I'm normally a quite cheerful little McD worker. I still remember on my first day back after a week off for Christmas, I was surprisingly perky for 6AM and my first customer was staring at me like I was crazy. lol I also had someone recently ask me why I was so happy and what my secret was (I didn't really know what to tell him. One of my coworkers suggested that the next time I say it's drugs. LOL).
But today, two people managed to piss me right off and just ruin my mood.
The first was barely 15 minutes into the start of my shift at 6AM. I was on window stocking up because no one had really come in yet and I like having everything all tidy. Co-worker P who was in booth had come up front because there weren't any cars. This guy walks in and P goes to take the order since she's there anyway.
He tells her that he wants a meal for the price of one with a coffee but that he wants an orange juice instead. Meals don't work that way. The sandwich and the hashbrown are consistent but you pay for the price of the drink because they're all varying prices. And I'm pretty sure orange juice is the most expensive drink we offer in the mornings.
E.g., I think an Egg/Sausage Egg/Bacon Egg McMuffin meal with a coffee comes out to $3.87, but with an orange juice it'll be $4.20. With apple juice it's $3.99? Hmm, with milk might be the same as OJ - I can't remember - it's either the same or $4.10.
P tells him that she doesn't think we can do that. He proceeds to claim that he's never had a problem doing this "anywhere else".
I really REALLY hate that excuse. All it makes me want to do is tell them to GO somewhere else then because we don't want to get in trouble for doing something we're not supposed to. I'm pretty sure people are lying most of the time when they make this claim.
He continues to ask what else he can get for the price of a meal+coffee. There's pretty much only hot chocolate and tea since they ARE the same price as coffee. He asks about coke and we're both kind of like, "Uh..." because that's also more expensive than coffee.
P looks at me for help and I explain that you pay for the price of drinks with the meals and that we can't give him another drink for the price of coffee. He's all, "FINE FINE, just clear that off and I'll get something else." He tells P that he'll get a #7 sandwich, but mumbles something else after and P mishears him and thinks he wants a coke with it. So she asks him about the drink and he says AGAIN to clear it all off because I think he assumed she hadn't gotten rid of the meal yet. In an attempt to help out, I tell P that he only wants the sandwich...
The guy then goes, "EXCUSE ME, can you just butt out? I'm trying to deal with her." which was basically him telling me to fuck off, though not quite that rude.
He's already been rude throughout the whole thing (his whole attitude was just wrong) so by this point I don't want to deal with him anymore either. I pretty much go, "Okay, fine!" and go off to change the OJ which was empty.
According to P, he told her that I kept on interrupting. How is it interrupting when she kept on looking at me to say something...?
I think he was just pissed at me because I didn't let him get what he wanted.
Anyway, after that lovely start to the morning, in the middle of the lunch rush, I handed this one lady her bag and drink in drive-thru ("Thank you! Have a good day!") and she goes...
Her: I want a straw.
Me: It's in the bag!
Her: I want a straw.
Me: *thinking she didn't hear me?* Oh, it's in the bag!
Her: I want a straw.
Me: Yes, it's-
Her: GIVE ME A STRAW. You need to learn to follow instructions.
Me: ..... *gives her a straw*
She then had the nerve to take the straw out of the wrapper then hold out the wrapper and stare at me, expecting me to throw it away for her. Did she just not want to take the straw out of the bag herself? If she wanted ANOTHER straw, she could have said as much. "Yes, but I want another straw." Is that HARD?
You say you want a straw and technically you HAVE a straw. IT'S IN THE BAG.
And besides, that wasn't an "instruction", that was a DEMAND. :P
I just wanted to go home after. Luckily 2PM wasn't that far off after the lunch rush ends.
What's happened to saying "please"? It's like people think they can be rude to us just because we're fast food workers and it's perfectly acceptable.
But at least I'm reminded of one customer who corrected himself from "Can I" to "May I". He was all apologetic about it. It was a pleasant and unexpected experience. :)
