I agree that she shoul've gotten her seat, but not to that extent.

She intentionally provoked panic/fear among OTHER passengers of the airline to get her way. That is absolutely uncalled for. You don't always get what you want. It's life.

She should've spoken with a manger and told him/her that she was unsatisfied and wanted to be seated right then, instead of being a bitch about it. She turned into a sucky customer at that point.

Nope. She hadn't a leg to stand on.
Free tickets are discretionary. Scheduled, paying passengers are seated first.

As someone who went through a spectacular amount of hassle trying to get home because KLM managed to miss that particluar bit of their own rule-book in dealing with a flight of tired, worried, delayed passengers I have no sympathy.

And if that manager had had a spine, he'd have had her arrested.

There's this thing....called the chain of command which the EB in that post apparently cannot make her slugbrain comprehend. Sure, sure, the ticket dude caused the strike, and hell...he probably sets the airline ticket prices too. Just like every person who works in customer service sets the price of whatever they sell. Hell, I personally set the global price of coffee. No really...when I'm not managing my store/making lattes, I'm flying all over the world sitting in on global consortiums saying "no way....we gotta make coffee more expensive, because I love getting bitched out about how much it costs. It just makes me all squishy inside!" And they all nod and agree with me...cause I'm just that important. Okay wait....that's just my insane powermad persona peeking out. Back to reality now.
The dumb bitch threw a hissy cause she couldn't get her way for her FREE ticket, and inspired panic in her fellow travelers...that's just loverly. Poor ticket dude...that's ridiculous. If you have a problem, go to the higher ups. *shakes her head*

I don't agree with her methods at all (and the poor ticket guy it wasn't his fault!), but airlines have screwed me and people I know out of money by refusing to refund tickets when it is all their fault. I can understand her despiration to get on a flight. It's sad that that's what it takes to be treated well by an airline. :-/

But it wasn't a refund. It was a free ticket in the first place? Maybe the was the airline's form of a refund? Sure, but the OP never mentioned if it was. Everyone has a right to be strssed out at the airport, but no one has the right to treat a fellow human being that way. For *any* reason. Getting what you're entitled to (whether you're actually entitled to it or not) is not an excuse for treating another person like shit to get it.

The longer I am in CS the more I hate it.

No matter what policies we have in place, that we can not bend them even for the nicests of people..
The Upper Brass of Management will almost always* bend them for those who bicker, scream, cry. Lay down and kick their feet like irrant two year olds.

Until their way is given to get them to shut up. We wont put up with this behavior from children, but we should with adults that act like them?

Sure, if she had a free voucher, she should be able to use it. However, it wasn't the person behind the counters fault. She could have asked to speak to a manager on duty, because they are the ones who have the ability to do these things. Not yelling at someone low on the ranks who is only doing what they are told, can not help her in any way, and because of her.. probably had a crappy day.

I'd have given her a seat, if I were management. But only one that was an aisle, and made sure to stick her behind older people. And tell the flight attendants to keep those older people in their weight in prune juice.

Yeah it happens here too...
We get students who want to be treated "special" by us even by breaking rules. Bosses will sometimes bend and let it go by then try to make what they did sound ok to us. But they always insist, WE can't bend over backwards but when we try to enforce something and then the student makes a scene... the boss comes out and makes it look like we were being the meanie. Really irritating... they should support that we are doing our jobs, not choose to go "well I understand you better than THEY do." *big point in our direction* :P

No, I think she handled it just fine. She didn't say anything about terrorism. She wasn't abusing the worker at the counter. She just insisted that her ticket be honored, which NorthWorst should do.

NorthWorst has made a fortune abusing customers, from losing luggage to overcharging at its hubs to having chronically late flights. It has also made its fortune from chronically abusing its workers.

A customer who relied on their honoring a ticket shouldn't have to resort to guerilla tactics to get them to do it. She shouldn't have to spend many hundreds of dollars in the last minute to make alternate, emergency arrangements. I feel bad for the guy who was caught in the middle, but all in all justice was served. Sometimes you have to make a corporation deal with its own crapola, and there's no way to do it but apply pressure... which does require that a human agent of that corporation be involved.

I don't approve of her methods but I can understand her frustration.
That happened to me this last yr. Because of weather the plane I was to take home was delayed 4 hours. I had never had this problem before and it was extremely frustrating.

When I finally got on a flight and was able to get to the next port of call, they told me I missed my flight (duh) and that I'd have to run to get this other one. I run over there (person didn't bother to tell me it took off 30 mins ago) and another person tells me "Sorry you missed the flight." Which by now I was frustrated and they hand me off to another place. I have to explain my story yet again but after some time and keeping myself from crying and screaming, I got on the next flight out. *whew*

==========

I'm a patient person but this one girl (possibly under 25) answers the phone for a local game place. She says "hold on I have some customers." No biggie... she doesn't put me on hold though she lets the phone sit there so I can hear her helping people. Then she moves away from the counter to help more... and more and I hear the door open and close and more people come in meanwhile, she's forgotten "I" am on the phone and I was before these "people" who came in. *grumble grumble*

15 mins of this and she has the nerve to hang up on me forgetting still that "I" am on the phone... a potential (not so much now) customer. I had to hear her when nobody was there talking to her co-worker about her boss, other people and how much she wanted to go get some food across the street while she was forgetting I was on the phone "waiting."

I call back, she answers, I say "I was on the phone for 15 mins waiting for someone there to pick up." She was nice enough though not sincere enough for me to say "I think that was me, I guess I forgot." And I told her something I rarely say: "I WAS going to buy a game from you, but I think I will go elsewhere. You just lost a customer." And I hung up and called another store.

Yes, but you were a paying customer. They're supposed to ensure you get a seat.
I've been there. It sucks. Muchly. Particularly if you throw Amsterdam airport and it squillion odd miles of concourses in the mix. But again, paying customer. Making a fuss is understandable.

But free tickets entitle you to nothing except any free seat that comes up. And an ass-kicking if you open your mouth otherwise.

I find it somewhat amusing that she'd been told her ticket would not be valid during the strike *before she even left her own home*. On the word of a friend, she went to a competing airline. And while I've heard of sister corporations honoring tickets for each other--like Delta/Comair--I've never heard of an airline handing out a free seat to a customer of the competing airline. This airline, in what looks to me like an attempt to say, "WTF, you are so not our problem!" sends her over.

She knew very well before ever arriving at the airport that they wouldn't honor her free ticket. Besides the fact that everything 'free' comes with numerous strings attached, there were extenuating circumstances, i.e. that an important labor department was *on strike*.

So, after being told that she'd have to wait to use her free ticket, she drove there anyway on the word of a friend to try and get another airline to honor it. On the word of an employee of said competing airline, who A) was likely looking to just get rid of a problem that wasn't theirs and B) did not have knowledge of the policies of the competing airline, the OP demanded what had already been explained to her as being unavailable.

On top of all that, she intentionally and vindictively stirs up the people in line behind her, in such a way that, instead of getting her ass hauled off for questioning by security, got her exactly what she was bitching for.

And that is why people continue to act like ignorant morons to CS reps. Because if they bitch and moan loud enough, and cause enough trouble, the company will throw them what they want just to be rid of them.

Nice post. It blows my mind that people ARE cheering her on and defending her.
This is not only why people treat reps like crap...but why people are dumbasses in general. They act like stupid idiots, when the stupidity bites them in the ass they shriek and whine enough until someone does something to shut them up (normally causing trouble for at LEAST one of the employees) and then others pat them on the back and applaud them for "sticking it to the company"
Yes. Most humans are complete dumbasses.
