My customers often annoy me. They often make me mad, and often I think they are idiots.

However, they seldom make me want to physically assault them.

Today, though, I came very close to hitting someone.

I work at a bookstore. I was cashiering today when a woman and her two kids (a boy and a girl, both somewhere between 13-15) came up to the register. The mom was buying 2 celeb gossip magazines, and the boy put down a book. The girl then walked up and set down the newest volume of the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants series.

The mom says "You can't buy that."

Girl: Why?
Mom: Because it's too big.
Girl: [Brother] is buying a book that big. It's not very expensive.
Mom: [Brother] is a boy. You're a girl. And girls shouldn't read big books like that. It's too thick. Boys don't like girls who read thick books. You want boys to like you, don't you?

The girl went and put the book away.

Reading it, this doesn't sound like much. And I suppose it -wasn't- that big of a deal. But I can't express the -tone- this woman used, nor the expression on her daughters face when she went to put the book away. I had to actually walk away from the register, and into the back room to avoid saying something. Still, little or not, it upset me a lot. More than just about anything I've experienced in customer service.

Edited to add:
Yes. I should have said something. I should have. After the fact, I realize this. I should have told the girl...something. Anything. I should have run after her and bought her the book. Hell, I should have given her my library card.

I was, frankly, too shocked and angry. I couldn't come up with anything =to= say. I just couldn't. This is another reason it upset me so much. I have a bloody degree in WOMEN'S STUDIES. I should have been able to stand up for this girl.

Next time. Because I know there'll be a next time.

That sounds just like what my grandmother would say to my mother.

"If you get too smart the boys won't like you."

Thankfully my mother didn't listen.

It is a big deal. She's basically trying to get her daughter to be mindless.

I'd have wanted to hit her too.

Then again the boys worth being liked by are the ones who see the large book reading as a perk.

I knew someone that had actually read the collected, unabridged works of Shakespeare... in fifth grade.

That 'mother' doesn't deserve that title. 'Ignorant bitch' would be much more appropriate. Intelligent, bookworm girls FTW.

That's not minor, it's infuriating.

I think I would've said something. As a guy, "I like girls more if they read a lot," as a girl, "my boyfriend likes that I read a lot" - even if I were a girl without a boyfriend I'd lie about it for the occasion :)

First off, daughter has EXCELLENT taste in reading materials!!

Second, just because her maternal unit (that being does NOT deserve the word 'mother'!!) wants her to be as brainless as possible (less likely to show maternal unit up, ya think?) doesn't mean daughter actually has to listen to her.

tho its hard, most kids DO want to please their parents, even when said parents make it impossible and blame everything that is wrong with *their* lives on their children. Like its the kids faults their birth control failed?

hmm, there was another point but its late and it went curling up with the cats on the bed.

I hope that the daughter was able to come back and get the book on her own or even find it in the local library (heh, my mother used to drop me off at the library when she went shopping, as long as I had books to read, I was a happy camper)

I was so in denial about what actually happened, the first time I read the first paragraph I convinced myself that the boy was picking up a girly book, and we were about to get some ignorant comment about how boys can't read girl books. Which is bad enough.

But, this is so much worse. Can you slip this poor child a library card?

Had I seen/witnessed that, I would've started yelling, probably. "WHAT THE FUCK DID YOU JUST SAY? YOU'RE KIDDING, RIGHT?" (her kids have most likely heard much, much worse) and THEN I would've gone on to publically humiliate her right in the middle of the store by calling attention to what she said.

Well, firstly, this is exactly the kind of sexist behaviour that makes me want to slap people. It's bad enough when I hear it coming from blokes, I never imagined I'd hear sexist comments about women coming from ANOTHER woman!

Secondly, as a bloke I can safely say I don't make judgements about whether I should go out with a girl based on how smart/stupid she is. There are much more important attributes, like personality, and character.

That woman should have been slapped. Repeatedly.

Picture this scenario:

The daughter and son both come home from school, with notices that they failed the school vision test. The mother tells the boy, "We'll take you to get glasses tomorrow, but not Susie. You know what they say.. 'Boys don't make passes at girls who wear glasses!'"

There's still hope for the girl, if she's picking books out anyway. Given a few years, she'll probably be rebelling against her parents by sneaking books into the house and hiding them under her matress.

I hope, anyway.
