Nightshift 31 - M41-M50
Qui-Gon tested his senses. They were as good as could be expected in Landels, a bit improved with meditation, but nowhere near his level back on Naboo. He would just have to play it more cautiously than normal.

The Jedi Master was disturbed less by the piercing alarm earlier and more with Martin Landel's rant - the man's venom could be heard even over the crackle of the intercom and he hoped that whoever this Jill was, that she would be doubly careful, for it sounded like Landel was out for blood. Shaking his head, Qui-Gon gathered his things for another foray outside in the halls - his knife was retrieved from its hiding place and he checked the power source on the flashlight by flicking it on. The light was a bit weaker this time. Obviously Earthian power sources weren't very long-lasting, not be the standards he was used to.

Opening the door, Qui-Gon stepped out into the darkened hall and paused once more to extend his senses in the Force, doing as best a sweep as he could...

Well, that had been melodramatic. Vlad unfortunately wasn't a good person for throwing stones about having little verbal fits of temper, but at least he usually didn't rant over broadcast systems.

Then again, why not? The "doctor" had a captive audience and nothing he'd said was likely to change their feelings. Might herd a few curious people towards the location he'd described.

His roommate gone, Vlad relaxed in the bed. He wasn't in any shape to go exploring tonight himself, and probably wouldn't be for a while. Little better to do than relax and sleep a little more, try to recover. Not comfortable even laying still, but it was better than trying to move around...

Leon finished his dinner and his chat with Yohji. Psychics and zombies. Clearly a strange collection of people here. He had an assignment tonight, orders and a mission. That felt good.

First things first: he had to go and collect that baseball bat.

Yohji sighed and shook his head when Leon went off, a self-depreciating smirk curling his lips. He'd said more than he'd meant to, but there didn't seem like much point in hiding that kind of thing when the other guy was talking about freaking zombies. And yeah, he figured Leon was suspicious but he really wasn't sure how to break the news that he was a professional killer. Ah well.

He took a long drag on his cigarette before stubbing it out against the wall. Ah, that had felt good.

Now, just to meet Schuldig.

He stepped out of the room and walked along the corridor until he found what he hoped was the right room and knocked on the door.

Schuldig was still in a less-than-pleasant mood from his conversation with Aya, but he grinned at Yohji when he opened the door. At least one of the men of Weiss could be reasonable, no matter how high maintenance he was. "Isn't it bad form to show up for a date empty-handed?" he inquired, smirking. "You might not be as much of a charmer as you give yourself credit for, Kudoh."

Well, at least Schuldig didn't seem to have decided to hate him since that morning which was a reassuring sign. He returned the smirk with a smile of his own and gave a little shrug of apology. "Well, they seem pretty short on places to buy flowers and restaurants are right out, so I guess you'll have to make do with smokes," Yohji replied, patting hs pocket where he kpet the cigarettes.

"Mm. It'll do." Schuldig reached out and gathered a handful of Yohji's shirt, tugging him into the room and closing the door behind him. "We've got a bit of a wait," he observed casually, shooting the assassin a sidelong look of undisguised cunning. "Crawford always takes his time getting here, and Farfarello's meeting up with a few people before he shows up. Any ideas how to pass the time...?"

Yohji laughed quietly and let Schuldig drag him in by the shirt, not much caring how it looked to anyone passing by.

"How to pass the time, huh?" Yohji asked, raising one eyebrow. "Well we could always sit and discuss plans and strategies," he said with a teasing smirk. "Or we could do something more fun."

"Not too much fun, I'm afraid," Schuldig replied with a faint scowl as he glanced down at his chest. "Our entertainment will have to be somewhat...restrained, given what that bastard did to me. But we might still be able to manage something properly diverting, if we're creative. Any ideas?"

Yohji's expression darkened at the memory of what had happened last night. Schuldig... any of them, could have died so easily. "Maybe the painkillers would have been a better gift huh?" he asked wryly.

He smiled slightly. "I'm sure I could think of a few diverting things," he agreed and moved forward to kiss Schuldig.

Claude had awoken with a start once he'd heard the brief alarm go off towards the end of dinner. The blond gave a wince as he jerked his wounds, but he was more careful as he eased himself to a sit. A guy really couldn't get any peace and quiet to himself around here, could he?

It wasn't until he heard the Head Doctor's raving that Claude was able to get a clearer idea of what had rudely woken him up. Someone had stolen something, huh? He wondered if it'd ultimately wind up affecting the captives here one way or another.

Still, regardless of the man's reasons, he sounded pretty scary when he was pissed. All that stuff about the experiments and how they were helpless in freeing people who'd been taken made Claude's stomach turn, and with a grimace, he made his way over to his closet to get ready for tonight.

He was vaguely distracted as he changed into his uniform pants and shoes, with thoughts of Ashton, and the deep mess they were all stuck in, and just what did he intend to do now anyway? It wasn't until he heard something small drop to the floor that he was pulled out of his thoughts, and the blond looked down.

"Oh, hey," he remarked to himself once he saw the wrapped piece of candy he'd received from Ashton a few days ago. "I forgot about this." He squatted down to pick it up before rolling it around his palm for a brief moment. It was kind of funny to think that this was a piece of candy from nearly 500 years into his past. What kind of ingredients did they use? Did it really taste like root beer? And why did they make it in the shape of a barrel, of all things?

The thought of barrels made Claude sigh a little. He wondered what Ashton was up to right about now. He probably had plans with Dias, so...

[ From here. ]

Another empty hallway. Guy could hear the vague sounds of talking from some of the rooms he passed, which surprised him a little. Did that many people stay put at night? Then again, there could be all sorts of reasons for staying in for a night. That was basically what he and Luke had done last night, after all.

Which was why he hoped he would find something to do with himself once he got his bat back. He felt bad taking the weapon away from Claude when he probably needed it as much as he did, but hopefully realizing that importance of having something to protect himself would spur Claude to go looking for a bat (or whatever else) of his own.

Reaching M44, Guy leaned forward and knocked twice, sharply. "Claude?" he asked, raising his voice slightly. "It's Guy." He hoped Asch had already left, since he'd rather he dealt with him as little as possible.

As it turned out, Asch had already left for the night -- without breathing a word to Claude, no less. It irritated the blond, to be honest. Who slept around all day, and then slipped out of bed and went outside without saying anything, anyway?

Ah, well. He got the impression Asch was just like that. But still...

Claude was startled when he heard a clear, solid knock at the door. So Guy had come to get his bat after all! That was a relief. He didn't want to deprive the other man of a weapon any longer -- not with how dangerous nightshift could be! After shoving the candy into his pocket, he hastily slipped into his Federation jacket. "Hey!" he called brightly. "You can come in!"

It was about then that he tried his flashlight, and, with a small frown, he realized that his stunt in the greenhouse had used up the last bit of energy it'd had left. "Rats," he grumbled to himself before turning towards his desk and rummaging around for that extra set he'd seen the other day.

Guy walked in to find Claude fiddling with his flashlight. It looked like he was dealing with the same problem, and the servant couldn't stop himself from laughing lightly at the coincidence. "Mine just ran out, too," he explained, glancing down at his own flashlight that was now stocked with new batteries.

"I was thinking that we might be able to get some out of those portable CD players in the music room." It wasn't a priority, necessarily, since this second set would last them for a time, but he would have to get around to that eventually.

He looked over the other patient, taking in his outfit. He had seen it before, but it just reminded him that he needed to check his room for his own clothing. He was usually so eager to get out during the night that he forgot about all of that. Clothing didn't seem too important in the midst of everything else going on.

"Oh, really?" Claude asked, glancing over his shoulder with a rueful smile. Guy had been here at least a few days longer than him, right? It sounded like, for all of his warnings to conserve battery power, Claude was the one who had needed to listen to them more than anyone. Kind of embarrassing, really, but that was the way of things. He'd just have to be more careful with his second set, right?

"You're probably right," the younger blond said as he grabbed the fresh batteries and slipped them into his flashlight. He hadn't had a chance to personally investigate the music room, but if there were portable CD players in there, then there were definitely batteries. "It's actually on my list of rooms to check out -- along with any place I can get a bunch of metal, since I'll be needing it for a weapon in the near future."

Some flasks would have been great, too, but Claude figured he'd be better off asking about that on the bulletin instead of aimlessly wandering around the second floor for things that may or may not be readily available. Best to keep things simpler for now.

He straightened his jacket collar, though it was difficult to tell whether it was because he was aware of Guy noticing the uniform, or if it was simply some kind of habit. "Oh!" he said suddenly with raised eyebrows. "That's right, you came for your bat, didn't you?" He made his way over to his bed and lifted up the mattress before pulling the weapon out from its hiding place.

"I can't thank you enough, really," he added as he turned to extend the bat back out to Guy. "It seriously saved my skin last night. I ran into a giant scorpion back in the greenhouse -- which there's no shame in running from if you ever stumble across one, by the way. I don't think they're really worth fighting unless you have to." Boy, had he figured that out the hard way!

It was relieving to hear that Claude was on the lookout for materials to get a weapon made, and while Guy felt like commenting on that, he didn't want to make the other blond feel like he was praising him for good behavior. The age difference between them wasn't that large, after all, and Guy had always done his best to make sure he didn't treat Luke a child, even with the babysitting job.

"A scorpion, huh," Guy commented in slight wonder as he took his bat back from Claude, glad to feel the weight of it again. He hadn't realized how attached he had gotten to the thing until he knew what it was like to go for a short while without it. It was kind of ridiculous, really, especially since he would probably be ditching it (or donating it to someone else, at least) for a real weapon eventually.

"Well, I'll keep that in mind. So, what were--" He had been planning on asking if the other patient had any set plans for the night, but it was at that point that he heard the sound of a radio turning on. He didn't know where it was coming from, exactly, but it made sense that there would be one or two hanging lying around in the room.

So this was the woman the Head Doctor had been addressing earlier, then? Guy was glad to hear that she had been successful, if only because it was some sort of small strike against the man who was holding all of them captive. And she even had clues for them? The minute she brought it up, he listened even more attentively, intending to commit the information to memory.

Claude was visibly startled when his radio came to life. Ever since "Mr. Radio" had met his fate, he'd been unsure whether to expect regular messages or not. Looked like he was getting his answer.

The blond's eyebrows furrowed as he paid close attention to the message. So that's what Landel was so pissed about, he said to himself. Well, at least the bastards weren't going to do any weird brain surgery on Jack's body. No one deserved that kind of thing, dead or not, especially someone who'd been so helpful to them. And it was encouraging to hear they still had friends outside the institute walls, people who were capable of slipping in and out undetected. Things definitely weren't hopeless just yet.

When she was finished, Claude scratched the side of his head in thought. She'd sounded a little unsure of herself towards the end, hadn't she? Maybe she felt like she had big shoes to fill, or maybe something else was distracting her. Hopefully things would turn out okay. But in the meantime, it sounded like there were some clues for them to think on.

"Room with sound other than talking?" he echoed with a frown. "What, the music room? That's the only place I can think of that fits that description, but..."

When the alarm sounded, Artemis dropped the water glass he had been holding and winced as it shattered on the floor. Something was going on. He wasn't sure what, but something had shoved a bee rather forcefully up Doctor Landel's bonnet.

The announcement that followed made him sick to hear--more so than the amount of water he'd downed in the past minute. There was no chance of rescue, then. The doors were too heavily locked. Whenever he, Haku, or anyone would be taken, he'd be powerless to intervene. Before, during, and after.

He looked down at the glass on the floor. "I should get dressed. Skuld and Farfarello are waiting for me."

Artemis gladly accepted the hug and held on for what was probably longer than necessary. Tonight he was safe. Tonight they were both safe. Relatively speaking of course.

"You as well. I don't want to wake up and find your bed empty. That would greatly displease me."

He remembered that Zabuza usually came in short order after the doors unlocked, so he stepped away and began kicking the glass shards under his bed. Once he was done, he moved to the closet to change. As usual, he closed himself inside the closet and began to undress.

"What are your plans for tonight?"

Hikaru's doodling had kept him occupied for quite some time. It was by no means great art--quite the contrary, in fact (even by his standards). It was total crap and he knew it, but drawing a decidedly unattached Light being "RABU RABU" with an overly-affectionate Misa was fun as hell, especially if you added "Tamaki the Knight in Shining Armor" to the mix.

He was so engrossed in his drawings that the siren going off caught him completely off guard. It startled him so badly that he just about jumped out of his skin. "What the hell was that for?!"

Well, at least he was ready for when Nightshift began. As soon as the doors unlocked, he grabbed his flashlight and set out. Hopefully, Kaoru would have the sense to stay in his room until he came and got him.

It had been a while since Renji'd had a day that hadn't ended with worry or anger. This was something of a change, and he didn't mind it. The conversation he'd had with Sora had really helped clear his head. There was something about the boy that just encouraged determination and positive thinking.

He took one quick look at the strange not-really-a-sword in its hiding place. It was still secure and undisturbed, and he'd leave it there for the next night. Since they'd picked it up in the basement, he decided that one thing they should check for was something it could be used for down there; it was completely useless as a weapon. He'd made a quick sketch of what they knew of the basement to take along; he also added a quick but decent enough sketch of the not-really-a-sword.

When the doors opened, he was ready. Flashlight off because he no longer needed it for the familiar places, he was out the door like a shot, one hand resting on the hilt of his katana to keep it steady as he ran.

Talk about a rude awakening. The siren was startling, to say the least, and it was no surprise that that's what woke Asch. He frowned, listening to the doctor's annoucement, but he simply turned onto his side and faced the wall. He didn't feel up to starting a conversation with Claude, so hopefully the blond would think he was still somehow asleep.

It wasn't until he heard his roommate moving around that he decided to get ready himself. Although that only consisted of making sure he had his flashlight, since he didn't plan on carrying his journal or map with him tonight. He already knew where he was going, so he didn't see a reason to.

As an afterthought, he checked to see if he still had the knife from the other night. And, to his surprise, he did. Huh... Well, Jade had yet to ask about it, so that likely meant he didn't miss it--at least, that's what it meant as far as Asch was concerned.

So, armed with the knife and flashlight, he slipped out the door and headed down the hall.
