Recycle Lamps & Lightbulbs Properly To Avoid Mercury Pollution
Last month, the EPA estimated the savings from the benefits of mercury reduction at $50 million per year, as compared to the cost to coal plants (the source of 40% of mercury pollution) at $750 million per year until 2020. This article now shows evidence from the EPA that if the southeastern United States alone cleans up their mercury, they will save $2 billion (with a B) per year.
As stated last week, the Dems are expected to start introducing legislation along their own agenda. Here is a statement from Russ Feingold (D-WI) highlighting the harmful effects of mercury pollution (also, here's a press release).
A previous post discussed the energy-saving benefits of switching your lightbulbs from incandescent to compact fluorescent lighting (CFLs). If you want to do your part, when you dispose of fluorescent lamps or lightbulbs, dispose of them properly as they contain mercury. This site has some more information about how you can do this in your area.
