Here's what I suggest we do...
I think all us customers_suck members should be donating to the red cross for Katrina relief. As a group of like minded people, we can definelty give a dollar, five, or whatever we can afford.

I am currently getting Ani Difranco fans on some other lj communities to donate and I asked her record company to donate or match our donations. But that's just 2 communities. I think we should do more! Please!

Give money to the Red Cross, tell others to give. We have customers_suck members here that have been DIRECTLY AFFECTED by Katrina, so this isn't off topic. Please give, and comment the amount/what you've done to help so we can celebrate our accomplishments.

EDIT IF YOU HAVE SOME SORT OF PROBLEM WITH SOMONE ASKING FOR YOUR HELP, THEN DON'T BOTHER COMMENTING. IT'S STUPID THAT ANYONE WOULD BE MAD AT A PERSON FOR ASKING FOR THIER HELP. IF YOU CAN'T OR WON'T DONATE TO WHATEVER CHARITY YOU WANT, THAT'S YOUR THING. I'M JUST ASKING FOR HELP.

If you can't give money, give your time or your blood. Both are needed by the American Red Cross.

Look, hippie... Those of us who get the enormity of the situation have already donated or are getting ready to.

And I don't see why we should post how much we gave because it's not a contest or a feel-good circle-jerk hempfest. It's real goddamn life. I didn't give to "celebrate". I gave so they can get water and first-aid and the help they need. I'd "celebrate" if Superman came down, turned back time, and stopped the thing, but it's not gonna happen.

Angry much?

You know, maybe the word celebrate wasn't the wisest choice, but you don't have to be mean. I just thought for those who might not know (and yes, I've come across some who didn't know about it)

If you have problems with this, then you're sick. Sorry.

I volunteer for the Red Cross in Canada and we are having two fundraisers for it. One is a car wash and one is a canned food drive where we give people beads (like at Mardi Gras) in exchange for food.

Yeah, I'd love to donate. However, money is tight for me. I spent my savings buying hurricane supplies when Florida had the Katrina scare (I live in northwest Florida and was hit by Hurricane Ivan last year). I work two jobs at minimum wage and most of my money goes to paying bills, gas, and food. My time is limited, so I can't volunteer. Also, I can't donate blood (I was born in Europe and lived there over six-months), there's nothing much I can do.

It doesn't mean that I wouldn't love to help. I know what the damage is like, I've been there. I've known what it's like, even if it isn't quite at the level New Orleans is on. I'm just unable to. So it's a little irritating and rude to see you demanding that people donate. Some of us are simply strapped for cash and time.

So please. Get off your high horse.

Besides, what if we have our money tied up in other charities? Are we still bad people for not donating to the charity du jour?

I didn't demand, I asked, I begged.

A dollar wouldn't hurt anyone, it really wouldn't. If you don't want to or can't, fine then don't.

But don't insult someone who is trying to rally people to help save lives, which is much more than you seem to be doing by lying about what's written right in front of you.

You've lived through a Hurricane, I have not. I have not experienced anything like that. My thoughts are with EVERYONE who's affected by any tradgey. My God, if someone asking for your help upsets you, then you are a sad sad individual.

Actually, I can't give. Not even a dollar. A dollar means my being able to buy a box of macaroni and cheese rather than going without food. A dollar means being able to buy a couple of cans of cat food so that my cats don't go without food either.

I also cannot donate blood; I'm not medically allowed to. While I would happily donate my time, that's something I also cannot donate because I am working all weekend (a job for which I won't get paid for a month) and all of next week (for which I won't get paid for two weeks.)

However, if you go to this link Tribe.net will donate one dollar to the Red Cross for everyone who registers and logs in at least once in the next seven days.

I'm of the opinion that people who have the money, blood, or time to give and are in fact not "sad" or "sick" individuals will do it without being guilted into it by some anonymous icon on an LJ community.

You're getting the responses you are because your post is in extremely poor taste. You started with the assumption that members of this community haven't already donated as much as they could manage. Then you suggested we should throw ourselves a party for donating.

Go ahead and pat yourself on the back all you want. I'll celebrate when the last survivor has been rescued.

I would LOVE to donate money I really would but personally I need my money in order to live. *sighs* that and its not my fault those people didn't listen to all the warnings that they were given. Everyone was told numerous times to evacuate their homes and those that didn't I'm sorry but I need to live too. I will continue to donate my blood every chance I get but I can't do much else.

That's a little harsh. With little money or no cars, a lot of those people couldn't evacuate. If you don't have family in aother town or state where the hell where they supposed to evacuate to?

Dude. During hurricane Georges everyone was told to evacate to Mississippi. The hurricane then bowled through Mississippi, where everyone had thought they'd be safe. Can you blame them for not tructing the sort of advice that previously got people killed? Not to mention the poverty issues that are going to prevent people from travelling. I have absolutely nothing against your choosing not to donate money, but to turn around and basically blame these people for what happened is crass as hell.

I really don't think this person who made this post MEANT to offend anyone. I think they were just feeling empowered by the idea that if we all DO something, we can make a difference.

Yes, the end of the post is a bit foolish, but lambasting someone for their genuinely-felt need to help people who desperately need it, is asshatish.

People have lost everything in their lives: homes, pictures, possessions, family, friends, children. If you can turn a blind eye to it, then you are truly sub-human.

I know people aren't gonna like what I have to say, but I'm gonna say it anyways.

I don't consider this hurricane to be a major tragedy, and I don;t intend to give money to red cross or anybody else to help the "victims". I don't feel sorry for a bunch of people who lost things that 75% of the world doesn't have anwyays.

no clean water - thats lacking in most of the world
food shortage - daily life for many
lost your home - how bout those with no home to start with?
lost a child or family member - in many 3rd world countries the mortality rate for children is 75% or greater
having to stay in a shelter with 30 other people - be glad you have shelter
have to wait or pay for medical care - how bout those who, when injured, have no access to a doctor or any form of medicine
lost "memories" - those aren't memories, they're photos and souvenirs. memories are in your head.

Basically these people have lost comforts and luxuries they've become so used to they suffer without them. When you compare standards of current living of hurricane victims with those of many people around the world in places such as west arfica and south america,it doesn't seem to bad. The reason this is a tragedy is the sudden change, I hope it will wake these people up to what's happening in the rest of the world.

and on a last note, don't trust red cross! a few eyars ago kelowna, a city near me suffered huge forest fires and around 1/4 of the homes were burned. red cross collected millions of dollars in aid and yet most of it never reached the fire victims. If you want to donate, donate to the shelters currently supporting these people.

That's all I have to say. Some will think I'm heartless, but I simply don;t feel much pity for those who had so much, and have lost some of it.

Actually, if you look again, the people that are in need of the help, are poor (mostly) black people. Who didn't have all the things you're saying they did anyway. From the looks of it, a good portion lived in poor neighborhoods, and probably collected welfare in an attempt to survive. Have you missed all the people who are old and in poor health? Or those missing teeth because they can't afford healthcare? No, their lives are not as bad as someone from a third world country, but it now is. They are living in a now completely destroyed area, with no food, no healthcare, no medicine and people are dying, being murdered, being raped. And let's not mention all the footage of the dead wrapped in a simple sheet and pushed off to the side or the bodies floating throughout the city or the folks that are still on their rooftops begging for help five days later. But yeah, they had so much, they barely have a rooftop to beg help on in some places.

Please, please don't flame me for what Kira posted earlier. I completely agree that it sounds kind of heartless but none of you understand her situation. (She's probably gonna cuff me for this when she comes back in the room ^^) If there is anything anyone can tell me about to further help those that were thrown into that situation from the hurricane please PLEASE tell me.
