yeah, theyve had this type of thing out for awhile, i think alan alda did a story on it in scientific frontiers, but they were using the brain to fly a jet and steer boats... also some people working on eye tracking for mouse control

i think its going to be awhile until its on par with finger/button speeds tho

While incredibly cool that we can do that, my major problem is that I don't want to have to sit there and fuck with my emotions to do stuff in a video game. The Tech advancment is cool, but I think the designers need to go back and rethink what they are pulling for controls. Emotions just don't seem like a good idea.

Yeah, what, everytime I want to "fire" I have to look at a picture of my ex girlfriend to get angry? That doesn't sound like it's going to work for a game very well.

NOw something that this would be cool for is determing the emotions used during an action. Games like those based in starwars or like fable where your character progresses along lines of good and evil could become very interesting if the game could "read" your mind as you carry out actions. When you slaughtered the temple of evil-doers, were you doing it cause they were evil and you wanted to rid the world of them. Or because you wanted there loot and a new hang out for you game. This could also be used to "color" ingame actions. Are you calm and collected? Then your character will move with smooth grace and skill, angry? Get ready to see so serious smashing and bashing with flames leaping form your eyes. It has applications, but as a control scheme, I just don't see it working.

my thoughts exactly. It could do a lot to add substance to a plotline, but the title was seriously misleading in that this technology could control a game like a joystick.

And what happens if you are a depressed emo goth kid? It would suck if you had a really bad day at work and, because of that, your guy just kept running to the right.

Brain Mapping

One area that is developing every day is medicine. Brain mapping is becoming more and more sophisticated. Not only are researchers narrowing down specific areas of the brain that do specfic tasks bu they're also identifying teh bio-chemistry o fthe brain as well.

NPR: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=6145629

Transcranial magnetic stimulation is an area of brain mapping that also allows scientists to stimulate areas of the brain inducing spontaneous 'feeling' or(I believe) sensations. Can't find a decent site on it but I've Wiki'd it...

Wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transcranial_magnetic_stimulation

So on the day they find out how to reprogram us they'll almost certainly have the knowledge to make mentally controlled games.

Happy gaming:)

Controlling games with facial expressions? As if we gamers aren't already portrayed as freaks and spastics :p

This is the worst video-game gimmick since scratch 'n sniff.
