Current mood: cold

Dear... Goddess
Okay... do I have "convert me" all over my face or something?

I helped a friend do a volunteer booth thingy today. It's about supporting Student Artists. Works for me, whatever. I was wearing my pentacle (five pointed star, not a satanic symbol you hollywood blowing asshats!) Point Blank. I. Am. Not. A. Paitent. Person! It's also that happy time of the month (or rather getting there :P)

Me: Pagan and Proud of it
ICT: Idiotic Converting Type
F: Friend

F: Hey, (canned phrase he's said 20 times by now)
ICT: Are all student artists not Christian? (noticing my necklace)
F: Um.. I don't know.
Me: I'm not... (deadpanned of course because I KNOW where this is going)
ICT: That's sad. Well, Jesus still loves you.
Me: Yippy... Woohoo... go away... (I'm tired and cranky)
F: (Laughing inside, at least I'm pretty sure he was)
ICT: Let me tell you about the Church retreat we're having this weekend...
Me: I don't want to know... (eyes turning firey red)
ICT: But it will really help you to open your heart to Jesus, our Lord.
Me: Your Lord... not mine, respect my religion I pretend to respect yours...
ICT: Well, you know if you let Jesus into your heart you'll be happier.
Me: (Practically growling)
F: (turns to other student to give canned phrase... snickers, and I heard you do it!)
ICT: I know you'd like our Church.
Me: (That's it...) I'M NOT JOINING YOUR FUCKING CULT! READ THE DAMN CONSTITUTION!!!
(Everyone in the IMU (Iowa Memorial Union) turns to look)
ICT: Excuse me, Christianity is not a cult! (Looks miffed... nothing compared to me)
Me: IF YOU HAVE TO TRY AND FORCE PEOPLE TO JOIN A RELIGION IT'S A FUCKING CULT! GO PRAY FOR A FUCKING BRAIN AND QUIT WASTING MY TIME!!!!!! (breathing hard, attempting to reach calm).
ICT: FINE! It's not my fault if you go to hell... (storms off)
Me: (reverting back from demon form)
F: (Now very quite, figuring a burst of laughter would earn him decapitation from my pencil)

-----
Seriously! Do people not read their own national constitution. It's bad enough I get it on the bus, and classes, and home... I don't need it when I'm giving my own time to help a cause that affects me :P

Um, technically private individuals can harass and proselytize you until you call the cops on them. The Constitution just forbids gubmint from harassing and proselytizing you.

Ahahahaha!

I want to steal your reaction. As it is, the LDS church in my neighborhood has stopped their solicitation efforts. I'd have ignored them, but I can't see who's knocking on the door without letting them know I'm looking at them.

Visit one: "Hi, we'd like to take a moment to share with you--" SLAM!

They sighed and went away.

Visit two was more entertaining, at least on my end. One of the squeaky-clean virginal boys started talking when I opened the door. I immediately picked one out, the one who wasn't talking, slid my hand up the doorjamb, cocked my hip, half-lidded my eyes, and licked my lips at him. The speaker started to stutter, and both of them got nervous as hell.

So I blew a kiss. They ran for it.

Lest anyone think I'm drop-dead sexy or something, it should be pointed out now that the cause of their discomfort wasn't my painfully irresistible sexuality. It was the fact that I'm a man. >:)

Haven't seen 'em since.

Oh, that's beautiful!

We have a little sign on our door that says "NO soliciting (NO!!! WE MEAN IT!), NO proselytizing (We already found Jesus. He was hiding behind the couch.), NO campaigning (We're voting for Bill & Opus again.) Any questions? Read the doormat." The doormat says "GO AWAY".

The Jesusier Than Thou crowd always tells me I'm being intolerant. Fuck that. If I wanted to know about their religion, I'd ask them. As it is, they keep interrupting my workday with their illiteracy and twaddle.

Variation on a theme (and I'm sure I've told this story here before):

My first lover, after getting home early one morning post-Rocky, answered the door still in his Frank-n-Furter costume.

The JWs were on the downstairs landing before he managed to get the door fully open....

Urgh... Been there myself.
Me. Buddhist. No likey Jesus Fucking Christ.
Where I work there are quite a few bible thumping morons who continually leave little biblical cards and these strange little comic books about finding Jesus and how my sins will be washed away and how I'm going to hell for not joining up and believing crap that my logical brain is screaming "BULLSHIT!" over.
I was raised Buddhist, I am Buddhist, and personally, Buddhism is a lot less bullshit oriented about itself. We don't go out and try to annoy people into converting. We don't sacrafice animals on alters. We don't believe that women are the root of all evil. We don't believe in original sin and having to do all this pentacostal religious bullshit to assuage the guilt you've built up oogling the secrataries ass from your cubicle while downloading gay pr0n and abusing your gerbil.
And another thing: Organized Religions are SCARY. Never heard of a Buddhist starting a Holy War or launching a fucking Jihad, or even the Inquisition. That peacenik Jesus has a lot of sick fucks saying they like doing cruel shit in his name. The only cruel stuff I've seen another Buddhist do is to invite said converters into his home, sit them down and serve them tea. Then talk to them about Buddhism and how peaceful and calming a religion and way of thought it is. and never let em get a word in edgewise. Call it reverse converting.

Anyhoo... time to sacrafice some coffee beans for my morning rush.

My own recent experience is near the bottom of this post:

http://www.livejournal.com/users/lorriejharris/153324.html?nc=10

I always enjoyed using little bits of trivia before the zealots get too obnoxious. ;)

I don't know if it's a "know your enemy" mindset, or just innate curiosity, but I like to know about -all- religions, and it's rather fun when a "heathen" like me can debate circles around them.

Of course, I give credit to my Christian friends, who actually -know- and understand their religion, for educating me. ;)

Christianity has yet to reach taz-emept status, and thus, is not a cult.

you totally flew off the handle. you could've respectifully declined, and told him that as long as you were happy, then it doesn't matter what religion you are.

you started off with an attitude, and I'm sure if said "ICT" had LJ, you'd be going into some sort of "employees suck" community as well.

Anyway, Christianity started as a cult - as most (if not all) religions did.

Meh... Christianity isn't a cult, mormonism is, marching band is, Christianity hasn't quite reached that status yet. However, since I'm not sure what my faith is yet, people are constantly telling me to "go to church with them" and blah blah blah and I can completely understand why it upset you. Religious fanatics are scary.

Why do you think Mormonism is a cult?

I had an experience somewhat similar to that a couple weeks ago. http://www.livejournal.com/users/plasticfucktard/79917.html

I hate it when people act like that. I just want to scream at them, "Stop being on my side! You're making my side look dumb!"

I am a Christian, but I feel that others should believe whatever they want, or not believe at all if they choose. I figure if someone WANTS to know about my religion, they will ASK me, I don't need to ram it down their unwilling throats. I wasn't a big fan of you calling Christianity a cult, but I can understand being snippy with him, given that he was being an asshole and you were stressed. I realize that SOME people do make religion seem like a cult, and it saddens me to know that most of them (or at least the most vocal ones) seem to be from my religion.

Dang straight, not every adherent of a religion is obnoxious. It's the few that make the others look bad. I've had civil, respectful religious discussions with many devout friends and acquaintances, with neither side trying to *prove* anything to the other because faith is belief without proof.

And it follows that *none* of these discussions have occurred with the sorts of people who shove leaflets in my nose or shout on street corners. *shrugs*

Oh, and for the record, I think your response was perfectly normal given the situation and your state of being at the time. PMS is a bitch isn't it? ;)

Sure is :) Yeah, the booth got some positive response, a lot of negative (including this one) People who thought the new art building is wasting their money (and have clearly never been in hte death trap that hte current art building is) and think our major is a waste of time...

And while this university does spend it's money like candy... we do, desperatly, need a new art building. The whole no air conditioning (did you know paint doesn't do well in heat! Nor do paintings) and everything falls apart and leaks thing, is a little irritating... especially when our class room flooded and our art got ruined :(

But in short, people needed to know that yep artists need your support. I made 2 commissions that day (totalling 30 bucks, nothing big...) but it was helpful, and means I may get to have groceries again! :D

As annoying as that is, the Constitution doesn't forbid individuals from doing that. You just have a right not to put up with it.

I usually just walk away and ignore them. They aren't worth the effort. I'll just be like "That's nice...have a nice day...." and humor them a little, cause I was Christian once, and know that when they do that they really do believe they are being good Christians and saving your soul. It's not entirely their fault, it's what they were taught. It's understandable, but like I said extremely irritating. But like I said, we do have a right to walk away and also tell them to mind their own business, which is also what I do when someone asks me if I go to church or what religion I am.

See the problem was I couldn't walk away. I volunteered my time at that booth, and I did in fact wish to be there. Normally I just ignore said person (like on the bus :p) and walk off... I was in rather stuck there (we were against a wall.. and I'm not athletic enough to slide or jump over the table ;)

People need to learn when to back the fuck off. I knew a girl (former best friend, in fact) who converted to Jehovah's Witness-dom. I supported her, because it was what she wanted to do, and I listened to her blather, EVEN though she knew that I was not Christian, very much against ignorant/fundamentalist Christianity, and would never ever convert. She stopped for a while, and then started telling me that she was afraid that she wouldn't see me in heaven because I wasn't a Christian, and that she wanted me to come to church with her so I could see how great it was. I'm not usually *that* offended by preaching, but the last people you preach to on and on is your best friend, who has clearly and repeatedly said NO.

I wear a necklace with a Celtic knot, Claddaugh, metal guitar pick, and a Star of David, and I constantly get people asking me if I'm Jewish/a witch/etc. Since when did a Celtic knot mean Wiccan/Pagan/Satanist/whathaveyou? I happen to be Irish, and so does my boyfriend (he gave it to me), thanks. I wear the Star because I have a lot of Jewish friends, and I wear it out of support.

Yeah... it boogles the mind that people assume things when someone wears them. First, Satanists worship themselves as gods, secondly Satanworshipers use the pentagram incorrectly and generally give those of us who use it correctly a bad name.
A celtic knot can actually be a religious symbol (some were made to represent certain gods/goddesses) and many represented groups of people in that time :)

But it's all done in assumption. I know people who wear crosses that aren't christian and likewise with pentacles. You aren't what you wear ;) (you're what you eat! LOL!) Or like the "Him" band symbol (a heart-a-gram) that's a pentagram turned upside down and shaped more like a heart. (it's not a pagan symbol folks...) :)

But yeah. I'm going to shut up now :)

My husband goes through this a little more than I do, but I have had my share. My dad is muslim, my mom is baptist, and the other half is buddhist. My husband was harassed at work because of some red protection cords that he wears around his neck. Management came down hard on him about the "jewelry" until he quietly pointed out the plethora of crosses, chains, pendants, bracelets, and oversize earrings that they had no problem with, and combined it with the "d" word. Worked like a charm.

After 9/11 my father was harassed because of his religion and as was I when I attempted to disagree that not all muslims should be summarily killed.

I have found however that answering the door to JW's and politely pointing out the no soliciting signs works, as well as the nifty door hanging that reads " Sorry I missed church, I was busy practicing witch craft and becoming a lesbian." The doormat that says "go away!" also is a small hint that you should stay away.

Immediately after 9/11, my children were harrassed by some fundie whack-job. See, my husband is of Syrian descent, and the children have inherited his lovely olive skin and angular nose. This bitch called my boys "sand niggers", and screamed that they were going to hell with all the rest of the "fuckin' towelheads".

"Nice christian lady", that one. Almost got her tongue ripped out for being an ignorant whore. We are not Muslim. We are not christian, either. Hubby studies Shamanism, I study Asatru, the kids haven't yet made up their minds what they're interested in. They know they're not interested in christianity, though, because they've only ever encountered two nice christians in their young lives. The rest have harrassed them over a religion they don't even participate in, simply because of the way they look.

---

You'd think the "Go Away" doormat would serve as small clue, especially in conjunction with the sign on my door, but people still ring my doorbell and want to convert me anyway - apparently, they feel I'm not serious or that they're so special, they're allowed to trespass. I hate having my work day interrupted by such inconsiderate twats. The sign and doormat are there for a reason, dammit.

My answer to this would have been, "And you know, if you just let someone take your head out of your arse, you'd be a lot more able to think!"

I'm amazed you didn't hiss and spit at her. I learned to do that from my cat. Works every time.
