinking about Raye, and the myriad of complicated emotions that brought up. But on the other hand, her mind kept wandering to things she'd really rather not be thinking about.

Especially when she was on her way to L's room.

She slipped out of the room, trusting that Arlene would be fine while she waited for whichever teenage girl she had that night, and turned on her flashlight. She knew the way to L's room by heart now. Shaking her head a bit, Naomi headed down the hallway.

Moving around her room was tougher in a wheelchair, but Thursday managed it. She only needed to find her baseball bat and torch, at any rate - anything else would just get in the way, and she was in the habit of travelling light.

Locating it at last, she balanced the baseball bat across her legs, switched the torch on, propped it up against the bat, and wheeled out of the room.

The alarm and announcements were taken in by Beatrix as she sat upon her bed in meditation, but she did not care much about them. This Jill woman was an unknown factor and she wasn't one of the simple-minded that needed another to rely upon. She'd managed to calm herself down by the time Maki left the room, opening one eye to watch the woman leave.

She was mildly worried that the other woman may tell Ryuga what had occurred in this room and the associated information, but she wanted to believe that Maki, as another woman, would understand the need for privacy. It was like an unspoken request and understanding, or so the Bride thought it should have been. If she ever found out that Maki had told dear, very talented Hideki Ryuga about the rape... the Bride may just to decide to treat her like a common street hooker that had seen something she shouldn't have.

Maki was an intelligent woman; she should know what not to open her mouth about.

Taking the map out and shining the light upon it, Beatrix went over the route to the target again.

The door to F33 was a sight to behold after a mad dash, especially when one knew more work was in store for them upon entrance. Rena did not mind, of course. It was just that suddenly, it felt like the end of the night instead of the beginning.

She honestly couldn't be this worn out, could she? Perhaps the feeling was a mere case of nerves. Helping Arlene was going to be a new experience for her, after all.

With a soft inhale, the girl held up a hand and gave a sharp rap at the door.

Upon hearing the knock on the door, Beatrix got to her feet and crossed to the door. Muscles coiled just in case this wasn't her ward come to her room, the Bride opened the door to find Rena. Good - the girl hadn't taken long.

"Are you ready?"

The Bride left the door open and returned to her bed, stuffing the map into her pocket and checking to make sure the long strips of sheet she'd tied about her waist was secure. She picked up the lit flashlight in one hand and the gore encrusted shard of glass. She looked at the wrapping on the 'knife' once in the light before reversing the shard in her hand.

Beatrix cast a look over at Rena, eyebrow raised, to see if she was indeed prepared.

[OOC: Sorry for the delay. I'm going to try and post as frequently as I can; by Friday afternoon, I should be ready to scene like a psycho.]

At the door's click, Rena put on her "best effort" smile, albeit it came off grim instead of enthusiastic. She was glad to see Arlene, however.

"Very ready," the girl replied with a nod. Pens lined her pockets, and she had brought her map and pillowcase. There honestly wasn't anything else Rena could do to be more prepared.

The answer seemed to please Beatrix, though it only showed for a moment in her icy gaze before she turned her thoughts to their path that night.

"Follow closely," she said as she clicked her flashlight off.

The Bride paused just long enough for both her and Rena to find their night vision before heading out, the road to take firmly set in her mind.

Faust wanted to make certain that he had enough time to get everything done that he needed to get done before day came. He was feeling a lot steadier with the morpihne in his system, so, flashlight in hand he headed down the hallway to Mr. Richter's room. He thought it was closer than Farfarello's... But he could be wrong...

Ururu kind of wanted to head to Fai-san's room right away, but she didn't want Orihime to be by herself in case something bad came up. She knew Orihime was strong too, but she needed her power for Fai-san, so the little girl decided it was best to make sure Orihime got to M99 okay by escorting her, and fighting anything bad that might pop up.

Even a bad ghost.

Ururu walked almost to the end of the hall, stopping at the door to F32 and knocking politely. Of course she kept looking around as she waited too. Just in case.

Orihime had really meant to leave as soon as the doors unlocked, but she realized with only a little time to spare that she might need more than her own power to take care of her two charges tonight.

Tearing up pillow cases was harder than it looked on TV. She'd managed to pull the stitches out and pick at the frayed edges until she could tear them into uneven strips but she was still running a little late. She stuffed her strips into her roommate's pillowcase and grabbed her flashlight. What else did she need? She tossed her journal into the bag with a couple of spare pens.

There was a short knock at the door. Orihime hurried over to open it, wondering if one of Tear's companions might be looking for her. "Ururu-chan! Did you want to head over together? That's a really good idea. It'll be a lot easier to kick monster butt with the two of us."

Ururu looked up when Orhime opened the door, and nodded when the older girl spoke. She had even said Ururu had a good idea, which wasn't something she heard too often, and felt nice to hear. She'd have to make sure to tell Jinta-kun the next time she saw him.

"I thought so too. But you shouldn't fight Orihime-san. You should save your energy for Fai-san" It was almost instinctive that Ururu would reach for Orihime's bag, more than willing to carry it for the girl. "I'm still pretty strong here, so I can fight and make sure you're okay when we get to Fai-san's."

And that was that. Ururu wasn't always very stubborn. In fact, she usually wasn't very stubborn at all. But this time, she decided she could be very stubborn, because it was important.

So she held on to Orihime's pillowcase with one hand, and took her friend's other hand before leading her down the hall.

Argilla had been a little concerned when she'd seen Nami during the dinner. Her roommate was curled up in bed sleeping fitfully, her skin abnormally flushed and she was shivering. It was... it took Argilla a moment to recall the word. Illness. She was... ill?

But Argilla didn't know what to do for someone who was ill, even though she had that odd feeling that she should. She did brush Nami's hair away from her face in a comforting gesture that felt natural, like she'd done it a million times before.

She pulled away a little sharply, as though burned and then went to grab the pole that she'd been using as a weapon. Roland. She needed to check that Indra wasn't hunting tonight and if he was then she had to find this Hitsugaya person. She grabbed the pole that she'd ripped out of the wardrobe and stepped outside.

(Coming fromhere.)

Bridget managed to get to the first room he could find, not bothering to look at the number on the door. His hand slid from Kagura's and he slumped to his knees as the door closed behind them. His head was swimming, his back and shoulders burned from the bites (could it be poison? infection? already?), and everything was tilting around him.

Still, he glanced over at his companion. "I'm sorry Miss Sohma," he managed.

Kagura tried to be brave as they ran the last few halls to an empty room. She didn't know who it belonged to, but at the moment, she really didn't care. She was still breathing quickly and hardly registered anything but relief when the door shut behind them. Until she felt Bridget's hand slip from hers as he fell to the ground. He was hurt badly, she had to do something!

"Don't be sorry," she told him, her expression full of worry. "You... you saved me. If I'd been all alone... I... I don't know what I would have done without you."

Almost automatically, she set Roger down beside Bridget, then hurried to the nearest bed, seeking out a clean sheet first and foremost. Without even a pause, she started tearing long strips from the cloth. They didn't even have fresh water to clean the wounds, but at least she could wrap them before they were infected or bled too much more. Once she had a moderately sized pile, she brought it back over to where Bridget sat.

He should be lying down in one of the beds, but... that might spell disaster if she tried to move him herself. "H-hold really still," she cautioned as she started wrapping the bandages snugly around him. It was going to be hard enough to get the makeshift gauze all the way around Bridget's chest without getting too close or putting her arms around him. Her hands shook slightly as she worked.

Muscles trembling, Bridget held as still as he could, eyes shut tightly against the pain. He knew that she wasn't supposed to get too close to boys, so he made sure that he did as she directed him.

The bites on his back were raw, open wounds, the skin around them already inflamed and swollen. There was a large number of the holes, and Bridget knew that had it only been one or two bites, he would have been fine. But there were considerably more. That, added to the head wound he seemed to be sporting now.. well, reality was hanging on by a very thin thread.

Was he really so weak?

She didn't know what scared her more, the fact that another person might find out her secret, or looking so closely at the boy's terrible wounds. It seemed as soon as she'd laid down a layer of cloth, the blood soaked right through. Kagura kept at it though, covering him with several layers as she wound the bandage around and around. It still showed through in some places, but she was confident it would help stop the bleeding in the long run. She hardly noticed the blood that dribbled down her own shoulder. Compared to Bridget, that was nothing, right?

Kagura let out a sigh as she finished. "It... it's not too tight, is it?" She chewed her lip thoughtfully. "You should... probably lie down. Do... do you need help?"

Bridget opened his eyes and smiled up at Kagura. "No, Miss Sohma. It's fine." His expression turned worried. "But you're still hurt."

Had he not already been flushed and warm from his run, he might have blushed. "May... May I see to your wounds, Miss Sohma? I know," he paused to take a breath. He was still feeling a bit dizzy and weak. "I know I'm a boy, but ... I don't want you to be in pain."

"It's ok," she told him, though she felt guilty in doing so. She wasn't revealing everything! Just... just enough that Bridget would know how to be cautious. And... and that was a good thing, right? An ounce of prevention was worth a pound of cure... or something. "Um... I just... I can't hug you. Or... or you can't hug me. It probably sounds really stupid... um... but... but I can't really tell you why."

She pushed herself up from the ground and tore a few more strips from the sheet, then seated herself in front of Bridget, back to him, so he didn't have to move very far to help her. The wound was high on her shoulder though. She couldn't really let him reach it unless she took her shirt off and... and... "U-um... I... I'm not sure how... t-to do this..."

Bridget couldn't help it. He smiled slightly. Was that all? He could handle that. "That's okay," he said softly. "I understand. But, I, I need you to take off your shirt."

He hoped that hadn't sounded as bad as he thought it had. "I ... I'm sorry, but there's no other way to get a good look at your shoulder." He hoped she wouldn't be too embarrassed by this. Bridget certainly wasn't. He'd been around enough women over the course of his life to find nothing truly interesting or embarrassing at seeing a lady naked.

Kagura though... might feel differently.

Kagura had been completely naked in front of friends and strangers enough times that it really oughtn't phase her, but though she could be tough and frightening, at the moment, she was feeling very scared and shy. She was a little bit surprised that he hadn't asked her any more questions. Hadn't even wondered why she couldn't hug boys. It was a good thing, wasn't it?

"Mm..." she hesitated, a blush coloring her cheeks. "D... don't laugh." Kagura pulled the back of her shirt up over her head while she left the front on as much as possible. The deep gashes from the cats she'd run into her first night had scabbed over, but left nasty looking marks. And there was still the bandage on her neck from that terrible vampire! By the time she got out of this place... not even Kyo would want to be with her! Girls were supposed to have pretty, flawless skin! Not ugly scars and battle wounds! She sighed and looked down at the floor.

"Why would I laugh?" Bridget frowned at the wounds, both old and new, and tried to squash his feeling of wanting to protect his friend. They wounds that were old... well, he couldn't do anything about those, and the ones that were new, he was going to try to fix now.

"Let me know if I'm hurting you Miss Sohma," he said, reaching over to pick up the strips of cloth and beginning to bind the bite on her shoulder while trying to keep the shaking of his hands to a minimum. He wished he had something to clean it up with, but this would have to do.

She flinched when she felt his hands on her shoulder. It wasn't often that other people touched her, the only ones she'd ever let get very close were the other Sohmas. And of course, the affection she always forced upon Kyo. "I... um... Girls are... they're supposed to be pretty. I tried... really hard to be pretty... but..."

Kagura bit her lip to keep from crying all over again. She knew it was vain to think this way, but she'd often been told that... that with a personality like hers, all she had was her looks. And if she didn't even have that... "They're going to be scars... a-aren't they..." she managed, her tone defeated.

Kagura tugged her shirt down, then turned to Bridget, studying his expression for a moment before letting her gaze fall back to the floor. "You're... just saying that," she said quietly, unsure of it herself. Why did Bridget have to say all the things she wanted Kyo to say? A slight blush colored her cheeks again as she pulled herself up from the floor. He hardly knew her at all, but he'd said more kind things to her in a single evening than Kyo had her whole life.

"I don't think that... that I'm at all as good as you say," she shook her head then sighed. The way she'd just collapsed after the attack... when Bridget had needed her most she'd been almost hysterical. Even now it was difficult to focus on what ought to be done next rather than bursting into another bout of tears. "I... you... you should probably lie down Bridget-san," her face broke into a little smile, hoping to encourage him. The floor couldn't be comfortable... and he looked pale enough that he might pass out at any moment. And then where would they be?

Kagura let the subject drop and busied herself with the task of gathering up the bedding. The floor was much too cold to be lying on anyway. She could at least make it a tiny bit more comfortable.

After setting a blanket and a sheet on the floor, she put the other one over Bridget's exposed shoulders, drawing it loosely around him. With a surprisingly light touch, she brushed her fingers over his forehead, checking the temperature. It was no surprise how cool he felt. She felt a little chill herself. "Lie down," she told him. Her voice was soft, but there was no mistaking that it was a command, not a request. "I'll help you." Once that was done, she'd be able to set a few pillows in place to make sure he couldn't roll onto his back.

It was strange how cold he felt, when his back had previously felt like it was on fire. Reaching up, Bridget drew the blanket around him and looked up at Kagura, even as he shifted to lie on his side. "What ... about you?"

"I'll be fine silly," she told him, ruffling his hair before she pulled her hand away. She knelt next to him, setting the pillows in place so he wouldn't roll too much.

"Here ah... if... if you want," she suggested quietly, "I'll sit a little closer and... and we can share, ok?" She didn't have too much trouble sitting up for a while longer. Besides, being near someone else made her feel a lot safer.

"I don't want you to get sick, Miss Sohma," Bridget said softly, shifting a bit so that she could share the blanket with him. He knew from reading and talking to others that all he had to do was last until the sun came up and this place would treat both of their injuries.

He lay quietly for a moment then, "Why can't you hug a boy," he asked. "You don't have to tell me," he added quickly. "I was just curious."

Once she'd finished arranging things on the floor, she seated herself at his side, sitting on her knees and covering her legs with the blanket. Much as she might want to lie down, it just wouldn't be a good idea so close to a male.

"I..." she did want to tell him, really she did. Leon and Javert and even Trevelyan had found out the night before and she hardly knew them at all! Granted, she didn't know a lot about Bridget either, but he was very kind and one of the only boys to ever really... be nice to her. "I can't... really say. Akito-sama would... would get really mad."

She swallowed back her fear. She wasn't sure which was more frightening; the thought of staying in this place another day or the thought of telling Akito-sama that she'd messed up and strangers had found out about their family's curse. "I'm already going to be in... in a lot of trouble. Something... bad happens... it happened last night."

Hatori was here so those three might not even remember seeing her cursed form by the time they escaped. She was surprised that Hatori hadn't done anything to Javert either, since he said he'd met with her cousin. But... Javert had said he wouldn't tell anyone. Did that mean Hatori too? She hoped so... It would be really sad if Hatori had to erase their memories.

Bridget smiled and closed his eyes. "That's okay. I won't ask again." She had touched him before, so it wasn't touch that she was worried about, just a hug. Well, he thought, I couldn't hug anyone right now if I wanted to so...

Reaching out, he very lightly touched her hand. "Nobody can blame you for what happens at night," he said, voice still soft. "Whatever it was, it isn't your fault." He smiled again. "And if anyone gets mad at you, I'll send Roger after them."

"I'm sorry," she said with feeling. Much as she wanted to believe that it was that easy to defy someone like Akito-sama... she knew it just wasn't possible.

Kagura didn't shy away when he touched her hand this time, but she wasn't sure how she ought to feel about it either. It felt far more confusing that it should. She gave him a smile, but didn't quite mean it (though the thought of Roger attacking Akito-sama was very amusing...). "That's... nice of you to say so Bridget-san." But he didn't understand and she couldn't say much more. Akito-sama would find her at fault no matter what the circumstances were, of that she was sure.

As much as she wanted to accept Bridget's praise, she knew she couldn't. Whoever it was that he thought she was, that just... wasn't right. She was cursed and her personality was just as scary as Haru's. And then there was Kyo.

There was a truth there that she'd been hiding from for a very long time. A truth that she just didn't think she was strong enough to face. She'd thought she had the courage only a few days ago, but this place had taken it all away. She'd meant to tell him all of it then. Meant to remove the heavy weight of guilt she'd been carrying since she was a child. But maybe this was some kind of karma. She knew now exactly how scary it was to be locked up, to be thought some crazy monster... and the thought of living every day like that chilled her to the bone.

"I'm sure you're right," she lied, though she tried to keep up her smile. "I'm probably just worrying too much. It's very gentlemanly of you to offer, but... I think I'll be fine."

"Miss Sohma... Will you still be my friend in the morning?" He knew that some people didn't want word of what they did at night or who they were with to spread, so he wanted to make sure that it was okay if he treated her like a friend in the light of day.
