so, I work at a grocery store, and we sell non-alcoholic beer, because this is PA and we only sell alcohol in state stores and whatnot. ANYWAY, I was ringing this older guy up, and he got non-alcoholic beer, and a thing on my register popped up asking for his birthdate, and once that thing pops up I can't do anything else until I enter a date. so I was like, I need your birthday. and he was like, HOW OLD DO I LOOK! and I was like, obviously older than 21 but I still need to ask, and he gave me his birthday and then the rest of the time he was bitching about he was old enough to buy beer because telling me the date you were born is such hard work. honestly.

Ugh I hate that...it's like "yes I am well aware that you are old enough but NEVERTHELESS we will sit here all day because my computer is not going to make up a birthday for you." I also had a similar issue when I worked at a store that scanned drivers licenses for ID for checks. A lot of people didn't want to have to give ID, or when I asked they'd just say the number off the license or something and I'd have to explain that I physically need the license to scan it...blargh.

Why don't you just make up a birthday? I have to card people all the time when I sell alcohol and cigarettes, and I put in some random age like 05/05/1955 when I KNOW they're definitely old enough.

I make up birthdays all the time as long as I'm certain they are old enough...

And the fun part is- if they are nice to me I make them closer to 21... if they are rude or annoying I make them in their 50's or 60's. They never know, but it makes me feel a little better.

How old does someone need to be to buy non-alcoholic beer?

and secondly, what is the point of buying alcohol free beer? Having tried a few.. it's certainly not for the taste.

21, same as normal beer. Non-alcoholic beer isn't technically non-alcoholic...it's got some ridiculously low percentage of alcohol in it, so they still have to card for it. Found this out one time when I was at Busch Gardens at the free beer place and my brother decided to try an O'Douls and they asked him for ID and he was like "uhhh...for WHAT?" XD

I bet they sell vanilla extract (30% alcohol) without ID.

Not at my local grocery store ... the middle school kids kept drinking it in the aisles and leaving the empty bottles around, so to get it now, you have to go to the customer service desk and request and bottle.

But do you need ID to buy it?

And here I am, reminded of how incredibly teensy-brained middleschoolers can be.
And yeah, lol, vanilla extract as well as other extracts have enough of an alcoholic percentage in them that you'd THINK people would be carded for... I guess the fine line comes between what's meant to be a drink vs. a flavor.
Srsly almost-teenagers, stick to cough syrup and glue. =P

I looked it up and found this:
"If we say six beers at 6.0% alcohol will get you drunk, then it would take you 120 non-alcoholic beers to get drunk.
.3% x20= 6%
6x20= 120 in the same time frame"

Granted it's not alcohol-free, just the same as (if I remember correctly) decaf isn't completely free of caffine, but where I live you buy the NA beer beside the pop and aren't carded for it. :)
Do they also card for mouthwash etc? (not being snarky, I'm just honestly curious)

I work in a DVD shop and I get this ALL the time, what with the DVD ratings. A kid will walk up with 15 rated DVD (I'm in the UK so we've got different ratings here).

Me: How old are you?
Kid: 14.
Me: Well, I'm afraid I can't sell this to you then, as it's a 15.
Kid: But it's not for me, it's for my Dad!
Me:...

Do they expect me to just say: 'Oh well, I didn't realise! Go right ahead, you truthful young man'? Or when they insist that they really are 15, honestly, it was my birthday two weeks ago. 'Happy birthday... I still need ID.'
