Just installed a new plug-in to send these blog entries to the Dadaville LJ community. So if you’re reading this at likelystories.com, ignore this.

If you’re reading this from LJ, whoo hoo, it worked!

UPDATE: And it worked. Now, all I wonder is how things will look when we update the comic.

Heroes Con 2008 [Jun. 19th, 2008|11:34 pm]

victor_von
Whew. Well, I hardly feel ready for another trip, but I'll be in Charlotte, NC this weekend. Like, tomorrow. Tell your friends, tell your mothers! Heroes Con is here! We'll be in Indy Island, sharing a table with the inestimable Brooke Spalding and Ursula Vernon.

We do have Vol. 2 for sale-- we sold about halfway through the initial printing* at MoCCA, and we'll be bringing the remainder to Heroes.

Also: did everyone see The Onion's review of Ursula's new children's book, Nurk? Somebody in the world of fake news likes her.

Complete with a nifty introduction by Paul Gilligan of Pooch Cafe!

Lord willing and the creek don't rise (engulfing the UPS truck) we should have copies available for sale at MoCCA!

Here's a little teaser to tide you over. A picture of the cover!

This little thumbnail doesn't do it justice. Wait till you see it in it's full glory!

air time [May. 8th, 2008|10:34 pm]

m_monique
well, we did it. [info]ursulav, [info]mckenzee, and i did the WUNC/TSOT interview today and i think things went alright. we were all pretty nervous and goofy in the waiting area, gettin' out all the giggling and swearing ahead of time. we also got to chat with the guest ahead of us, a lovely author named dawn shamp, and her husband. the folks running the show could not have been more pleasant, and of course frank stasio is the coolest host ever. really a very nice guy and clearly a pro with serious interviewing skills. it all went by in a blur, predictably. to be honest, i haven't had the guts to listen to the podcast yet. but i remember noting with interest how you forget you're "on the radio" rather quickly and it turns into just a few people sitting around a table chatting. then you see all the technicians staring at you through the window like a fishbowl and it gets weird again.

anyway, a really great experience and i'm very grateful to have had the opportunity. hope i represented the clatch and my dada compatriots well. :-)

dirkdada

I've gotten behind yet again in posting update announcements to LJ. (I'm really hoping to have this automated when the new website goes live.) But whether we announce it or not, we're still updating the comic!

Strip 169 - Debt Evasion
Strip 170 - Pawning a Ring
Strip 171 - A Misunderstanding
Strip 172 - The One Thing You Can Trust
Strip 173 - A Ring of Truth
Strip 174 - The New Act

There we go. All caught up. Hope you're still enjoying our special little Monique chapter.

[DD #166] - Nostalgia [Feb. 26th, 2008|10:27 am]

dirkdada
Kasper reminisces while the band plays on.

NOTE: If you're wondering, Veronique Diabolique is playing a goth punk version of Rififi! from the movie of the same name. It's a wonderful French crime noir and you should see it. Seriously. But if you haven't here's the song:

Sadly, a goth punk version of Rififi! does not actually exist. Matt and I totally made it up.

But if it did exist, Veronique Diabolique would be the band to sing it. (Hint hint, Didier!)

WTH Con 2008 - Con Report!!! [Feb. 13th, 2008|01:11 pm]

dirkdada
What I learned at What the Hell?! Con 2008:
  • If you want a convention done right, get a girl in pirate pants to do it.
  • Some people know so much about Star Wars they can identify by name limited run pez dispensers with the heads of obscure aliens who appeared in one shot in one of the movies. (Original trilogy.)
  • The Hatfields and the McCoys ain’t got nuthin’ on Jennie Breeden and the Gravy Boys.
  • If you want to make a living in webcomics, cultivate a taste for starvation.
  • If someone asks me to sign their bra . . . I will do it.
  • There is a very good argument for a guy to consider getting into cosplay.
  • [info]mckenzee is mostly harmless, despite giving [info]ursulava brain hemorrhage.
  • The day after having a brain hemorrhage, Ursula turns into a perky goth.
  • Giving all the artists in artist’s alley rubber bouncy balls = Bad Idea.
  • Cabbits can be territorial.
  • Should you ever see Giant Blind Moth Girl fighting Fifty Foot Tall Irradiated Prom Date, leave downtown immediately, but place all your bets on Moth Girl.
  • No matter how many times you’re published, it’s still nice to see yourself in print.
  • If you’re going to sell yourself on the auction block for charity. . . you might as well swing dance while you’re doing it. It really ups your market value.

Thanks to

[info]arienna for swinging with me. Thanks to [info]jamiecotc for letting me know there may be a worse movie out there than Space Mutiny. We shall see, Jamie. We shall see. Finally, thanks to all the folks I totally stole pics from because I was lazy and forgot to bring a camera. I love you all!

[DD #165] - Absent Apologies [Feb. 11th, 2008|10:45 am]

dirkdada
If I didn't know better, I'd swear Monique and Kasper Ferrari had a history.

The Dada Detective crew is back from WTH! Con 2008 and we are well and sincerely pooped. But happy. As always, it was good peeps, good times, and good geekery.

Con reports incoming in the next couple days.

[DD #164] - Repartee [Feb. 5th, 2008|09:00 am]

dirkdada
The thing I like best about old detective films and novels isn't the gunplay or the fisticuffs. It's the verbal jousting

Talking is the gumshoe's most dangerous weapon. You rarely see Sam Spade or Philp Marlowe wield a gun. They don't need to. They can turn an entire room of thugs against each other with a few clever turns of phrase.

That's the main reason why I'll always take Spade or Marlowe over Mike Hammer any day of the week. Mike usually lets his gun do his talking for him. And well, a gun only says one thing. Gets kinda boring after awhile.

[DD #163] - A New Old Face [Jan. 28th, 2008|01:45 pm]

dirkdada
It's usually fun introducing a new character in the strip.  But this one is especially fun to bring in. I've always loved the actor we used as a reference. Sydney Greenstreet is only man I know who could still exude gravitas by the bucketful while wearing a fez.

[DD #162] - A very good table indeed . . . [Jan. 22nd, 2008|02:29 pm]

dirkdada
Read the strip . . . then come back and read the rest.

If you're wondering, the name of the band on the stage is Veronique Diabolique, and they are singing a song about Jacques Derrida, the father of post-modernist deconstruction. Yes, they are a real band. And yes, it is a real song.

It is, in fact, quite catchy.

When we saw VD in concert, we knew they had to show up in the Blue Swan Dive when we got to it in the story. Now, lo and behold, two years later, we are finally here!

Apologies for the late strip. Steph worked extra hard on it and it took a little more time than usual. Personally, I think
it was worth the wait. Besides, if we're going to get confessional, lets be honest with each other. It was a holiday and you only read this strip at work when the boss isn't looking, right? ;-)

See ya next week!

Can I just say that I really like Monique's mime evening wear? Our female lead may be looking more suspicious, but she's looking good while doing it!
