Writing Challenge! (And the winner is.....)

Your mission is to write a drabble using the spring dance events as a springboard. It's simple enough...write an observation on Reg/Alice's behavior at the dance. The catch? You're writing from another character's POV! What would Jack Sparrow think while watching Reg send potential rivals running with just a look? What might Hades conclude after seeing Alice and Reg tearing up the dance floor? Or Snow White? Pick your poison. It doesn't have to be a character that's actually appeared in the comic so far - there are many in attendence and you're free to use any disney character that strikes your fancy.

Post your drabbles as comments right here and have fun with it! Remember to keep it between a G and PG-13 rating. We will accept entries for the next 5 days. After those 5 days have passed everyone will be invited to vote for their favorite by adding a suitable comment 'got my vote' to the drabble in question. (Voters must have an LJ to prevent ballot stuffing.)

The author with the most votes will be treated to an early sneak peek at a single spoileriffic panel from the upcoming segment (the final dance scene.) The author will of course be expected to keep the contents of that panel to themselves. ;)

So..uh..yeah. Go on now, do your thing. :p

___________________________

The votes have been tallied and our winner is Kay147's Finding Nemo-inspired drabble! Contact us at PurpleSquirrel27@aol.com to see that sneak-peek panel we promised, Kay. :)

Though I don't have a LJ and I might never, I've been following this comic for a couple of months at least.

And I must say it's fantastic.

Also, as a writer, I take this as a challenge :P Which I will just keep to myself with no LJ.

But I do look forward to all the other entries that will pop up.

You 2 keep up the great work you got going, and Bri, good luck on the job! I too am searching for one *poop*.

Just wrote this in one sitting, so it's unbeta-ed. I tried my best to get into her character, but it's been a while since I've watched this particular Disney movie, and I wasn't too sure of how much she had changed in this universe. Ah, well. Here's my try at it:

"I wish I could have said that she was ugly. That she was a mean and spiteful girl, out to attract all the attention of the boys and leave the rest of us here hanging about like outgrown toys, left to sit forlornly in the dusty corners of the nursery.

But I didn't. First, I was raised to be a proper English lady, and proper English ladies do not speak spitefully about their fellow ladies (well, at least not in public). Second, because I didn't really mean it. Alice is a perfectly nice girl, if only a bit too curious for her own good, but then, who am I to speak? She is a dear friend, my dear friend, and I know that she would not do anything to intentionally hurt the feelings of others.

Third, perhaps I was just a tiny bit jealous. After all, I came here, all dressed up for him, only to find him all over her like ... Like he did with Tigerlily. Or the mermaids. Or ... All right, I was very jealous. But it is a perfectly normal feeling, right? To want to be noticed by him, to have him see me, and only me?

Perhaps he will never understand. After all, I am only just a Wendy to him, always there to take care of the boys when he wants to go adventuring by himself, or sew his shadow when it manages to escape from him again ...

But, then again ... Am I not his Wendy?

Perhaps Father will sleep on the couch tonight."

I apologize for that last sentence, but the idea was too tempting to resist. *goes into hiding*

Everyone thinks I’m just so sweet and good tempered. Nothing gets Cindy mad. Hell, if I had my way, I'd use my stupid slipper to bash in her pretty little blond head. I’ve heard glass can be pretty hard, if it’s blown just right. Besides, I just KNOW she dyes it to try and be like me.

But noooo, I have to be the nice girl, the charming princess to go with the charming prince. All he’s done all night is drink too much wine, and dance with that hussy Maid Marion. She’s a fricking FOX, for the love of Pete! And I’ve stood here against the terrace, watching Reggie dance with Alice, that beautiful smile on her face, that makes me want to cry with envy and wish their dance would never end.

It’s not like I want to marry the man; I know his reputation well enough. I just wish I could have one more fling before I tie the knot and who better than Reggie? I never knew, when I said I wanted to go to the ball, just how much that would entail.

All I’ve heard since he put the stupid shoe on my foot is how great I’ll be at directing the servants at the castle, how good my cooking will be when he ‘lets me play peasant’ in the kitchens. I don’t WANT to be maid anymore! Not even a head one, not even a CEO of cleanliness. I want to be free to write, or paint, or, or, or be a professional sky-diver! Anything that lets me be free and unfettered, free to be myself.

I suppose I’m just jealous; everyone knows Alice does what she wants, doesn’t let people push her around. Maybe I just wish I could be like that; not let people use me. Maybe . . . I just want to be like her.
----------------
Notes: Written at five AM on no sleep, please excuse. Also, I was going more for feminist angst than funny, sorry if that’s a downer. AS WELL, I don’t recall if Cinderella has been featured in the story yet, and how she was envisioned if so, but this is just a real quick one for the contest. I’ll write a better one, I swear.

My spell-check thinks this is written at a fifth grade level. Go figure.

Quickly thrown together when I should rightly be in bed as I have a drive ahead of me later in the day. Takes place between parts 2 and 3.

---

Lumiere's giving me a look again. Except more so than the last twenty looks. I wouldn't indulge him but then, well, haggling is so much fun as is the action the man has tasked me with.

Finally Reg has managed to pry himself away from his petite fille- not that he's to be blamed, as lovely as the child is. I must remember to ask her if she'd care to dance with Esmeralda come next Feast of Fools.

There's that look again. Fine, fine, I'm on my way. "Reginald!" The hatter spins around in surprise to find himself in an embrace. "Mon ami!" A kiss on each cheek and he's wiping his face with his sleeves like a fool. Oh, how can someone not see why I enjoy making others uncomfortable?

"I almost didn't believe that you'd come this year, Reginald," I say, slinging a long arm about his shoulders, "but there's something that I want to show you and I figured if you actually did show, then it would be awfully terrible if I didn't have it for you to see, no?"

"Ah, yes." He gives a worn, half smile. "Could this wait another time? I'm in the middle of refi-"

"Tut tut! This will take but a moment of your time!" Lumiere is paying dearly for sending me out to get this in the middle of my extra-fun time (even if this is somewhat fun in its own right). "Behold!" I whip my other hand out, displaying it with great flourish. "Something what only another connoisseur of hats would appreciate!"

"Clopin, this really isn't- oooooh! Is that a golden eagle feather? How rare!"

"You have good eyes, dear Reginald, as one would suspect. It took a little mousy persuasion, but I manage to procure a feather for this very chapeau." And there goes Lumiere to make his move on the unsuspecting Alice. Poor child. If only the idea of the next Feast of Fools being held at Beast's castle weren't so tempting or, should Lumiere fail to grant us that, the servant allowing himself to be used towards whatever purpose we choose in the opening festivities (and, oh, we have such plans!). "Here," Reg's attention is kept from wandering as I pull on a small string hidden in the brim, "is where the clock is set to mark tea time!"

"And when is that?"

"Why, any time you wish my good man!"

"Ingenious!"

Oh, honey, watch yourself, was Megara's first thought when she spotted Alice on the arm of none other than the Mad Hatter himself. She snuck a quick glance at Hercules to help tamp down the bad memories the couple had stirred up. He caught the glance of course, and gave her one of those smiles that were so different from the smiles he gave everyone else. It helped a lot, but didn't stop the flush of relief that rose when she took in Alice's obvious discomfort under the Hatter's megawatt attentions. Thank Zeus, she's got a brain in her head. Hang on to it, girl, not everybody gets a Wonder Boy.

Thanks, that was fun!

I honestly don't understand it, this preoccupation with Reginald and Alice, especially among the girls. Well, I suppose I wouldn't, now would I? I just see the two as a cute couple. I do hope that he doesn't hurt her, though- when I trilled, 'Ooh, tell her!', it was out of a sense of duty. After all, I like Alice, just like I liked Kida, and Mulan... And Marianne, before Reginald got his hands on them. Of course, when she insulted my prince- our princes- it was a bit irritating, even if it's true.

I don't suppose I'm old enough to really care that Prince what's-his-face is a generic prince-type. I didn't really have much time to dwell on it, though- Aroura, offended, stalked off when I didn't joing her in bashing Alice. Across the room, I saw Reginald's shoulders go up, hands out, palms up- typical 'What did I do?' gesture. Alice looked absolutely furious. I wondered what he did... Reginald held his hands apart, almost as if to indicate a measurement, and Alice's face softened a little bit. Oh, dear, she IS falling for him, isn't she...

I didn't really see what happened next- Prince returned from dancing with whatever bimbo he'd picked up [Isn't he supposed to be my prince?] and tried to get me out on the dance floor... I hate dancing. Luckily for me, he was obviously drunk and sloshed off to go solicit the attention of other girls again. I returned to watching Alice in time to see her blush as Reggie pulled her out on the dance floor. Which returns me to my original point, as the girls cluster together, watching them and whispering vehemently... I truly don't understand it...

But I suppose I will, eventually. I am, after all, only fourteen.

[I'm terribly, terribly sorry. I just woke up, and it occured to my sleep-addled brain when I saw this that I've always wanted to write a drabble with Snow White and prod at the fact that her dear prince is commiting STATUTORY. Fourteen, man. Other than that, I hope this hasn't made your eyes bleed too much. XDDD I had fun writing it.]

Well this is quite baffling situation this is. Reggie's going after a bit o' skirt thats not tarted up like a Tortugan... uh.... erm... tart. Wonder what he's playing at this time.

Blast this party's dull. Time to spice it up I think. Damn, wheres the rum gone. Reggie, you know that measurement is by far much too small, but then again, if you're trying to capture a ladies interest, offering a tour of one's boat is customary, but I was sure you had more than just a rowboat, lad. Ah! Theres my rum, and now, the punch bowl. After all this is a dangerous mission, but I'll accomplish it just fine. After all, I'm Captain Jack Sparrow.

Right *cracks knuckles* A challenge! I never back away from a challenge. Unless, of course, I'm busy with something else or just don't feel like it. But anyway...

'...like every other prince in the realm.' The words kept making rounds in Aurora's head, spinning back to poke at her brain like a child taunting an animal, getting only close enough to make contact, but skittering back before one could take a well-deserved swipe at it.

What did Alice think she was playing at, anyway? It wasn't like she was even a princess, though she did look as pretty as one in that dress, Aurora was secure enough to admit that. But to insult her wonderful Phillip! Look at him over there, chatting with Robin Hood...wait, no, that was Cinderella's prince, whatever his name was. Right, there he was, sipping punch and having a heated debate with the prince formerly known as Beast...no, still wrong, that was Snow's Prince Charming.

Huh. Now that she really looked, the princes did all have something of a resemblance, with the same strong jaw and rather...ahem...blank expression half of the time. Compared to them Reg was something of a marvel (of course, Reg was a marvel in and of himself, as he would be only happy to point out if he was asked) when set against a backdrop of princes. He stood out, which was something, she supposed. What that was, she had no idea, she only hoped it wasn't contagious.

And oh, she still couldn't find Phillip. Where had he gotten to? Sigh. Perhaps Alice really did have something of a point. Aurora also thought it might be wise to invest in some kind of name-tag system...

He hadn't planned on coming to the dance this evening, but there had been a series of fortuitous circumstances (well, losing that bet to Barbossa wasn't fortuitous, but still...) that had led him to the Plaza Gardens.

Even still, he'd been having a good time. Esmeralda... oh, now there was a lovely bird. And he hadn't even gotten slapped yet! (That might be a new record, Jackie. Well done!)

But there was definitely something missing from the evening's festivities, which Jack realized as soon as he had a sip of punch, which he promptly spit back out. "BUT WHERE IS THE RUM?!?!?” He cried, eying the punch bowl suspiciously. Here, then, was a travesty that should be corrected right away. Jack slipped away quietly, and snuck back around the dance floor to the other side of the refreshment table. He looked around carefully, and drew a large bottle of rum (what good pirate didn’t travel with his own bottle?), but paused before pouring it into the bowl.

The poor Hatter (who was one of the few people Jack knew who was more insane than himself) was in some sort of argument with that tall Frenchie guy. Glancing around, Jack saw the reason in a pretty blonde girl currently chatting with two other lovely ladies. “Ah,” Jack thought to himself. “Alice, of course.

Jack watched with detached interest as Reg made short work of Frenchie, but then was swept into a conversation by Hades himself. “Oh, you’re in for it now, Reg,” thought Jack, as he carefully poured the rum into the bowl. “I’ve had conversations with Hades that lasted for weeks on end! Or maybe it just felt like weeks. Ah well!” and he slipped off into the evening, glad that he had at least made the punch a little more interesting.

"Good Lord. Jezebell, look! That beastly man is doing it again!"
"Yes, I see him, Lady Tremaine. Such a ghastly preformance, don't you think?"
"I agree," she sniffed, disdainfully watching Mr. Theophilis twirl a young blond across the dance floor. Lady Tremaine took a sip of her tea and sat up a little straighter to keep an eye on them. Though how her back could have gotten any straighter without breaking Jezebell would never know.
"At least he left off that vulgar hat this time," Jezebell said in between sips of her own tea. "That thing was a disgrace to the eye and this fine celebration." She pulled a small hand mirror out of her sleeve and admired herself for a few moments, making sure her crown was straight and not a hair was escaping out of the hood she wore over it.
"I could not agree with you more, Jezebell." Lady Tremaine put down her cup and saucer on the low table between them, taking a cookie from the plate and biting into it delicately. A few crumbs escaped and were instantly taken away by clothed mice, making her scowl and brush at her burgandy dress, afraid they had left footprints on the fabric. "And how could these young women be so swayed by his antics? Look over there!" She pointed to where a Gypsy woman sat with a white-haired girl who was covered in savage tattoos and was obviously inebriated. Both were staring at Mr. Theophilis like he was a side of meat and they were starving. Jezebell sneered at that and turned her head away, Lady Tremaine following suit.
"How crude. They could do so much better than that flamboyant giggolo."
"I agree," Lady Tremaine said and took another sip of her tea. "That girl had better watch herself before she gets pulled into his trap."
"Not that there's anything wrong with that, he's a perfectly capable lov-" Jezebell clapped one hand over her mouth, wide eyed and embaressed by her admission while Lady Tremaine looked scandalized.
"Jezebell! You too?!"
"Well, since I am the Fairest one of All..." Jezebell smirked and calmly took a sip of her tea, Lady Tremaine still looking shocked beyond all reason.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Props to whoever knows these two ladies. I admit to taking some liberty with Jezebell, but I thought the name fit her rather well.
"No, it was me! I brought the rum!"
"NOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!" yelled Jack as he stuck his sword through, erm, himself. Or at least one of himselves. "My peanut."
He munched on his well-deserved peanut as he scoped out the dance. "Let's see, who's here..... There's Will and Elizabeth. Hmmm....It's a wonder they let him come to this, really. Ah! Scarlet!" He watched the world turn to the left as she slapped him across the face. "Not sure I deserved that. Hey! There's Ana Maria! Perhaps she'd like a twirl or two..." He strolled over toward the refreshment table, then ducked behind it as he noticed two men having a bit of a tiff over a girl. In french, at that. 'Ah, that's Reginald. I should warn him, women are fickle and should not be trusted.....Oooh, punch. Perhaps I can contribute to this party more than I thought.' He looked around to see that no one was watching him, then upended one of his bottles of rum in the punchbowl. 'That should make things a bit more interesting here. Hmmm... And I think I shall have to have some of it now.'
“Dad.”
“Yeah, son?”
“Where do babies come from?”
The single father clenched his….gills. On the corner of the evening’s festivities, a rather large fish tank stood host to all underwater attendees who came to grace the evening with their aquatic charm. Among the turn out, two small clown fish floated in the corner closest to the dance floor, observing the coming together (and accompanying facial expressions) of two very, very different people.
Marlin, get a hold of yourself. This was bound to happen. It was bound to happen!
Big deep drink. Ahhh.
“Well you see, Nemo, when two people-,”
“And fish,” interrupted Nemo.
“Yes, and fish,” Marlin reinstated, “when they love each other very much, they decided when it is the right time to start a family, and then they….” Marlin. Say it! The boy has a right to know! No, no, he’s too young. Too young.
Nemo fanned his lucky fin. “Sandy Plankton said that when you rub bellies together for a long time, a baby comes out from the girl’s fins.” Nemo’s eyes search his fathers for correction.
Was that English? That’s sort of correct. That’ll do. Yes, I think that will do just swimmingly for now.
“Yes, Nemo. You’re absolutely correct,” a wave of relief came over the single-parent fish.
Nemo’s large eyes wandered over to Alice and the Hatter.
“Any minute now, Dad, watch! The Hatter and Alice have been rubbing bellies for a solid ten minutes. Any moment now a baby will drop from her... Where are her fins, Dad? I think they’re under her--,”
“NEMO!”
I don't really have an account here, but this is something I certainly cannot pass. :3
~( )~
I watched as people swayed to the up beat background music, a smile spread across my face. It may have seemed odd to a few. Walking by to see only a smile floating there without a body.
I would’ve been scared myself, except it was normal for me. It may have been stranger when they saw me completely. A cat smiling? That’s impossible! Nothing’s impossible in this realm. A smiling Cheshire Cat is a fine example for the matter.
I’ve heard many rumors of the realms citizen, the March Hare, on how my dear friend the hatter was going after a young maiden. Alice was her name, how beautiful she has grown.
I can’t help but feel… what’s the word? Ah yes. Jealous. That’s the word.
I sigh deeply and let myself appear in front of the eyes of a couple. They simply smiled towards me. My grin was still plastered on my face.
There was a commotion. Giving a laugh I let my paws move towards the front of the crowd. An upbeat song began to play. I couldn’t help but sway slightly to the music. Such a catchy song it was. I should ask the men if they may play it once more for me.
Once up in front of the crowd I couldn’t help but let my amused face turn in to a face of pure curiosity. “Well I never-“ I over heard a couple of people murmur.
They were just mad that the wonderful Alice wasn’t dancing with them. For the ladies on the other hand, they envied the girl for stealing such a well-groomed man. I loved it when this happened.
Hearing the music die down and everyone heading to seats to relax I watched Alice wrap her arm on the hatter’s arm. Maybe she was tired. Who knew?
I certainly do.
It was getting late for me. I needed to take my nap. At least I know I will be able to sleep tonight without nightmares of disturbing sights tonight’s dance.
Esmerelda digs the Hat.
The striking Gypsy woman was having quite a time with Kida...particularly now that the young warrior-woman had gotten into Captain Jack's "enhanced" punch. Pulling knives from who-knows-where, Kida kept trying to pick fights with anyone who made eye-contact with her. Esmerelda ket calmly snatching them from Kida's hands [or teeth, or feet...] and secreting them upon her own person. Finally, Kida had zonked out, and Esmerelda felt truly blest. She sank into a chair just in time to watch Hades schmoozing Reginald. Reg seemed utterly oblivious to Hades' rambling, looking desperatly around the room. When his eyes caught their target, Esmerelda followed his gaze...although she knew exactly who he had been searching out. Alice.
Esmerelda sighed as Kida grumbled in her drink-induced nap. Reggie. He had been an interesting conquest [oh yes, he thought he had been the one to court HER, but really it was the other way around.] She had thought his features interesting rather than attractive...and his voice, with its treble tones and occasional lisp, were not exactly what she enjoyed when talking to a man.
It was The Hat that had won her over.
She had never quite figured it out until now. The only reason she had ever gotten into the relationship with Reg was because of The Hat. She thought it was adorable. Couldn't resist him whilst he wore it. Only now, when she saw him without it, was she able to realize that it had never really been Reg at all that she was interested in. Just...well, just The Hat.
Esmerelda sipped her wine and let her mind and gaze wander. Of course, she had enjoyed her time with Reginald. He was attentive, funny, and good with his hands...as a hatmaker, of course. But it was The Hat that really made him attractive to her.
She caught sight of Phoebus across the room. He was wearing his uniform...with his helmet. Hmm...
Esmerelda watched the light of the disco ball glint off the shiny metal of Phoebus' helmet. She drained the last of her wine and strode over to demand a dance...so long as he left his hat on...
He looked at the dance floor carefully, not missing a single detail with his one good eye. The other one rolled pathetically, trying to keep up with its counterpart. He spied a couple dancing frantically to the swing music being played. He smiled to himself, almost jealous.
“Why don’t we ever dance loik that?” He ask his shorter companion, pointing to the couple.
“Cos we ain’t crazy nutters wit a hat fetish, tha’s why,” Pintel answered gruffly. Ragetti pouted and relaxed in his chair on the sidelines.
They always came to the dance, of course. It was practically mandatory. The problem was, however, that Pintel never wanted to dance or do anything. Ragetti was disappointed by this; he longed to be on that dance floor, just like that couple.
“’Oo are they, Pinters?”
“It’s that Mad ‘Atter an’ Alice, ye dolt. ‘Ow do ye not know tha’?” He glared steadily at the lanky pirate.
“’M sorry, it’s just that we’re always in that cave, protectin’ th’ treasure an’ I don’ git te see much of anyone…”
“Whot’s Sparrow doin’ at th’ food table?” Pintel squinted to try to make out the captain’s movement. He recognized the action after a minute; Jack was spiking the punch! “Oy, we’re getting’ some punch, Rags,” Pintel pulled Ragetti out from his chair and straight across the dance floor.
Ragetti kept watching Alice and Reg dancing their hearts out to the fast-paced swig music.
“Lucky buggers,” He sighed.
Can we use Calypso/Tia Dalma or Davy Jones? Or 'dead' (in the movie) villains like say... Gaston? Or animals like Koda or Scar? And lastly: can we use characters such as Minnie or Mickey?
oops I noticed you wanted it in comment form so I'll post it up here. Just in case I am disqualifed for posting a link to it.
Try to guess who I picked :D
Where is he? I had just saw him two minutes ago we were having so much fun playing follow the leader. The cool breeze hitting my delicate face- I turned around for a minute and he had taken off. OH! OH! Is that? Yes it's that Alice girl, and Peter is talking to her! What is he saying? I'll fly closer...
" I think you'll be my happy thought tonight."
What? What did he say! How can Peter say something like that... and to THAT girl. Poor me. He used to be my Peter but now for some reason they always seem to hit on him. THEY KNOW HE IS MY PETER! First the mermaids, then that awful Wendy! Oh how I long to pull out all her hair, then she won't be pretty...and now Alice! He has never said anything like that to me... wait a minute, he has never said anything like that to Wendy either... could...could Peter be?... No! No! No! He can't be *gasp* Why Alice? Why Alice! Reggie! I'll get Reggie he'll take care of this. Where is he! There- he is talking to Hades... I better be careful Hades dosnt see me, or he will swat me like a fly- on purpose- I Made it! Now how to get Reggie's attention? I know I'll pull his hair in their direction. See Reggie look, look Alice! Wait! Reggie what are you doing? Why do you have that knife?... Reggie NO!! PETER! PETER! LOOK OUT! You horrid horrid beast! How dare you! How dare you!!... Is she is leaving him? She is coming over this way? Reggie your wonderful! Oh I can just kiss you! You have saved the day! I shall go over and ask Peter for a dance... it will be lovely, and he will see that I am the only girl for him...forever and ever and ever. Huh? Peter? Where did he go?
