American Apparel immediately comes to mind. Most of the Threadless tees are of the American Apparel line.

Also put CoOpAmerica.org on your bookmarks because they have lots of guides to ethical shopping. :)

there is controversy over American Apparel being equal to sweatshops in many ways though. I try to stay away from it whenever possible.

I would look through http://nosweatapparel.com/ for some starter brands at least

I'd like to disagree with the American Apparel comment. It's constantly being randomly inspected and they have excellent benefits for their employees. They have an excellent reputation and even a really long waiting list for employment.

my favorite site is http://thegreenloop.com

It has several different brands, and the clothing is also eco-friendly. I tend to hate the way sweatshop free clothing looks (i'm a fan of fashion) and I think this site has many different styles.

Also, a brand found in stores that is supposedly sweatshop free, that I LOOOVE: Betsey Johnson!! Her dresses & shoes are gorgeous and she's a strong advocate of sweatshop free clothing.

I feel too uncomfortable about American Apparel to shop there. I'm not saying they are a sweat shop, but sexual harassment is notorious with the company, enough that even SNL has done a sketch about it:

http://jezebel.com/5052969/american-apparels-dov-charney-explains-it-all-for-you-on-snl

On one hand you have a guy and company who are doing a lot, promoting legalizing immigrants, supplying well paying jobs/healthcare/free english classes for spanish speaking employees, and bringing attention to non-sweatshop goods.

On the other hand the director is a a pretty sleazy character. He has numerous sexual harassment cases against him from former employees, and I heard at a labor conference that since the job pays well, and some of the women are spanish speaking only and can't find a job with better benefits, they sit and bear the harassment. The company has also had cases against them for being anti-union and kicking union people off their property.

Here is a labor blog dicussing the pros and cons of the company:

and a businessweek article detailing about some of oversexualized conditions at the factory:
