Random Memory of Customer Suckage
I used to work in the deli at one of the big supermarkets.

In the parking lot, they installed signs proclaiming that some of the closer spots were Expectant Mother & Toddler Parking. They were the ones after the handicapped parking.

Most people didn't bother to mention the change...but the people who complained the loudest surprised me. They were mostly elderly women...who, you'd think, would have appreciated the effort when they were young...

I heard it in the deli; I feel sorry for the poor people behind the actual customer service desk.

And expectant mothers and moms with small kids get priority parking why, exactly?

Didn't we just deal with this in another post?

I would complain too. I'd rather see more parking for the truly disabled than this attempt at 'courtesy'.

I want a 'too lazy to walk more than ten feet' spot. Then I'll feel as if I'm given equal consideration as with people that can't find someone to watch their brats for an hour or two.

Agreed. I'd much rather see more parking for legitimately disabled people instead of designating spaces for expectant moms and toddlers.

Thanks; I appreciate this.

When I was pregnant, my sciatic nerve was inflamed and every time I took a step with my left foot, I would get a shooting pain up my leg and into my back, so bad that sometimes I would fall or almost scream.

This type of thing is rather common.

But nah, why do a courtesy spot? Pregnant women are all lazy! None of them can possibly be experiencing temporary disabilities! Lazy, I say!

I'm actually going to throw my lot in with the "Why?" crowd. Yes, pregnant women can end up having problems due to their pregnancy, to the point where parking closer is better. However, being pregnant is (for most) a choice. You knew you were going to have these problems as time went on. If you're a single mother, ask your friends or relatives to help you shop; if you're married/in a relationship, ask the other half to do the shopping.

Keep asking until your kid can be expected to not scream through the entire shopping trip... please... for the sanity and eardrums of those around you!

For the one commenter that said something about the sciatic nerve... technically she could have gotten a disabled placard and used that.

I really don't think that people should get preferential parking because they're about to pop or have a small child. I'm not pregnant and never will have kids, but I have back spasms often enough and don't qualify for disabled parking... but I have my bad days. I'd like to park closer sometimes... but for the most part I'm content to park further away. The walk won't kill me, and it'll burn some calories (hey I'm fat I'll admit it!)

I might have been able to get such a placard but I would probably have had to go to the DMV and heh, I'd rather have the nap.

As for being pregnant, not to get too personal, but it wasn't planned. I dealt with it as best I could.

Ugh I hate those parking spots. Luckily however, there aren't really any around here.

There's a difference between "I'm pregnant and just lazy", and those who really are having pregnancy problems. Though most of those with real problems will either stay home, or they get handicapped tags or what not for their vehicles to use handicapped spots.

It would've been nice to get such a tag but I didn't feel that I ought to because I didn't feel my physical issues, such as they were, were enough to warrant the tag. That's why I said that I would never demand such a parking spot or say that I was entitled to one.

Also, to get such a tag I would have had to stand in line at the license plate place--and with working full time and going to school full time and being pregnant--nah, no thanks :D

If a pregnant woman is going shopping and knows she will have problems, she could bring someone with her, or alert an employee in a lot and ask them to get you one of the moterized carts.

Unless no one she knows who is free too has the time to go shopping when she feels up to it? Many people have to work to live you know, and many pregnant women or women with little children have to and do handle their lives by themselves.

And it is not a problem of not being able to walk, most pregnant women can walk just fine; the parking spaces are about carrying around them carrying around heavy shopping (and yes, they may have to buy that much because they might not be able to make it to the store again soon), and for women with small children getting the pram out of the car and setting it up while making sure that one or more children don't run off; it's about not running the risk of small children running all over the parking lot. By preventing accidents, it is in the interest of the store.

(This isn't aimed at the OP, just a general comment to all the screechers...)

If people with toddlers can park closer to the store, thus avoiding huge long walks that make little kids cranky, it'll be much more pleasant for everyone in the store...

Pregnancy and parenthood are choices, but unless every childfree activist is willing to admit that nobody is a good parent and nobody deserves to have help with their kids, I can't take any of their objections seriously. Do you hate your own mother that much? Do you wish she'd suffered more when she was pregnant with you?

Adopted here - and I don't want anyone to suffer. I haven't implied anything like that, nor have I implied that pregnant women are lazy or stupid for wanting a closer parking spot. Everyone wants a closer spot, pregnant, mom of small kid or Josephine Blow who doesn't feel like walking far. I just don't think that anyone is entitled to one.

That, and I know those 'courtesy spots' are catering to a demographic that by and large spends more money in their store, not because they feel sympathy for hard-working moms or pregnant women.

I do not agree with courtesy spots at supermarkets for pregnant women/women with children. Not at all. There are places for that sort of thing, for instance the doctor's office. But WalMart? Give me a fucking break.

As I already told the whiner further up the thread, I'm disabled but I don't have a blue dangly thing (and it's not because I'm lazy and want a nap instead, either). I don't appreciate being treated as less than a person just because I'm not choosing to reproduce. And yes, I will take the preggo spots if my personal pain is bad enough that I don't feel walking it off for a bit will work. I didn't choose my life. Even if your pregnancy wasn't planned, you still CHOSE to keep it. It's your bed, now you lie in it. Supermarkets should not be expected to bow to your whims alone--I want my "Sometimes Too Disabled To Walk Far" courtesy spot if you get yours.

The funniest thing about this entire trolling commentary going on is that the spots aren't legally binding. The stores put them up as a courtesy sure but if someone childless and/or not pregnant parks there you're not getting a ticket and a tow for christ's sake.

Here in the UK it's not uncommon to find 'parent and child' parking spaces in supermarkets. They have a few feet extra around the actual space so that a pushchair can be pulled around the side of the car.

You'd think that would make people understand, no? Some of the US c_f feel that pregnant women and little children should be demonized obviously.

I used to enjoy reading the posts here but lately I've been seeing more and more total assholes in this place. When did they all come out of the woodwork? Why do they have to be so downright nasty? Is it impossible to disagree without resorting to name calling and total bitchiness?

Yes. Yes, it was.

I thought that maybe the lunatic fringe of the Childfree community was a bit exhausted after the moo-orgy that was that last post. Apparently, I was wrong!

I work public relations in a hospital. We have EVERYTHING from Handicapped, to Expectant/New Mothers, to Law Enforcement to, yes...even Clergy Parking.

People that bitch about designated parking spaces or even the lack there of are the nightmare of my day.

Old people/Pregants/Cops/Priests: "THERE ARENT ENOUGH SPACES I CAN NEVER FIND ONE!!!" Im sorry you feel the need to bitch even though we provide you with the service. Dont tell me how to do my job concerning the public parking and I wont tell you what brand of tennis balls to put on your walker/how to dress your baby/how to polish your gun/how to thump your bible.

Everyone else: Suck it up and walk the extra 12 feet. Judging from the level of fat people I see everyday, you need every extra foot of exercise you can get.

Hell, we even provide you with a fucking stretch golf-cart to DRIVE YOU to your car if you dont want to walk. And that goes for EVERYONE. And yet you all still bitch.

Humanity sucks.

I'm never going to be able to get behind the child hatred because WE WERE ALL CHILDREN AT ONE POINT. For many of us, it's been less than a decade. Yes, kids can be annoying as all hell but we were all that way. Choosing to be child-free is awesome, but I can't stand the whole "crotch-dropping" mentality. There, I said it.

Pregnant women earn those spots. People who disagree have obviously never been pregnant.

... They earn those spots by performing a normal biological function? That seems a little off to me.

As for the actual issue: I see this with a lot of older women; most people getting up on the train to allow old & not very agily (you can tell by the way someone walks)/the disabled/pregnant women who don't look too chipper/women carrying a small child to sit down are other young and often younger women, more in the hope that someone will do the same for them should they be in the same position (or for their parents, it's what I often think), the people less likely to get up are the baby boomers for some reason, no generation that feels as entitled as they do.

Then there is also that pregnant women who might feel very bad - losing too much weight because of morning sickness, combined with anemia or running the risk of miscarrying - aren't showing yet, their bodies still look the same as anyone else's, and the old biddies might have forgot that you don't immediately turn Moby Dick when you're pregnant.

Also, there is the old generation's ubiquitous shout of 'IN MY DAYS! WE WALKED TWELVE MILES THROUGH THE SNOW TO GET GROCERIES! DURING LABOUR! CARRIED TWELVE GALLONS OF MILK! AND FORTY CLOTH DIAPERS! AND TWELVE MILES BACK! GIVING BIRTH ON THE WAY HOME!' They've always achieved more, done more, and suffered more than any young person can ever hope to do, and feel about all the advantages younger people have.

Make that 'feel bitter and cheated out of' all the advantages young people have. They probably don't remember that in their days there weren't quite as many people with cars and cell phones likely to run over their children.

Personally, the E.M parking, I think is a wonderful idea. Of course, keeping in mind, keep the Handicapped spaces as well. The toddlers on the other hand, I think, that after you go through labor, you can park anywhere(not in the EM and Handicapped spots of course) and walk with your kids, or get a cart from the coral and push them in.

As for the delivery service, my old job, the grocery store, didn't have one. We had two or three MOM spots, it was out of curtosy. Oh well, that's how I feel.

Honestly, what I'd like to see (childfree and disabled-but-not-enough-to-get-a-placard here) is for stores to call these spaces something else. Perhaps "parking for temporarily disabled customers" or something like that, so that they may fairly be used by pregnant women, people with bad chronic pain like myself, people who just slammed their toe in a door and are limping for a day, etc. It's calling them specifically "expectant mother" parking that irritates people, as if there aren't other customers who need the extra few feet once in a while. (And in my local store's lot, it's usually a lot more than a few feet-- there are eight spaces allocated to pregnant women or "customer with child", all the rest of the close spaces are either designated handicapped or right next to a cart rack. Especially since their lot isn't very big to begin with.)

Hm.

I don't like them much either, but mostly because I've never seen pregnancy as a 'disability'. Aren't we striving to make this a more common, everyday sort of thing, not worth whispers and treating the pregnant like they are delicate glass flowers that might break at the slightest bump or bruise? We don't have months-long 'lying ins' anymore, we don't seclude our pregnant women, and more and more women are being encouraged to walk/swim/excercise throughout pregnancy, and to /not/ treat it as if it's a physical disability and something to be 'endured'.

Just seems like a whole row of dedicated spaces is sort of a step backwards. I'd gladly help a pregnant woman with her bags, because that's just a nice thing to do...but enforcng this? (However slackly it can be enforced) We all have our aches and pains, whether from a slip and fall, the flu, long hours on our feet, or pregnancy.

(And yes, I'm talking about run of the mill pregnancy. Not 'I have five slipped discs and high blood pressure and you can no longer tell I have ankles!!!' Obviously, there are exceptions to everything. I just don't think those spaces are catering to the exception)

You know, the parent and child parking spaces at my local supermarket are actually more of a hindrance than a help. There's further to walk than in most other spaces and you have to do it against the traffic in a very tight space, because there's no pavement. Most people just use the normal ones.

This had very little to do with the original post. Makes a nice change from the wank, though, doesn't it?
