yeah.... I can't stop laughing...
So my coworker is going through some old paper files and putting in them in the computer. For the moment, she's going through requests to be withdrawn their membership from our CoOp. She found this one that's almost exactly 20 years old, just a few days off actually. Written exactly how it was received.

Dear ----,
Have post poned writing this for some Time because it really saddens me to do so, but, we will have to withdraw our membership form the ---- CoOp. We can no longer co-operate.
The officers and leadership apparently approve of the immorality of Lesbianism, (because of the add put in the Co-op news letter.) We can not accept this. Actions like this along with the anarchist paper "for social change" (also advertised in the news letter) are Two of the big reasons that this whole nation is Truly being endangered from within. There is no question - They are in complete rebellion against Gods principals and commandments.

We will not be considered a part of it.
Regretfully -
---- & ---- -----

And for the record, no one has any idea of what two ads this person is talking about. Also posted to personal Journal.

...that style of writing (the slightly archaic capitalization and phrasing) is straight from the Victorian era. No joke.

The best bit of this: lesbianism was quite prevelent (and accepted) in Victorian times. Only when it got ided as lesbianism did it become an issue.

What's funny about that? Or Customer's Suck commuity worthy?

Socially accepted or not, lesbianism and homosexuality are still immoral. As is casual sex. Why? Because moral codes were written well before our time. I really don't want to hear from anyone objecting to this, because I really don't care who or what people are into, as long as they don't hurt anyone else in the process.

And what's wrong with objecting to such attitudes? Just because it's something new, it doesn't mean it's good. And, while you mock people like that for having values, the most powerful country in the world has disgusting murder and crime rates with corrupt leaders, many more interested in making money than fixing the nations problems, so perhaps there's some validity to the statements.

In other words, this isn't a customer sucking, their points seem to be valid, and there's no articles to look over to see what they were objecting to, so you're just teasing someone because they're standing up for their beliefs. Good going.

Hate to break it to you, but there isn't a single overarching moral code. Yes, the moral code these people apparently follow(ed) has been around a long time, but it's by no means the only one in existence. Morality just isn't that cut and dried.

Ok, I'm not trying to flame you, but it would be against my moral code not to argue this. Seriously.

1) Dictionary.com defines immoral as not conforming to the patterns of conduct usually accepted or established as consistent with principles of personal and social ethics. Morality changes over time and varies from society to society. While some religions and traditions consider "casual" sex immoral, there are some that celebrate the body and pleasure it can feel and give. The same with love. We don't all follow your moral code, so don't act like it's the only one, or that ones that ones that came before, after, or from elsewhere aren't as valid.

2) The notion of lesbianism as new is laughable.

3) What makes you think that the OP is mocking people for having values? Anyone that appreciates the value of questioning beliefs by making them humourous would realise that mocking this kind of value is a value in and of itself.

4) How do you know that the OP isn't mocking the writer's grammar?

5) Lesbianism = murder, corruption, and selfishness?! Because societies that have been against non-procreative sex have never had those things. Do you really think that societies that embrace equality are so much worse than prior societies or those that tried to enforce a single moral and cultural view point?

6) As the ads aren't available, there is no reason for you to think that their are valid anymore than that they are not.

7) While I appreciate boycotts for moral principles, I also highly praise the value of laughing at an oppressive force to disempower it. Those of us that don't think we should be judged as immoral just because we don't love someone that someone else from another moral tradition thinks we should may consider holding bigoted view points up to ridicule a moral imperitive -- I certainly do.

8) If it matters, I'm not a lesbian.

The problems with 'morals' comes when one group tries to impose their 'morals' on another group. Not every culture & religion have the same morals. Unfortunately, people seem to delight in pushing their morals and beliefs on others.

As for 'the most powerful country in the world', if you're talking about the USA, it's currently under seige by the religious right, which is sure as hell not fixing the nations problems. The latest idiocy was appointing a guy who ran a crisis pregnancy center, and who thinks birth control is the devil to run the national family planning/sex education office, yep, that's gonna help our teen pregnancy rate lots!

Honestly? no matter what your beliefs or morals, it is none of anyone's business what two conseting adults do in the privacy of their bedrooms.

**I really don't want to hear from anyone objecting to this** if you didn't want to hear about it, posting in LJ was probably not a good way to go about it.

Oh noes, what I could or could not be doing in the privacy of my bedroom is immoral!

Hey, how about we talk about bondage and bdsm fetishists, huh? Guess what? That's immoral to do outside the bedroom. Beating someone is a horrible thing to do! Oh noes. But no one complains if you're into whips and chains in the bedroom.

You didn't take much history in school, did you? Homosexuality was open and quite encouraged in Greece, particularly in the army to ensure bonding. And hey, "lesbian" came from the island of Lesbos where a famous lesbian poet lived. So yeah ... how many years back was that and it was SOCIALLY ACCEPTED?

Sorry, but YOUR morals don't equal THE WORLD'S. I feel bad for the poor people who have to live a "straight" life because people like you have beat into their heads that they are disgusting, wrong and horrible people just because they don't love "the right sex".

Oh yeah, and I'm bisexual. Freedom to love a person, not a gender, thank you.

Guess what, everybody! We can put an end to over two thousand years of philosophical debate about ethics! Put away The Metaphysics of Morals, On Utilitarianism, Leviathan, Nichomachean Ethics and the Republic! Be troubled by moral dilemmas no more! Because _bird_man_ is here to define for us, once and for all, what is good and bad and right and wrong. We are astonishingly fortunate that throughout all of history, he alone can judge morality with complete certainty. We are all agog as to how you propose to assert this morality and thereby solve all of humanity's problems.

Yeah, it was incredibly odd coming home from getting the Wii, turning on the computer, and having YM show me "You have 85 new messages" along with my boyfriend going, "What have you done!?"

Personally I just posted it because it was a "WTF moment" as I was told to read it while up at registers. I found it funny, along with some other coworkers, and I just thought I'd share. You'd think I'd learn from the last post I made here that had to do with religious views I wouldn't do this, as I had no idea I'd get so many angry, either to me or others, emails.

Please. So, you're saying that you would sacrifice *your* happiness for someone, say, such as myself and that all the reward that you would need is knowing that someone else is happy while all you want to do is cry? Ok, I'll believe it when I see it. Humans generally don't sacrifice anything to make me happy. My parents didn't, my brother didn't, my friends don't and my husband certainly doesn't. But I've sacrificed plenty for all of them, I don't mention it, I don't complain about it. I've watched their happiness, have felt like they've rubbed my face in my unhappiness, I've cried myself to sleep and generally the balm they try to rub on whatever particular wound they left is a lame, "I'm sorry. I knew it would hurt you, but I had to take a chance for *me*. I didn't think it would hurt you this badly." Words. What in the world can I do with *words*? Words don't soothe anything. Words are what people give me when they want me to pretend to be happy so that they can continue enjoying whatever it is they've taken from me without feeling any guilt and without having to give anything of themselves. Well. They can go a head and continue to be happy. I'll reserve my right to stay morbidly UNhappy. Anyone who wants to offer me anything by way of "comforting words" might as well save themselves the "trouble". If seeing me while I'm UNhappy is such a burden for them, then they don't have to be around. It's not like I'm randomly handcuffing myself to people and forcing them to be around my miserable, bitter-self. I don't call anyone. I don't invite people to my home. I'm not going to pantomime simply because someone deigns to grace me with their presence. If someone really wants me to be happy, they're gonna have to shell out a lot more than words. They're going to have to SHOW me that they're sorry that I feel UNhappy by taking action to try to make me HAPPY. And that doesn't mean buying me some crappy little gift. That means coming up with a compromise that will make it so either we *both* get a little bit of what we wanted or we *both* sacrifice a little of what we wanted. That's the way I work. I've tried other ways and take it or leave it, this is me.
