You can sing along if you know the song.
So one of my cousins, bless is cute little heart, tends to be a bit of a crazy-maker sometimes. When he gets annoyed about something, he gets really annoyed. Usually this doesn't do anything other than convince people he's a bigot when he's not (I promise he's not), but today... it made him a sucky customer.

We were at a local Canadian retail place, and like many businesses here, they're collecting donations for Hurricane Katrina. The cashier asked if I would like to donate a dollar to help out...

Me = duh
K = Ranting but kind-hearted (usually) cousin
C = cashier

Me: Yeah sure, I'll donate.
C: Thank you!
K: Goddamnit, I'm tired of hearing about the hurricane!
Me: What why?
K: It's always being shoved down my throat! Everywhere I go! It's just like the tsunami thing!
Me: Well thousands of lives are ruined, why not help out? It's a buck for God's sake.
C: *looking uncomfortable and annoyed at him*
K: But seriously, why does it have to be sh---
Me: STOP. Being. A. Little. BITCH!
K: *is cut off and stares unblinking*
C: *tries to stop but just bursts out laughing*

So... poor cashier, I'm sorry that my cousin doesn't think before he speaks, but I'm glad you got a laugh in for the day.

>>the real death toll was 83 in Louisiana.>>

Last I heard, it was above 800 in New Orleans alone. (source - BBC, and I'd link a story if their website weren't being a bitch and a half.)

And my aunt and uncle, who live in Gulfport, definitely had their property destroyed.

Found it - I was slightly off, as this article reports the death toll at 792, but they're still finding bodies. :/

Like what? Diseases spread by dirty floodwater? Starvation? Lack of medication? Secondary effects, perhaps, but effects nonetheless.

because, you know, Katrina totally waited for Labor Day to hit the shores.

I find it strange that at first Katrina was labeled as a "class five storm" and was later downgraded to a class four.

That happens to hurricanes a lot. Ophelia changed status a few times as well.

Dude, almost the entire state of Mississippi was without power for at least a couple of days. I drove through said state on Tuesday right after the storm, and even from the interstate (I-20 for those who care), you could see trees down and suchlike all along it.

Even as far north as Vicksburg (which is about 3, 3 and a half hours northeast of New Orleans), where I'm from, power went out (for several days, minimum), trees were down, and houses were damaged. We didn't get that much rain, comparatively speaking, so no flooding that I know of but still....if it was that bad up there? Yeah, I could imagine it was much worse down towards the Coast.

Yeah, gas prices were hiked, but that wasn't oil companies planning a disaster so much as taking advantage of one.

I know people who live an hour or so north of NO that had trees fall on their house and had to move up to Starkville and stay there for a while because they didn't have anywhere else to go.

I know people who live near Pascagoula who were without power for a very long time and could hardly get away from their house after the storm because of all the damage around them, though luckily, their house wasn't damaged.

I mean, geez, paranoid much?

So if you lost everything, and I mean EVERYTHING you own, AND your city was destroyed to the point you had no way to get food or water to survive, and you had no place to live but a flooded, toxic street, you'd go, "Oh well, I had it better than those other 2 billion people, I'll just adapt without help from anyone." ???

"I find it strange that at first Katrina was labeled as a "class five storm" and was later downgraded to a class four. "

that's cause once the hurricane hits land, it begins to lose the elements that kept it so powerful.

think of it as a laptop who's powercord was removed and its then left to run on its internal batteries, slowly the power level dies down until there's nothing left.

Uh...

>>I find it strange that at first Katrina was labeled as a "class five storm" and was later downgraded to a class four.<<

This happens regularly. Storms gain and lose strength throughout their duration.

>>I also find it suspicious that USA today reported "death toll could possibly be in thousands" right after the storm, but the real death toll was 83 in Louisiana.<<

Everyone knows USA Today is McNews. Aside from that, the death toll is already near 800. They expect to find more.

>>I know people who live in Kenner, which is right near New Orleans, and they're perfectly fine.<<

Disasters sometimes miss areas right near other hard-hit areas. I live in wildfire territory, and sometimes entire proprties get completely missed by fire, while the neighbors' homes burn. That's how it is - small varibles make a difference.

Paranoid much?

this is a picture of Katrina's projected path prior to her making landfall, it also includes locations of oil refinaries in that area:

Free Image Hosting at www.ImageShack.us

The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale is the scale that hurricanes are measured by. You can find out more information on hurricanes at Hurricanes are fed by warm water so a pocket of cold air, cold water, no water at all (ie. land) can reduce the hurricane's strength and therefore damage. Except for windspeed, Katrina was stronger than Camille, which was the third strongest in the US (Camille was 200mph winds, 905mb barometric pressure, Katrina capped out about 175mph I believe with a 903mb barometric pressure at one point, I believe)

2 sisters, 2 nieces, 1 nephew, my mother-in-law, my best friend, and all of their families plus other friends and associates all lost their homes due to flooding in St. Bernard Parish from to Katrina. St. Bernard has several refineries and all are closed until January at the earliest. My family won't be able to move back home until August of next year at the earliest (and that's not likely) since their homes have to be torn down and rebuilt. There were some 80 deaths in St. Bernard alone (counting the 34 from St. Rita's nursing home) with a population of 67,000 and with more people able to evacuate ahead of the storm. I know that this is true because people I know have gone back to try and salvage things from their homes only to find that either their house no longer exists, or it's in such a state that it's virtually impossible to salvage ANYTHING. These weren't even the homes that had crude oil in them due to the leak from an oil tank. The footage the news media is showing is NOTHING compared to what my home town is having to go through, the news is completely ignoring the first to parishes in Louisiana. So yeah, they aren't showing everything, it's much much worse. 75% of St. Bernard parish will have to be torn down and rebuilt from scratch.

Hurricane Andrew hit Land as a Category 4 storm, but after going back and reviewing the damage caused they reclassified it as Category 5. It happens once in a while. Categories are just a way of measuring windspeed and damage, estimates can be off. the Fujita scale for tornadoes works the same, I think... been a while since I stared into a weather book
