You know, as much as I love Fallout and SS2, neither one is, well, cyberpunk.

i always thought of fallout to be both post-apocalyptic and cyberpunk, since it was fairly technologically advanced for a post-apocalyptic setting.

He's unfamiliar with a lot of things. "Harley Ellison"? Bloody hell. The review of I Have No Mouth... also says "The plot revolves around the usual rogue AI theme...", when the Ellison short story was from 1966.

It's an interesting list, but I wouldn't call it journalism, or particularly noteworthy. It's a guy with some opinions, and you may have noticed there's quite a few of those on the internet.

Maybe I'm missing something here, but how is SS2 not cyberpunk? Hell, SS1 is so obviously inspired by Neuromancer and SS2 is carrying on the storyline. Rogue AIs, hacking, implants... what more do you want?

But no Bladerunner or Uplink? What was he thinking?

I always thought an intergral part of cyberpunk was the depiction of individuals isolated from society or opposing it, where that society dominated/controlled/heavily influenced by a government/corporation/whatever.

I do not think the character in SS2 stands in opposition to society, he is isolated, but thats beacause everyone dies.

I dunno, Im not really claiming to be a expert by any means.

SS1 would have matched that, what with being a hacker enslaved by the company.

Alas, I have not yet had the pleasure of SS1.

yea, if i was gunna say any FF game was cyberpunk i'd agree. The first town (midgar or something?) was practically straight out a gibson novel.

the thing that disappoints me is how dated all of these games are..

it would be great if a company developed some excessively cyberpunk-esque game with up-to-date tech and so on...

of course someone will say this same thing 10 years from now... ;)

Played about half of those, I think. "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" was weird and not at all enjoyable. I still have the 3D mousemat that came with it, tho.

You can see a shifting sensibility in games developers, back in the mid to late 90s, cyberpunk was a huge influence on game designers because so many of them came from hacking backgrounds, as really they were all backyard programmers without major corporate sponsorship. Now, with the likes of Electronic Arts and Microsoft, we're seeing a shift away from that cyberpunk ideal and towards the opposite, where the player character works for the machine, or the government, or whatever.

I think the only game with real cyberpunk credentials released in the last few years is Deus Ex Invisible War, but even that is dated. The creators of System Shock are putting out a spiritual sequel called Bioshock, so hopefully that will be cool.
