Check Your Tire Air Pressure
According to iCARumba, "Under-inflated tires can cost as much as 1 mpg. Better mileage can be achieved by over-inflating the tires (never exceed the maximum inflation pressure on the side of the tire), but the tires will wear faster and the ride will be rougher."

Tires lose 1 psi (pound per square inch) per month or 10 degree temp drop in normal conditions.
Look for the manufacturer’s recommended air pressure on the sticker of your vehicle’s door jamb or owner’s manual.

Check Your Tire Air Pressure

Why? As the pressure in your tires decreases, you lose gas mileage. That's the link here to the liberal agenda, but aside from that, it's safer to make sure your tires have the right air pressure as well. It is recommended to check the air pressure in your tires once a month.

How?
1. Remove tire valve cap
2. Place the end of the tire gauge over valve
3. Press the tire gauge straight and firmly until the scale extends
4. If needed, add air and recheck pressure with the tire gauge
5. Replace valve caps

Information here was taken from TireSafety.com. They offer to let you sign up to receive monthly reminders to check your tires' air pressure. Extra info is available at Road Safety.

To find out more about the progressive agenda in improving energy policy, you can go here. We need to find a renewable form of energy before we run out of oil, and we also need to find a cleaner form of energy to prevent all of the problems that occur with an increasingly dirty environment (increased asthma, skin cancer, etc.).

Checking your tire pressure is a good idea always (I usually fail to do it as well) but I like how you tie it in to conservation of energy. It may seem like a small thing, but if we all checked our tires and got better gas mileage, it would make a difference. Yay for you!

Hahaha it's like flossing, isn't it. And then you go to the dentist twice a year and lie that you always floss. I need to rotate my tires and get the oil changed as well. I just can't stand going out in the cold to deal with car-related things. LOL - there's a catch-22 for you! Go out in the cold to take action towards preventing global warming, or be lazy and after global warming really kicks in it won't be cold but it will be too late.

Don't forget to check your air filter!! And read the new Mike Crichton book.. um... what the hell is it called? bah, I can't remember, but Dh says it's good and along the lines of Global Warming and such.

No!!! Don't read that Crichton book. He's a tool of the right wing! They just had him testify in front of Congress about global warming as the lead "science" witness called by the Republicans... the same Republicans who want to convince us that global warming doesn't exist and we shouldn't do anything about it.

That's... odd. He's always seemed liberal to me; at least the themes of his books have seemed so. Wow.

How do you get around then? I used to live in Northern Virginia (I worked on K Street in DC) and I had no car because I couldn't afford one. It was really, really difficult. I lived in a poor area and the grocery stores were terrible - the food you bought there rotted right after you bought it, if it hadn't rotted already. Once I tried taking a bus to Trader Joe's and I bought some salmon. By the time the bus came to take me back home, my salmon had defrosted. I ended up rather depressed and malnourished because getting around was so hard (and my job sucked).

In short? I incorporate a lot of walking, bussing, and taking rides from friends when possible. Unfortunately for me, this area is really poor too, and bus service has been cut drastically over the past years, which definitely complicates things.

I lost my job at the end of this summer, and was rejected for two jobs I interviewed for after that simply because I didn't have a car. I had a job for a few weeks this winter, but was fired after they realized I was taking the bus to work because I didn't own my own vehicle. Currently, I'm working at a Gelaterie in the downtown area of where I live, and the place I'm moving to in about 10 days is about a mile away from my job, so I'm planning on biking everyday. It's kind of inconvenient, but I feel better about the whole situation when I imagine how much I'm saving on insurance, gas, and maintenance.

Wow - that sounds a lot like my situation in DC. I could've moved into DC and saved money on transportation but spend more on rent. Or I could have moved further out in Virginia, but after you factor in the extra transportation costs with the cheaper rent, it was a wash.

Probably this goes without saying, but if you notice a tire is consistently losing more psi than the others, take it in to get the leak patched, nail removed, or whatever the cause. It's not really expensive, and might even be free if your tires are under warranty.

BTW Orange & Kitty, I'm from DC too (live in MD, work in DC). But I'm near metro, so I don't drive in. Thank God.

Nice, MD, the liberal side :)

I lived on Columbia Pike, if you know where that is. A mile and a half from the Pentagon and the Pentagon City metro stops. My apartments always had shuttles, but my second apartment shuttle driver was mean. He made me late to work all the time.

Then I moved out to Annandale, which totally ruled because I just carpooled with a friend. We took public trans a few times from there and that SUCKED.

A lot of my friends keep telling me to move to VA, but I'm a native Marylander, and the thought is oddly troubling on a subconcious level I can't really explain. It works both ways - native Virginians would never contemplate moving to MD. Oh, and not only am I on the liberal side, but I'm actually a resident of that nefarious hotbed of liberalism, the nuclear-free, business-chain free, vegan-friendly People's Republic of Takoma Park.

My Dad is a mechanic so I had that taught to me when I first started driving. I do a visual check to make sure none look low and do reading with my gauge about every 3-5 weeks. Keeping your car tuned up helps a lot too, I drive a 2001 Echo and usually get about 38-41mpg. I let my tune up go past due and it dropped down to 34mpg, as soon as I got the tune up back to the upper 30's.

What should we do if we have a "little thing" to recommend for the community? I know it's only supposed to be one a day, but I'm sure we all have great ideas.

Sure - go ahead and add it! Try to give some context, any factual information, and a link where people can go if they want to learn more or get more involved.
