To the Breast-feeding lady:

I am well aware you have a right to breast-feed your child. In fact, I congratulate you because apparently it's better for said child. What I object to is being faced with your thrusting breast while I'm trying to serve you. This is a cafe, not a titty-bar, and I do not expect to get breasts in my face when I go to work. Please, do me a favour and put a towel or something over your breast to save me and others the embarrassment. Especially, I would appreciate it if you did not also expose the breast not in use!

Thankyou very much,

Your very embarrased (and very female, very straight) Barrista.

I wonder - does anyone else have a problem with being surprised by a bared breast? Or pair of breasts in this case. The woman had her goddamn shirt fully unbuttoned and no bra on (and I betcha she'll complain about saggy breasts in a few years time, too...) It was in a shopping centre, even, where there are mothers' rooms.

It's rude and inconsiderate of others, precisely what she'd accuse others of being if they object to her actions.

Yes, breastfeed. Yes, breastfeed in public. But no letting it all hang out. That's what the special bras are for, the specialist clothing, even buttons on a normal shirt.

This ain't 1960 lady, letting it 'all hang out' is passe.

It's very unusual to see a person nursing in public when you can actually see the breast - the baby kinda covers that up, y'know? That you could see the other one makes me think you're not just remembering things that weren't there, though. Normally, though, I think most people find that covering the kid causes more attention to be directed towards the activity in question, which is counterproductive to the obvious goal of discreteness - especially if the baby objects to being fed under a heavy piece of cloth. That's what I've been told by several different people, anyway.

I don't have any problems with a bared top on a man or a woman (fairness, I say!), if you're curious and wanna set up an informal poll. (And if anybody tries to slippery-slope me, as far as they know, I'm all for public nudity. I hate it when people try slippery slope arguments.)

I don't mind people who breastfeed. It's just a pair of boobs, everyone has them. If you want to breastfeed in public, go ahead, it's your choice!

But like you, there's got to be at least some dignity. If you're using your left breast, cover your right and vice versa. And if there's a mother's room nearby, go there. Sure, it's natural, but so is going to the loo. You don't expect to see it in public.

Actually, I do - and I don't think that it's fair to compare it to using the toilet. Among other things, that's really an uncreative argument. Lots of people think otherwise, but... yeah.

Actually from all that I've read, it is not safe to breast feed babies. Now before you get in an uproar, I know that the baby, when breast fed, gets things to immunize them from diseases and such, and generally it gives them a healthier immune system and all sorts of good stuff.

However

Think of all the random crap people eat these days. Now, think of all that random crap being transmitted to the baby :( I think you should be healthy before breastfeeding, and some people just aren't these days.

Well, yeah, of course it's not safe to breastfeed if you eat lots of processed crap, or if you do drugs, smoke, drink alcohol, etc. But generalizing that to meant breastfeeding is "not safe," period, is a prety darn humongous leap. The vast majority of mothers take care of themselves, eat well, and all that, both during and after pregnancy.

I saw a breast-feeding mother at the mall yesterday, and although it was a bit obvious, it was also discreet.

I think breasts are seen differently depending on the situation. As a source of sexual arousal, a source of food, or just a sex (as in gender) characteristic. We as a nation/world need to ease up, but not let go, of our bias on them.

Wow, three beers and I'm more literate than I am sober. But typing is a bit harder...

I am a breastfeeding mother and I have done it in public. That said however, I have never had to expose my breasts to anyone other than my baby. It's not easy to be discreet and there might be a small amount of my breast showing at the sides because my daughter won't eat under a blanket and I find it almost impossible to do that way, but there is no need for the same exposure you'd get at a topless beach. Decorum is NOT overrated and flashing people is rude.

See, I find that acceptable. It was mostly the fact that I could see all of one breast all the time, and the other breast at least half the time, because she stopped her daughter from feeding to order.

I guess decorum is the point I was trying to get across.

This issue puts me at odds with many feminists. Especially because where I live, women are allowed to go barechest just like men (and I support that law)

I like boobs. I just don't think a baby sucking some teet is that attractive. I employ the "don't like it, don't look" attitude, however I also think some personal responsibility is necessary. It's not that hard to put a cover over, or find a quiet corner. I bet your precious chyild would appreciate it too.

In other words - there's no need to make your barrista embarrassed by not having a bare breast less than half a metre away from her face? I had no choice. I could see it from where I was standing so clearly that unless I purposefully looked the other way and risk being accused of bad service or ignoring her...

agreed. if she feels comfortable enough to do it in public, more power to her. if she feels the need to hide it with a blanket, good for her. if she feels shy about it and does it in private, whatever. i don't see how her breastfeeding in public makes her a sucky customer.

The OP is from Queensland, Australia. I'm from Perth, similar summer temps. It's very nearly summer here.
Have you tried walking around/eating/drinknig with a blanket over your head in hot weather?

Okay, I am a firm believer is breast-feeding, and I will never require a woman to go to the bathroom to feed their child (would you want to eat your lunch there?).

However, there is such a thing as class. Put a towel or blanket over your shoulder. There are ways to breast-feed without being obvious. Breasts may be nice and no different than facial hair (yes, I've heard that defence to bare-breastedness), but whipping it our to feed you child is the hight of tacky.

It doesn't even need to go that far, a kid usually covers up a boob nicely. Just keep the other one inside your fucking shirt. Ugh.

I think breastfeeding is great and all...but If I want to see two breasts exposed, I could watch Cinamax or go to a strip club, not head down to closest titty bar, but c'mon. public place.

I have no problem with breastfeeding. That, however, does not mean a woman can whip 'em out for the world to see, and I'll be happy about it. If I want to see tits, I'll take my shirt off & stand in front of a mirror.

One of these days, a woman is gonna whip 'em out, and I'm gonna have my BF walk over & start unzipping his pants. let her ask what the hell he's doing. Word for word: "You whipped yours out for me to see, so I figured I'd return the favor". (we are both total smartasses)

Well, to be completely blunt, if you're embarassed with her bare breasts while feeding her child, it's you who has the problem, not her.

Do you go to topless beaches and get all wigged out by the topless girls?

Evolution dictated that mammaries are for feeding young. Sexual and social connotations are a fairly recent development.

In other words, deal.

I don't go to topless beaches.

There is a dress code here, regarding places such as restaurants. It requires people of both sexes to wear shirts and shoes and some kind of covering on the bottom half.

The only problem I have is that it is a.) completely unnecessary to expose both breasts and b.) That she was doing it at the counter at which I make, prepare and serve food and drinks.

My mother relayed stories about breastfeeding me to, well, me.

Most of them were prompted by shitty parents with screaming kids at movie theaters.

According to her, when I was a baby, they went to see movies. They sat in the back, with a blanket, and if I got fussy, the blanket went up, her top went down, and I was a happy camper.

As a warm-blooded male, I will state that I love the breasts. Can't get enough. Big ones, small ones, perky or not. Movies, in person, pictures, I don't care. But there is a time and place to breastfeed, and it's not in a cafe.

I'm fascinated by your use of the word "thrusting". Was she really "thrusting" her breast at you? If so, perhaps she was trying to entice you! And your need to emphasize in your post that you are "very straight" makes me wonder if you believe that might have been her intention.

As an employee, aren't you there to enforce the dress code? Did you ask her to curtail her libertine lactation for the benefit of the other customers?

Well when she takes the baby away as soon as someone gets within three feet of her and leaves her shirt open with no baby the entire time they're there, that's not breastfeeding.

Personally, I am a gay man and breasts do not bother me. I do agree that she did not need to expose both breasts. When a woman breastfeeds, the baby usually covers a good portion of the breast. There is no need to show everyone else the other one. but then again, as we know not everyone in this community will agree with what someone says.

ok sooo.... because she was breastfeeding, to feed the child, therefore it is appropriate to have the non-feeding breast completely exposed?
and then to remove the child from feeding, and leave her shirt up exposing both breasts quite clearly while she orders?
gotta love your logic there.
in case you actn read, which is entirely possible, the issue was not with breastfeeding, but exposing the other breast and leaving both tits out to say hi while ordering.

I love how breastfeeding discussions always attract wank. ;)

I'm not a fan of breastfeeding; it squicks me out. It's totally irrational on my part, but there you have it. I do believe women should be allowed to breastfeed in public, though.

That said, I think having them both out whilst ordering is rude. It's great she's so confident, but there is such a thing as basic courtesy. She can't expect the whole "don't like, don't look" rule to apply when she's giving you no choice but to deal with her.
