Lamp shades can make a big difference. A lamp with a light colored shade, especially one that’s lined in white, will give the best light. Tall, narrow shades or short, dark-colored shades let less light through. You’ll probably need to turn on another light to see properly, which means you’ll use more electricity.

And don't forget your energy efficient bulbs! I prefer to buy lampshades that will soften the light and hide direct view of those bulbs, and then I buy the lowest wattage ones that I can get my hand on (hey, I don't like it too bright!).

I also don't usually use a light unless I am reading or cooking (or eating). Otherwise I lay out my clothes for the next day while it is still light out, and I simply navigate in the dark. There is usually enough light from outside that I can get by without a problem, and since my wife and Ioften work different schedules, I am not waking her up when I get dressed in the morning.
