apartment composting?
My roommate and I produce a fair amount of produce scraps, and I'd love to have a compost bin. We do have a little bit of space outside in the shade where I could put a small container, but it would have to be closer to 5 gal bucket than garbage can size, and not smell or attract too many bugs because people would be walking right by it on a regular basis. Has anyone tried this on a small scale? How practical is it? Any suggestions for containers? I'm in California so we have a mild climate and I'm sure I could find someone to occasionally take the completed compost for use in a garden.

Google "vermicomposting"--worms are your friends :) You can easily have a vermicomposting setup with a couple of 5-10 gallon Rubbermaid containers.

I've got a bit of space but not enough for a huge composter, and I've been thinking of trying out bokashi. Apparently, you can also compost meat scraps and whatnot with this method, which generally seems to require a few handfuls of a microbial bran for each 3-4 cm of food waste.

Proponents say there's no smell as with composting, because bokashi "pickles" the scraps and ferments them instead of rotting them! I live in Vancouver -- also a pretty mild climate -- and I'm totally gonna try this out once I find some suitable containers. *g*

I'd check out the book "Worms Eat My Garbage": http://www.wormwoman.com/acatalog/Wormwoman_catalog_Worms_Eat_My_Garbage_3.html She answers many questions about verimcomposting. I did it for a while inside, but then overloaded my worm bin with citrus, which caused some smellyness.

Another vote for worms. I started a worm bin a few months back. It's not even as big as a 5 gallon Rubbermaid, but it's going really well so far & there is no smell whatsoever.

I have an underbed storage bin with lots of holes drilled in it, torn newspaper, and about a pound of worms. Works fine for me. I keep it in one of my bottom cabinets.

I've recently got interested in bokashi, which looks pretty cool, too.
