Nightshift 31: Recreactional Field
[from here]

Last night he'd only been intent on getting to Fai's room. Tonight was no different, but since he wasn't moving quickly to make up for time, he was able to take a moment when he stepped out into the open air and see just what the place was. An outdoor area, grassy, and completely dark save for what little light the nighttime sky provided. This was what Kurogane was more used to, something a bit more natural and closer to his own world, not like the building he was about to head back into.

He could not see anything through the darkness, or sense something if it were there, but in any event, he did not want to stick around. Taking another left he stayed against the wall, going quickly but cautiously towards the next door. All the while he kept his eyes glued to the open field for any unwelcome hindrances.

Now he was... somewhere outside. Was this the right place to pass through? With a soft click Zoro turned on his flashlight. Light swept across the grounds and Zoro frowned, unsure if his inability to recognize the landscape was from the fact that he hadn't actually looked at it properly the previous nights or if it was because he was lost.

Well. There were walls at least, that was something familiar-- oh, wait, had that shed been there the last few nights? There'd been something like that when he and Luffy had been out in the daytime but Zoro couldn't be sure if that was even the same place. For all he knew, there were several different fields scattered around the institute and he'd been led to a completely different one that day. The building was just too damn big.

At least, that what it felt like to the lost swordsman.

Frown plain on his face, Zoro approached the shed and knocked loudly on the wooden doors. There didn't appear to be much to the whole structure in general-- he could have broken it with a snort back home-- and Zoro decided that it was worth a quick look. Maybe there was something useful inside.

At least that hadn't been a waste of effort. Already the presence of three weapons gave him a slightly stronger sense of security than when he'd been completely unarmed. Though Zoro was no slouch even without his swords, he had to admit that his fighting style was more efficient when channeled through the proper means.

Now... where was he going again?

For once, it finally seemed that luck was on the God-General's side. He had somehow managed to avoid running into anyone, and had even reached his first destination rather quickly. If things continued at this pace, then maybe tonight wouldn't be another waste.

Now he just had to remember why it was he wanted to come out here in the first place. He remembered planning to come here the other night, although certain... circumstances had prevented that at the time.

Regardless, Asch knew there was a reason. He simply needed a moment to remember what that reason was.

Despite the silence and darkness that surrounded her, Nia just couldn’t waste the opportunity to breathe in the crisp air. This was truly her first time outdoors ever since she arrived, and she hadn’t really imagined it to be so vast. After all, this was a prison!

However, it was around that time when her flashlight started to flicker wildly. The girl did her best to tend to the tool, frowning when no amount of shaking could fix it. Kittan swore to her that anything could be fixed if one whacked at it hard enough against something, especially if that ‘something’ was a beastman.

Maybe that was why it wasn’t working since there were no beastmen nearby. Nia frowned as she walked, shaking and waving the flashlight as hard as she could. Unfortunately, her grip hadn’t been tight, and so it was inevitable for the thing to slip right out of her hand. She gave a gasp as the thing flew far into the field, running after it in the general direction.

And it seemed that the luck that had been with him at the beginning of the night had gone elsewhere. Granted, Asch was still fine himself, although he could hear others beginning to shout. That likely meant something had gone on the attack out here. He couldn't see any aggressors, and he certainly wasn't about to use his flashlight and risk drawing attention to himself, but he was willing to bet that's what it was.

Of course, standing in the dark probably wasn't the brightest of ideas. It may have lowered the chance of being seen by one of the Institute's monsters, but it also meant that other patients wouldn't easily see him. And, while that normally wouldn't have been a problem, that was going to be a disadvantage tonight. That much was proved by a flashlight suddenly flying in from seemingly nowhere, striking the God-General in the head before it fell to the ground.

"Gah!!" The impact provided enough of a surprise to send him stumbling backwards, although he was able to save himself from the humiliation of falling down completely. Reaching a hand up to the bump on his head, Asch asked, "Who the hell threw that thing?!" On the bright side, at least he now knew the lights could be used as decent weapons if nothing else was available... Damn, those things hurt!

"To you~," he finished, pushing the door open for the other to go through. It was relatively empty in the field, which X took to his liking. He let out a sigh, enjoying the feel of being out in the open.

Much better than staying in his room all night, however unsafe.

Wasn't it a wonderful feeling? Fresh air, a nice crisp night... yeah, Xigbar enjoyed this far more than any number of Institutes or rooms or stuff. While the walls blocked some of the freedom he wanted, Xigbar was still too giddy to care. He started making his way across the field, heading to the equipment shed. "Let's all congratulate us with another cup of tea..."

He stopped in the middle of the field, and glanced at Luxord with another wide grin. "Just to let you know, looks like my turn's up for getting a weapon. Just need to gather some stuff and I'll get it... ain't that sweet? We'll finally both have what we need."

Um, no, was the first thing to pop into the Gambler's mind, his smile fading into a frown once more. Luxord needed out of this asylum. He needed perhaps a nice, small island by himself with naught but a book, a communications device, and personal computer in case there was ever a need. Nothing but the view, no responsibilities and no need for those pesky shadows of stress following him to the grave as they were here. That was what he needed, he thought to himself, more than anything else.

Except he'd most likely hate it.

He pondered this for a moment before shrugging it off and the smirk returned. "And whatever have you pulled me in for, then? Goodness knows I'm not as much help as that little Captain of yours could be."

Rangiku stepped warily out onto the Recreational Field, looking around for any sign of monsters and finding only patients for the moment. She turned back when they seemed to be safe and gestured for the others to follow her. "It's clear," she said quietly. "The wall is in this direction," she said, heading off quickly towards it.

It wasn't as high as he remembered it, or perhaps he was being optimistic. At any rate, it wasn't a serious obstacle so long as there were no monsters around to be either chasing them back indoors or over the walls with greater speed. Mark glanced over at the other man traveling with them, who had his baseball bat at the ready, and Mark's own hands wandered towards the gardening tools tucked in his pants. The trip had been quick and silent. Like a proper raid. Why did I agree to this, again?

He wasn't sure he wanted to be first over the wall, but he certainly couldn't go last, so he trotted quickly after Rangiku. The real barriers, from what he understood, generally lay past this point. He remembered the map from Arts & Crafts of the first floor (aren't we Arts & Crafts, now?) and how many rooms remained before that oddly-colored, much-desired tile.

Leon eyed the wall. It didn't look too terribly challenging; he'd scaled worse in his training. "I can take rear guard," he offered Rangiku. "Make sure nothing follows us."

Renji hugged the wall as they came out of the building. There wasn't anything that could be out in the field that they wanted to deal with. He took them over to the wall between the field and the courtyard, then dropped to one knee, cupping his hands in front of him. He looked at Thursday.

Max, he thought might be able to make the wall on her own. He didn't know about Thursday on a normal way, but with her leg freshly healed, it'd probably be better to not push it.

Max had followed silently, well used to the stealth in creeping about dark hallways and wanting to avoid detection. This was, after all, her element, and as they slipped outside and she spotted the direction Renji was taking them, she motioned Thursday over to Renji, even as she turned her back on them, her dark eyes scanning the blackness of the recreational field in search of anything that moved. Well remembering the larger creatures that often lurked out-of-doors in this place, she wanted nothing jumping out and surprising them.

"Can you two make it over alright?" she asked over her shoulder, her voice hushed so as to not draw attention.

Thursday glanced at Renji, quickly realizing what he wanted her to do. She supposed she should be faintly insulted that he didn't think she'd make it over the wall on her own, but sheer reason overrode that. Pride mattered little in a place like this.

"Probably not," she said in response to Max's question. Tucking the bat and torch under one arm, she placed her good foot in Renji's cupped hands and nodded, ready to be boosted up.

[From Here]

The fresh air hit him like a bucket of cold water, slamming into his senses as he pushed open the door. He had to stand there for a moment so that he could drink in the cold night air and enjoy how it washed over him and cleared his mind. The fuzziness of drugs seemed so far away. Even the ache in his temple from where he had been kicked seemed to fall to the back of his mind as the chilled air swirled around him.

He stepped out onto the soft grass of the Recreational Field and allowed the door to close behind him. He wanted to walk, but he ended up stumbling as his legs refused to adhere to his orders completely. That was enough to make him realize that the sedative was still in his system.

With that thought came the crash of the fuzziness and the aches of his body, and Cloud made a soft noise. He made it a few more steps before he faltered without anything to hold him up or brace himself on, and he sunk to his knees. It felt humiliating to be there again.

Absently, he touched his arm where a bruise had formed. It was no safer outside than it was in, but he felt better in the fresh air even if he remained on his knees.

Coming outside, the first thing that Brooklyn noticed was the figure a few feet ahead. He appeared to be alone, and on his knees - not a good position to be in when there could be any number of strange creatures around. The gargoyle looked around a bit, just to make sure he really was alone, before approaching.

"Hey," he said, stepping up beside the man and keeping the shovel lowered so he'd know he wasn't a threat. "You all right? It's not a good idea to be out here alone like this." Which was really something of a hypocritical statement, seeing as he didn't have anyone with him either.

At the sound of a voice, Cloud lifted his head a little and turned so his glowing blue eyes peered over his shoulder. He stared at the newcomer for a moment before turning his head back to where he had been staring at the grass. It was getting a little cold out here, but at least he had not been attacked... yet.

He lifted his head again, rolling it back and massaging the bruise on his temple. "I am usually alone," he said offhandedly. He closed his eyes and sighed heavily, considering making an attempt to get to his feet. He would not last long if he was kneeling all over the place. "Sorry... just a little disoriented...." More than a little if he was being honest.

Soubi stepped out first, checking the area out of habit. There were a few patients out tonight but none of these 'birds'. Relaxing his grip on Ritsuka, he offered and empty smile and stepped aside, releasing the hand completely. "Where will they be?"

That fake smile stabbed straight through him and Ritsuka looked away, turning his eyes to the skies instead of Soubi's face. He knew this would be hard on the older man, but he needed to do this. Not knowing was driving him insane - literally. He had no idea whether or not he was still...well, a child. The answer to that question would change a lot in his life. Seimei had remained pure when he came here, so why hadn't he? No one else from their world had come with ears that could be lost so easily and while evidence pointed toward a simple genetic shift, Heiji's comment yesterday was driving doubt between him and reason. Anything to make you go crazy faster.

That damn stupid doctor.

"I don't know. Somewhere outside is the only clue I had." Without the hand to hold, Ritsuka rubbed his arms, wishing he'd brought his jacket. In the rush to leave tonight, he'd gone and forgotten it like an idiot. "...I guess we just walk around until one of them shows up?"

[[From East Wing, North Hall 1-B.]]

For once Signum's caution was perceptible, not the usual momentary scan of a new room before she moved into it. This place had a way of impressing upon you the limits it had imposed, and Signum was no longer counting on instinct alone to win through against the dangers of the night. Intuition, informed by experience, was her greatest asset, but it need not be the only.

The plan was to hop the wall... but her eyes caught on the small shed on the opposite side of the enclosed field. Her trowels were acceptable weapons, their metal blades capable of killing with enough force behind them, but they lacked the sharp edge to be useful when only the opportunity for a glancing blow could be created. A weapon with more reach and heft could be useful as well, and there was always a need for makeshift arms among the patients... and the shed might provide.

The thought that the delay might again prevent her from reaching the basement gave her pause, but in the end couldn't stop her. The benefits of the detour were real, and she was making good time on her own. Better to take the more certain opportunity in front of her.

Staying within the relative safety of the wall's shadow, Signum began to move around the perimeter of the field to the activities shed.

The shed not too far off caught Reno's eye in particular, especially once he saw someone moving around it. And illogical as it was, he really preferred having company and over whatever tools might be in that shed. But those could be a bonus, too.

He moved up next to the girl, shining his flashlight deliberately nearby--without blinding her, obviously--just so she wouldn't swing around and take his head off. People around here were so jumpy sometimes.

"So are we going in the same direction?" he asked casually.

Signum took another look around the field as she stepped out of the shed, then explained to Reno: "The access point for the basement is in the kitchen's refrigerated pantry. We'll go over the wall into the courtyard; there's a door to the cafeteria there."

That said, she took off towards the wall. Like Reno, she thought of the open fields as relatively dangerous and preferred not to hang around them for too long.

Reno joined her at the wall, testing the strength of one of the vines to see if it would hold. Few things snapped under his weight, but this place pulled funny things on him and the last thing he wanted was to fall flat on his ass.

"You don't need a lift, do you?" he asked, keeping his tone light. He doubted she'd take him up on her offer—she didn't seem the damsel type—but you never knew.

"Maybe we should head away from the others?" Shana wondered, frowning at the sight of other patients out here. "If we're looking for something to fight, I don't want anyone else not intending the same to get hurt. Do you think it's likely?"
