OMG It's Seamus

This is Seamus. We adopted him from a rescue on Sunday and he's an excellent addition to our family.

With a little extra TLC he'll be fine.

Hi
Hi :)

My name is Geraldine and I'm a owner of a lovely 4 yr old dalmation - Pirate. She's a very sweet dog , good natured and excitable. I hope someone can give me some tips on how to clean up her fur :) I let her stay in the house 1/2 the time, and she sheds everywhere. I've got an armchair (cloth covered) originally red... but now black and white :) I've tried vaccuming, but doesn't help.

Thanks

What do you do with your dalmatians?

I know they're in the AKC "non-sporting" category, so what I've gleaned from my research & experience is they're sort of a "jack of all trades" type dog. They're not herding dogs, but I've seen some trained to do herding; they're not working dogs but I've seen some on farms; they're not hounds or heelers or bred for any specific purpose, but I know with good training they can be anything from a family pet to competitive agility dog to working with livestock just fine. I was wondering what you do with your dalmatians? I know certain breeds have certain breed-instincts and breed-inclinations (shepherds for herding, retrievers for retrieving, etc), but dalmatians' history is all over the map.

Mine is Dahlia, and she's mostly a house-dog. I work with horses a lot and wanted to train her to be more of a "barn dog," but she has physical limitations and medical problems which prevented that; and my particular dog isn't too bright and wasn't quick to catch on to the job. ;) I get a lot of flack from friends who just know the breed from poor breed-stereotype as stupid, hyper, unintelligent (I can't emphasize this part enoguh apparently) dogs unsuitable for a "job." As someone who works with horses, I am around a lot of herding dogs and dogs with JOBS, and I want to know what all of your opinions are on the subject. I want to know there' hope out there for the breed yet! I'm around australian shepherds all day, who are keen and intelligent and love their job. What helps fulfill them as a breed includes lots of herding and training work. What fulfills your dalmatian? I look forward to the day I get another dalmatian puppy, and I just want to prove all those dalmatian-haters wrong by raising an intelligent, loyal, working dog - whatever "working" is.

What's your dog's role? House-dog, jogging buddy, herding dog, obedience training? I'd love to know!

new social network for pet lovers

Hey guys, I thought you all might be really interested in ZooToo.com which is a new social network for animal lovers (just like I said in the subject haha). I actually found my groomer with it using their pet services function. So if you're like me and have a dog AND a cat, this is a place where you can put them (and other kinds of pets/animals) up in your own zoo. there's also pet news, meet-up groups, product reviews by members, and tons of other stuff.

Anyway, just thought I'd share. I'm looking to gain friends on there! OH and i almost forgot to mention that they do good for the animal community by making over shelters and giving a portion of the ad rev gained by people being on the site to shelters. i think that the more you use the site/invite people/make friends, the more $$ goes to the shelter of your choice... hence my motivation to get friends!!!!

Add me!!!!

Full Dalmatian or...?

My boyfriend and I recently rescued a dog who was listed as a Dalmatian. He somewhat looks the part, being that he's all white and has very pronounced round spots...But his face is elongated. I'm not sure if this is due to the fact that he's very skinny (which he is) or if he's mixed with something. I just thought I'd ask here and see what you folks think. It doesn't matter to us whether he's full or not -- we love him and he really is the sweetest baby. We're just curious. :)

Thanks!

Welcome and Hello!

I just wanted to welcome any and all new members and to just stop in and say "Hello!" I am SO glad to see that this community is still active and people are posting their pictures and questions about their lovely dalmatians.

It has been 3 years since our Buddy passed. We had him for only 2 weeks but there really isn't a week that goes by that we don't think about him. My daughter really wants a doggie and I am tempted to get another dalmatian but we re also thinking of having another child and don't know if we can handle the work of a dog and 2 young kids.

If there are ever any questions or concerns related to this community please email me at janisfan@livejournal.com. I don't keep this community on my flist as it is difficult seeing your lovely pups on a frequent basis. I do try to check in every few months or so.

rehoming a dalamatian

Hi Everyone! My partner and I have been trying to adopt a dog for about a year now, but due to us having a cat and living in a flat, shelters seemed to not have the right dog for us. Last night we were contacted by a woman seeking to rehome her eight year old dalmatian, due to her 15 year old terrier deciding, out of nowhere, to attack the dalmatian.

My question to you is: I have had a dalmatian before, but I was eight. She was a family pet and while I was part of the family (obviously), I don't actually feel I have any experience caring for a dalmatian. The woman says the dog loves children and cats, but is currently afraid of other dogs, because of the terrier. I understand this, and I do remember our family pet being very skittish and needing reassurance of how much we loved her so she would trust us.

My best friend owns a shitzsu (?) and I would love to be able to go for walks and out for meals with her and her dog...would that ever be possible do you think? can you rebuild love for other dogs in a dalmatian, or at least one other dog? A dog taht looks pretty much identical to our fuzzy cat actually?

Also, the dog loves cats, but our cat has never seen a dog, as she is a housecat and only 9 months old. Does anyone have any ideas on the best way to introduce the two? I am most worried about the cat freaking out and being very unhappy.

Thank You!

New To The Group

First of all, Hello!

My name is Wayah and I am a BRAND NEW Dalmatian owner.

His name isSampson ans is 9 weeks old. And, as you can see he is a brown spotted dal. I got him because he was a bit different than the others and now I need some sage advice.

I love my puppy and I pay attention to him but there seems to be a few issues. When I try to put him into his cage for bedtime at night he goes BALLISTIC and starts a never ending series of high pitched barks. now, when he does then I usually take him out of his cage and bring him to bed with me and he stays asleep all night long until he wakes up around 8:30. Is there a way to get him used to the cage? I live in a large apartment but I am sure my neighbors do not want to listen to him bark, not only that but if I leave I want to make sure he will be safe and won;t be roaming around the apartment while I am gone.

The other problem I am having is that he seems to constantly whine, happy, sad, playing, he always whines... is this normal?

Next, what is the best way to potty train the dog he seems to go to the bathroom while I am walking him, only to come home and he pees on the carpet them minute we return.

HELP before my boyfriend tells me to get rid of him.

Wayah

Hey all!

Here's a recent photo of Gemma. Her leg (which some of you may recall she broke some months back) is never going to be the same...she sits on the side of her hip now instead of her bottom, which is obviously uncomfortable as she doesn't sit for long. She limps when she's been lying curled up for too long, like it gets stiff. But she's pretty much as active as ever and loves barrelling down the beach after seagulls, and chasing my kids on their bikes! She's lost most of the weight she gained when she was inactive, but we'll always have to watch her intake and keep her exercise up so she doesn't get fat again. She's still a nutjob, and lives for food, and walkies with her favourite person, my husband. She's a Daddy's girl, lol.
