Drilling for Natural Gas at Squire Valleevue Farm

Hey guys-- it appears that someone is attempting to drill for natural gas at the farm. Whats worse is that they are trying to sneak it under the radar leaving the farm committee out of the decision process. We are trying to get alumni and current students to write the university and ask to make the process public (or even state that they are opposed to the drilling). This is a space which is supposed (as expressed by the wishes in the will giving it to the university) to be available to alums, current students, and faculty for educational and recreational uses.
Here is a letter drafted by the Biology department graduate students which details a bit more about the issue:

It has come to our attention that consideration is being given to drilling for natural gas and oil at the University Squire Valleevue Farm. We are concerned about the potentially negative effects this could have on the ecology and natural beauty of this valuable University resource.

We, the members of the graduate student body of the Department of Biology, would like to express our strong opposition to any proposed project to drill gas wells at Squire Valleevue Farm. We strongly advise against these activities for the following two reasons:

(1) We are concerned about the direct and indirect impacts drilling and subsequent operations would have on the University Farm’s ecosystems and the research conducted in these ecosystems.

The University Squire Valleevue Farm contains ecosystems ranging from freshwater ponds and streams to temperate deciduous forest, including one of the few remaining examples of old growth beech-maple forest. These ecosystems provide sites for diverse research projects, including studies of beech and sugar maple recruitment as well as forest demography conducted by Dr. Paul Drewa and his graduate students. The University Squire Valleevue Farm attracts these research endeavors because of its relatively pristine condition. Gas well drilling would likely diminish the suitability of the University Farm for studying terrestrial and aquatic systems.

(2) We are also concerned that such activities are against the wish expressed in Mr. Squire’s will that the land be dedicated to the use of teachers and students for learning about nature and obtaining rest and recreation.

Currently, several biology classes - Principles of Ecology Laboratory (BIOL 351L/451L), Genes and Evolution (BIOL 214), and Aquatic Ecology Laboratory (BIOL 339) - are conducted solely, or in part, at the University Squire Valleevue Farm. Further, numerous student groups, such as the Biology graduate students, the Cross Country team, and the Residence Hall Association, use the farm for various athletic and recreational activities. Oil and gas wells as well as the necessary large storage tanks and access roads will directly and indirectly impinge on the academic, athletic, and recreational activities that take place at the Farm.

We request that, if this issue is to be further considered, it be explored in open forums with the University community and that recommendations be sought by the University Farm Committee, the Faculty Senate, the Graduate Student Senate, and the Undergraduate Student Government.

Creepy guy in Thwing and how to handle it?

Had an incident in Thwing yesterday that wasn’t horrible, but it was definitely uncomfortable and very WTF?-inducing. I’m wondering if anything like this has happened to any of you and how you handled it.

I went to Thwing to prepare for a Sociology mid-term today – specifically, to listen back to and take notes on a tape of the review we did in class – and sat at a fairly remote table. It’s the one in the lounge, right next to a faux fireplace with a mock-up of Edward Hopper’s "Nighthawks at the Diner," but with celebrities and neon lights. VERY tacky, but I digress...

So I’m sitting in this remote corner with my back to the window and a few minutes into my lecture tape, some guy I’ve never seen before comes up to the table I’m sitting at and starts unpacking his bag, putting items on the table that include one of those yellow stress balls you squeeze to relieve tension.

Now, something you have to understand here – except for this guy, I’m all alone in this area. I can see empty seats behind this guy and I know for a fact there were at least two other empty tables in the lounge just around the corner because I passed them to get to the remote one. Plus it’s a tiny table – it has four chairs around it, but if four people sat there they’d bump elbows.

And this guy is unpacking his bag to sit across this tiny table in a largely vacant area with me and he’s yet to speak or even look at me.

I’m looking at him, wondering if I have a class with him but I just don’t recognize him. He sits down and has still not said a word to me or even looked in my direction – it’s as if I’m invisible. And I’m less then three feet from him.

Not sure what else to do, I say, "Hi."

He looks up as if he’s noticing me for the first time, says "Hi," and goes back to his homework and stress ball.

Another awkward (for me) few minutes go by and I’m getting slightly more creeped-out, especially as he’s squeezing his yellow stress ball. I finally get up the nerve to speak again.

"Are you comfortable with me here?" I hate asking leading rather then direct questions, but did I mention I was uncomfortable?

He takes out his neon-green ear buds and he says, "Oh, I’m fine with you here."

"Uh-huh," I say. WOW, is this guy clueless.

"Oh, are you okay with me sitting here?" NOW he asks me.

"Not really."

He says something else I can’t quite recall, and I just turn my eyes back to my notebook and say, "No, it’s just...kinda creepy."

I keep my eyes on my notebook as I listen to and take notes from my lecture tape. I’m not looking at him, so I’ve no idea if he’s still squeezing his ball, but I can hear him huffing and puffing (he must’ve been loud as I had my headphones on) as if he's frustrated with something. This just adds to the weirdness of the situation, but something tells me to stay put. He leaves after about 20 or 25 minutes and I breathe a sigh of relief.

My mind was still bothered by the situation a few hours later – not just by his behavior, but by mine – so when I saw my personal Jiminy Cricket (aka my husband, George*) later that night, I talked with him about it.

I told him the whole story and he asked some thoughtful questions, like what the guy looked like (the guy looked like a typical student but George wondered if he were a homeless guy trying to get close to my bag – I overheard a conversation in Thwing this same day regarding stolen items from the building). He was especially interested in the squeezed stress ball and the noises the guy was making. Hubby recons the guy was being passive-aggressive and wanted me to move but I didn’t, which probably pissed him off. That thought crossed my mind – for all I know, this guy sits in that very same spot every day and I was in "his" chair.

But besides this guy’s behavior, I was concerned about mine. I came out and told a complete stranger he was behaving in a "creepy" manner. I don’t enjoy saying unkind things to people – I’m a huge fan of politeness and would never want to hurt someone’s feelings, whether I knew them or not. But something was just so WRONG about this situation – I didn’t feel my security was in peril or some such thing, but it just felt so very WRONG I had to say something. Had there been no other seats available and/or he asked if he could join me, I would’ve been totally fine. But this?

It’s like going to an almost empty movie theatre and someone sits down right in front of you. Or riding a largely vacant bus and someone takes the seat right next to you. Or (I’m told) using a urinal and some guy uses the one RIGHT next to you rather then leaving a space between the two of you. As he had so many options and instead chose to sit that close to a complete stranger (without saying a word until I spoke to him) AND continue to do so even after being told his behavior was "creepy," his behavior felt very off-putting to me.

Other then using a different word then "creepy" when speaking to him, how would you have handled it? Would you have said something or just moved? One friend of mine saays he would’ve said, "Dude, what the fuck" and told him to move, and another said he would’ve lit one of his cigarettes and blown smoke in the guy’s face until he moved. I don’t like being so harsh with others, but to quote "Dirty Dancing," "This is MY space, that is YOUR space."

*At the end of the conversation, I reminded George he’s my "personal Jiminy Cricket," so he starts singing in a tiny voice, "You should’ve whacked him in the balls, in the balls, in the balls..."

The new and improved Silver Spartan

Short version – It’s safe to visit The Silver Spartan again.

Two weeks ago, I though I’d take a chance and order breakfast from The Silver Spartan. I say "take a chance" because the overall quality of the place took a nosedive after Chuck left (*SNIFF*) and I haven’t set foot in the place for a couple of months. But I was a bit desperate – plenty of cash on me but no milk or eggs at my place. When I phoned in an order for the “Twilight Zone,” I was told that was no longer available as the place was under new management! The gentleman on the other end was kind enough to rattle of the specials they did have and I ordered the one most-like TZ, noticing it was a dollar cheaper then the original.

I go to pick up my breakfast order on the way to work and the first thing I noticed about the diner was how much brighter it seemed (I’d find out why later that day - see below). I also noticed the jukebox was missing, probably a good thing as it was broken the last time I was in there. I chatted with the guys behind the counter while I waited for my order and found out the place had been under new management for three weeks (five as of this writing). I asked if they had any new menus printed up I could take to the law school library and they said they were still settling on things, but planned to have one before the freshmen came in. So I paid for my non-rancid coffee (20 oz for $1.00) and my TZ-like meal ($4.50, IIRC) and headed off for work. When my husband called me an hour later, I told him about the experience and now he wants to check it out.

George orders lunch and dines-in, so he talks with the staff more in-depth than I did. It seems they’re putting in some serious effort to turn the Spartan around. To begin with, they spent THREE DAYS scrubbing every surface in the restaurant, which would explain why it looked so much brighter than how I remembered it. And they told George that they lowered prices (hurray!!) to something more reasonable for college students. For some reason, the previous management tried to compete with "That Place," the up-scale restaurant right next door to them. Both George and the employee he was speaking with (sorry, didn’t get a name) thought this was rock stupid as these two restaurants cater to very different clientele with very different levels of "disposable income." And if they were going to "compete" with the swankier restaurant next door, it would’ve been swell if little things, such as the service and the quality of the coffee, were up to snuff.

Last week, I ordered lunch to go. I thought I’d try a fish sandwich with a side order of fries. While waiting for my order, I chatted a bit with an employee and ask about the menu and their fall hours. They still hadn’t settled on one, but they did show me a rough draft while I waited for my food. They seemed to have a decent variety of appetizers (I certainly must try the sampler basket) and I noticed the side salad was a full dollar cheaper then it was under the previous regime. I asked how late they’d be open and was told they’d try out 2:00am and see how many people actually showed up. Then my food came. WOW. You know how the fish sandwiches at Wackadoo’s are insanely large? Imagine one of those on a toasted bun. I ended up cutting off a piece that would fit on the bun, put the rest in the staff refrigerator at work and had the leftovers for dinner when I got home. And the French fries…mmm. Imagine McDonald’s French fries but nowhere near as greasy or salty. All this came to (I think) $6.50ish.

So, I’m going to keep giving the new and improved Silver Spartan my patronage. The acid test will come when fall semester begins and they have tons more people to serve, by which point they said they’ll have plenty of paper menus customers can take with them.

CWRU libaray open on Sundays

Greetings.

I just found out today that my library, the Judge Ben C. Green Law Library in Gund Hall, is apparently the only one on campus that is open on Sundays. I found this out shortly after getting off the phone with a woman asking if her hubby could use the place to prep for the medical boards as the medical libraries were closed.

SO, if you need a quiet and comfy place to study on Sundays between the hours of 10:00am and 6:00pm, come by Gund Hall (the "normal-looking" three story brick building behind Peter B. Lewis). We have just a few rules.

1. NO food is allowed. If you want to sneak an occasional M&M, that's one thing but we've had to talk to people who smuggled in pizza slices, sub sandwiches and quart containers of Chinese noodles. Let's not encourage the cockroaches, mkay?

2. Drinks are cool so long as they're in something as spill-proof as possible, such as a water bottle or a reusable travel mug. The disposable cups from Starbucks and Arabica don't count as the lids will pop off if tipped over (trust me - it's happened and we don't want the furniture or the books ruined).

3. Avoid using cell phones, especially on the third floor. We're open all week and some nights as late as 8:00 because the law students are studying for the bar exam. You REALLY do NOT want to chat away anywhere near a stressed-out someone trying to review their Constitutional Law notes.

If you don't need the quiet of the library but would like access to snacks, you might want to set up shop in Blackacre, the student lounge with comfy chairs and vending machines.

To enter, come in the East Blvd doors (ring the red button on the door if it's locked) and go up one floor and sign in. There you'll find the lovely and talented circulation staffers who can help you with any questions you may have.

Have a good summer!

Case has done some crazy stuff, but this definitely one of the craziest I've heard about:

Case Western Reserve didn't tell anyone about a private meeting it was holding last Thursday, but somehow word leaked out. When a human resources officer called the meeting to order, he found himself facing a roomful of athletic staff. They didn't look happy. No, they definitely did not.

The staff had just found out that track coach Dennis Harris, a 24-year veteran, was being fired. It went down as well as an overcooked steak.

link

Anderson as its next president, effective August 1. I am pleased to recognize an achievement of a member of our leadership team to this prestigious position, and I offer him my congratulations.

I am grateful to John for his dedication to Case Western Reserve University over the past three years. His attention to and support of our undergraduate programs has helped us to set record numbers in applications and to increase our incoming class size substantially. He also has infused new energy into campus life initiatives and student activities.

In addition, John has advanced the university with his investment in and recognition of our faculty and their work, particularly his creation of the Research Council, which stimulates discovery and creative endeavors, especially those that are interdisciplinary, and improves communication among faculty and senior administrators.

I have been in touch with Barbara Snyder, and she and I will work together to plan for the transition and, eventually, to prepare to fill the position of provost and university vice president.

Please join me in wishing John the best in his new endeavor. We will miss his friendship as well as his leadership.

Sincerely,

Gregory L. Eastwood, M.D.
Interim President

Do NOT park in the lot at the corner of Euclid Ave. and Ford.

For those of you who have to drive to CWRU tomorrow (yes, I checked the main page - we're open), do NOT attempt to park in the lot at the corner of Euclid Ave and Ford. It's completely snowed in - not even the little driveways leading into it have been plowed, so unless the temp drop a LOT within the next ten hours to melt a lot of the white stuff away, you're going to have a hell of a time getting in and, if you do, good luck getting out. You see, the owners of the lot do not HAVE the plowing equipment one would assume a company that owns a parking lot OUGHT to have. Let me explain...

I made about five phone calls today to see about getting it plowed because hubby had to park there after work (getting down Hessler was impossible) and he needed two guys pushing on our little Toyota to get situated AND may have done damage to the car engine in the process.

My many phone calls today taught me the lot is NOT owned by CWRU nor by UCI, but by a company called "Standard Parking" and that their phone number is 216-844-1226. The gentleman I spoke to at that number radioed his supervisor (I could hear them over the phone) and he was told that they simply do not own any snow removal equipment, which seems pretty odd since A). they own a parking lot and B). said lot is in CLEVELAND, where we have SNOW!

So please warn your friends NOT to park in that lot as the company who owns it is physically incapable of making it drivable.

CE Class/Faculty Propsective Recommendations

I have a high school-aged cousin coming up to visit the school tomorrow (Friday the 19th), specifically with an interest in Computer Engineering. Personally I'm a EE, bit while I'm in the same department, my experience has tended more towards volts that wiggle than ones and zeroes. Does anyone with more CE experience have suggestions for any classes he might be interested in sitting in on and/or faculty he should meet?
