Hello!  I just joined this community, and I can't express how utterly happy it makes me that there is an entire community devoted to all the lovely people with curly/wavy hair!  Anywho, my hair is due for a cut because it is becoming ridiculously long.

I have semi-thick wavy/curly hair. I'm looking to add some shape to my hair with layers and long side swept bangs while keeping my hair past shoulder length (if my hair is any shorter, it becomes poofy). I have a side part, and my face is heart-shaped.  I'm absolutely terrible at verbally describing what I want to the hair stylist (I learned this the hard way), so I definitely need a picture!  Does anyone know what I'm looking for?

Thanks! :)

hello! I'm looking for some advice from fellow curly haired people... I have very thick, wavy hair. it doesn't frizz very much but it is really poofy. I have some nice soft curls around my face, but the top layer of my hair is kind of flat. Its pretty long(almost to the middle of my back)but the underside still curls perfectly well. I was wondering if there were any products I could use to make it curlier (but not crunchy) I only started wearing it curly a few months ago, so I don't really have a routine. all I do is wash it  and  scrunch  in some mousse, which seems to make it a little less poofy, which is definitely better. so any ideas of products I could use would be greatly appreciated. sorry for the long post, and thank you!

edit: I only comb my hair in the shower when its covered in conditioner, and I use giovanni shampoo(no sulfates) every other day. I tried the curly girl method but it didn't really work for me; my hair got greasy really fast and I couldn't really just finger comb it, its too thick.

Ok, I'm doing a hair experiment and we'll see the results after it's dried. Basically, I have wavy hair that flattens at the top. My hairdresser says it flattens at the top because it's so thick but I don't believe him (Ha!). My hair has thinned out a lot since college. Anyway. My main issues are that it's not curly enough and it's too flat on top. So, here's what I did and I'll update with results when it's dried.

1. Before I washed my hair, I parted it and shampoo it while keeping the part in place. I did this cause I like an even part.

2. Shampooed with Giovani shampoo because there's no SLS or parabens in Giovani products. And, yes I know curlies are supposed to go no poo but I tried no poo and it just didn't work for me.

3. When I got out of the shower, I sprayed Jessicurl Gelebration Spray on my hair to help encourage curls. Do anyone use that product?

4. Used a diffuser to curl my hair and to put some lift at my scalp. I definitely notice the volume but my hair looks as curly as it usually does. No more curly unfortunately.

I'm not sure how it'll look when dry. But I'll definitely update.

What's your curly hair regime?

EDIT: Ok, my hair is dry now and it doesn't look any better than it normally would. The only good thing is that it's a bit more voluminous than normal but it's straight and fluffy, which I hate. Sigh. Next time I'm gonna try some of the suggestions in this post and hope for a better outcome. Thanks everyone.

I haven't had much success with either Curlfriend products or Jessicurl products. I'm hesitant to try Devacurl products since people love Jessicurl products and they didn't work for me. Any additional product rec'd would be much appreciated.

I know some of you have really curly hair, I usually only need a little srunching to get some good curls in my naturally wavy hair but I have just realized, I give up with that. I am just going to let my hair be.

It's refreshing.

I'll brush it, but that is all. Feels good not to have any fussing.

My hair is more wavy than big, bouncing curls. I find that I have to saturate it with some sort of product/serum/oil to keep the poofiness down and the waves/curls defined & separated. I still haven't found the "Holy Grail" product that is so wonderful I must buy it over and over again. Does anyone have a product they put in after washing that they just can't live without?

I have been using Redken Crystal Curls along with a serum & Redken Ringlet Curl Perfector. These products work... ok. I have to put them on when my hair is more wet than damp & also, very liberally. I like them because they don't give me a crunchy/stringy curl. However, like I said, while they work adequately, they are by no means great. I'm looking for something that has more holding power, and preferably, something I can use less of and still get a nice, held together/non-crunchy wave/curl.

So, you curly folks, what do you use to get soft/non-crunchy/held together curls??

Here's a picture so you can get a better idea of my hair type:

I'm so glad I found this community. XD I've been trying to figure out what to do with my hair forever. I know -nothing- about hair. The most I do is wash it, condition it, and brush it most of the time. I've tried straightening it before, but it doesn't get very straight, probably because I don't really know what I'm doing.

Suggestions?

So, predictably, I'm bored with my hair... and thinking about doing something with my bangs.

This is me on a curly (well, more wavy) day:

I want these bangs:

Because Zooey Deschanel is beautiful and I want to be her, right?

more me, more zooey, for perspective )

So, my question is... do you think it would flatter my face? I like how she wears them parted in the middle but also clearly has the option of wearing them straight across, I think that's a versatility I could live with... Plus sometimes I worry that the side bangs (at least when they get longer) make my face kind of... point down towards my jaw, making my face look wider. At least with straight across bangs I'd be forced to trim them more often so I could, you know, see.

The problem I posted earlier has now been solved. Thank you to everybody that suggested hair products and told me my hair was straight.

I bought Garnier Fructis Style 'Hard Gurl' gel, as well as their fortifying conditioner. It makes my hair smell like apples. I'll be playing around with other products, but for now, I'm pleased with the results.

Still a little damp...

I haven't seen so many curls (or waves) on my head since I chopped my hair off in April.

Hi, my name is Julianne, and I've got naturally curly hair. I don't do anything to it (except put gel, see inside cut) and sometimes I don't even do that.

Hi! My name is Katt and I'm so glad I found this community because I'm in need of advice from others who understand curly hair and its many... quirks.

Basically, I'm getting my hair cut this Thursday and I don't know what to do with it. I really want to try something a little more daring than I've done before, but I don't want to do anything stupid. I just entered into a very long engagement with my boyfriend and decided that I'll have one last "chop-it-all-off" cut and then start growing it out so I can have long curly locks by the time time of the wedding. Any help and advice that you can give me would be very greatly appreciated!!

Oh, and I just got a nostril stud on the left side of my nose, in case it helps with anything.

A million times THANK YOU!!

Hey all--I've been admiring everyone in this community. Beautiful hair, girls. I'm jealous.

I recently rediscovered my curly hair. I have never used specific products or weapons on it, simply let it go its own wavy/straight way. Humidity is my biggest obstacle, as I fight with the poofiness of my hair during summer months on the East Coast.

Now that I've looked through the curlyhair community and all the most recent posts, I've become very disappointed that my hair is neither curly nor straight, as if it can't decide which it would prefer to be. To most people, it looks straight from the front, and it's only when the underside of the hair is exposed that the waves and curls can be seen. I've attempted the curlygirl technique of coaxing mycurls out of hiding, but after two days of struggling with the shampoo issue (I suppose I'm the wavy type so I still need to use it occassionally), I went back to my brush. After all, I'm a waitress and I can't quite afford to go through two or three weeks of hair confusion.

I'm posting this hoping someone can help me with this indecisiveness. I apologize for you dial-up readers.

Any suggestions out there from you true curly haired girls?

QUICK! can anyone show me pictures of curly/wavy girls who have streaks/chunky highlights in their hair?

i'm getting my hair cut/dyed tomorrow, i've NEVER dyed it before, but i'm desperately bored and want something new... ideally something kind of drastic, some peroxidey not-quite-blonde streaks, kind of thick, throughout my hair.

agh i'm just really bored! help me out!

here's my hair to give you an idea of style/texture...

that's at its curliest... it's kind of damaged right now so it's not curling as much as it could. i'm getting about 3 inches off tomorrow so it'll be a few inches below my shoulders, with shorter layers up top and longer straight layers at the bottom (this is what i showed the stylist the first time i got it done and i'm basically getting a trim).

So I try and follow the advice scarfish gave me about NOT touching the top layer of my hair when I get out of the shower. It's really been an improvement on my frizzy top layer dilemma.

Random pics?

I'm Anna. I joined about a week ago and I thought I'd introduce myself. I'm fifteen. I have really wavy/kinda curly hair. When I was younger I had it long and it was HUGE because I didn't know how to take care of it. When I was twelve I got it cut pretty short and have had short hair ever since. Right now it's the longest it's been since I cut it several years ago and I'm trying to grow it out past my shoulders. I usually wash my hair at night, don't touch it and let it air dry. In the morning I use Got2Be flat-iron/blow-drying lotion and blow-dry it so that it's wavy instead of curly, then I put a bit of Matrix Sleek and Shine styling cream on it so that it's not frizzy. For about six months last year I was dying my hair black and in June I got it bleached back to my natural color (I'm a redhead). For awhile it was really damaged and felt like straw but I've been deep-conditioning religously and now the texture is back to normal. I dyed it purple two weeks ago (semipermanent) and today I got some Carrot Oil Cream that I just used and really like.

I'm pretty satisfied with my hair but I'd like a way to make it kinda curly like it was in the second picture but when I sleep on it it gets really frizzy so I use the straightening lotion and blow-dry. I've tried using Garnier Fructise Curl Cream and I like it but it makes my hair really flat and my curls are long and spiral-ey. Is there anything I can do to keep it looking good overnight? I can't wash it in the morning because when I go outside it gets rained on while I'm waiting at the bus stop (I live in Seattle) and gets really, really frizzy and doesn't dry right. The same thing happens when I just get it damp. (Sorry if this is too long.)
