The old war protest song “Fortunate Son” be Creedence Clearwater Revival has lyrics that hint at the class differences between people….whatever happened to those songs? This song by CCR was very popular (maybe number 2 on the billboard charts)…but these days what popular songs address class differences as well as this one?  I am bit surprised at the lack of songs that address issues of class (or society in general).  I am not a child of the 60s or 70s, but a part of me admires the people of those decades who produced and consumed such politically relevant material.

umm lack of a war involving a draft is actually one reason as well as a couple of other reasons that music as a whole is not exploding the way it did back then.

now, for class discussion in music you really have to look at the UK for bands that address that. Since class conciousness and class structures are more in their public conciousness than it is in the states.

...you're absolutely right...we don't think about how much money and family background determine things...the rich get richer here and keep on bending the rule books to make sure they get even more, and we don't seem to notice. Actually, we glorify it. Kinda strange.

My friend, what we know of class effects on society (in america) is probably one of the most classless countries on this planet. The middle east, the UK, parts of Europe all have heavily influential class structures or conciousnesses. India alone is... mind boggling.

as far as getting to the top from the bottom, well you can always look at the kennedy model... from irish-catholic (then racially discriminated against)criminal backgrounds (grandad was a booze smuggler / gangster) to the political dynasty we have today.

The Us has a very different geo-political and socio-economic reality from the rest of the world and definately from the old world (including asia). Most of our ideas of class struggle were created by eurocentric intelligentsia and are not entirely applicable though the rhetoric has been repeated so much it is bought into as practically a law of nature.

It's neither though it is a valid look at old world power structures and has some applicability, it is not universal.

CCR has been one of myt favourite bands since i was about 5. they have taught me much about how to be happy with nothing, and now i live a fairly non-materialistic life and couldn't be happier

there is popular political music happening - Rage against the Machine, Public Enemy come to mind - but race seems to have largely displaced class as focal point. My first time in Europe I was surprised at how much people identify with class there - it reminded me of the way people identify with race in the US. Both are more extreme than is healthy, IMO
