Little batch of birthday cupcakes

  • Dec. 6th, 2009 at 11:02 AM
My oldest friend asked for zodiac signs cupcakes for her birthday, but as I only made a batch of six cupcakes I could not include all twelve signs. So I just went with only her own one:

I am making cupcakes for a very small baby shower. Any ideas? I'm not going to do a lot of decorating, but I do want something other than regular old cake and buttercream. Any ideas?

Monsters Inc cupcakes

  • Dec. 3rd, 2009 at 12:15 AM

I was really thrilled when I got this order, because I'm a huge fan of Monsters Inc! The client requested for Monsters Inc theme, so I came up with fondant toppers of the main 3 characters. The message colours were blue and white, in light of the colours of the Monsters Inc logo :) I really wanted to do justice to Boo's cuteness, and tried my hardest. I'm super glad that the sweet client, along with the recipient, loved the cupcakes :)

More photos on my foodblog, and after the jump.

irish carbomb cupcakes

  • Dec. 1st, 2009 at 9:48 AM
so I NEED to make these. this is a request from a friend who is moving away and I really want to make them for her going away party. I found a recipe for guinness cupcakes with baileys frosting.. all it needs is some jameson to make it a carbomb! so what do you cupcake genisises think? should I add some to the cake itself or the frosting? I'm thinking if added to the frosting it might be REALLY boozy frosting... which isn't nessicarly a bad thing. I've included the recipe under the cut if you wanna gander at it to get your best professional opinions :]

Adventures in Marzipan!

  • Nov. 29th, 2009 at 3:43 PM
Thanks so much to those of you who responded to my post last month asking for decorating suggestions. I had a GREAT time exploring the possibilities of marzipan, and wanted to post some photos of my success!

Have a look-see! )
My only problem with marzipan is that when I painted it, rather than dyeing it, the food coloring wouldn't dry. This was particularly a problem with the records; people's mouths got rather blackened from eating them. Any suggestions on how to avoid that problem? I'm not too concerned with most colors, but the black really just wouldn't have come out right without painting it on!

Cotton Candy Cupcakes

  • Nov. 17th, 2009 at 2:18 PM
I checked the tags for this and even looked online but couldn't find anything that really was cotton candy favored. So my question is this;

If I use white cake mix and added like a Go-Gurt Cool Cotton Candy yogurt into the mix would that do anything to cake? Would it still rise? Would the taste still be there? What about if adding a Go-Gurt to the icing?

Any answers would be awesome thanks!

Problems with frosting

  • Nov. 8th, 2009 at 6:44 AM
I got a frosting recipe here for buttercream frosting. It calls for one stick of butter, one 8-ounce package of cream cheese, about 1/8 cup buttermilk, vanilla extract, and a normal-sized package of confectioner's sugar. I think of the 5 or so times I've used the recipe, only once did it turn out stiff enough to hold its shape.

Click here to see ) how my frosting turned out. In particular, check out the border at the bottom of the cake. Those were supposed to be shells, but they got all melty! I mean, eventually the frosting hardened, but I would've liked for the border to have the shell shape.

Anyway, since I got the recipe from here a while ago, I figured I'd ask here how I should go about stiffening up my homemade frosting. I want it to hold its shape!

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance! :)
This year's halloween was the first time I'm "celebrating" it. I've been lucky to have friends who are game enough to dress up to the nines and suit up with the best costume they can think of, and in return I wanted to bake something fun and freaky for them.

So, for that I give you...
