The Gender Public Advocacy Coalition is pleased to announce the release of its 2008 GENIUS Survey in partnership with Ernst & Young. GenderPAC works to ensure that classrooms, communities and workplaces are safe for everyone to learn, grow and succeed.
The Gender Equality National Index for Universities & Schools (GENIUS), GenderPAC’s most recent effort to end discrimination and promote awareness, encourages colleges and universities to recognize the benefits of a GenderSAFE campus - supportive equitable and protective for all students. Choosing to participate in GENUIS sends a strong public statement that bullying or discriminating based on the race, sex or gender of a student, faculty, or staff member is not tolerated at your institution
Fill out the survey at: www.gpac.org/GENIUS2008survey, and make sure that we have data for as many schools as possible. Your voice will help us continue to work towards a safe and welcoming environment for every student | | Thursday, May 29th, 2008 | 7:27 pm [ivarrr]

New cultural practices on Internet and institutionnalisation Hello guys. It's my first real post here so first glad to see there are some sociologist around ! I'm in my fifth year at the University of Rouen, in France. I'm doing my Master dissertation about the new cultural practices on Internet. My global question is : Is Internet creating new forms of institutionalisation of cultural consommation goods ? At the beginning, I've thought I would do some interviews with people who are webmasters of some illegal websites but it's ways too hard to find someone who accept to talk about that. I've succeed with some but not enough. The problem that I encouter the most is that people don't know me and are a bit afraid. If you know someone (or maybe you) who seed files illegally, do subtitles, is particularly active in a private trackers website, or do trackers for the others. Please can you give him (her) the few questions I put below? Current Mood: hopeful | | Sunday, April 20th, 2008 | 5:48 pm [stiletto_freek]

a study of American culture Hallo, I'm new to this community. I'm a Russian who studies American culture. I'm working on my postgrad thesis in lingvoculturology and I'm asking you for help.
IF YOU ARE FROM THE USA AND YOU ARE A NATIVE SPEAKER, please help me (it's terribly difficult to find an American here in Russia and make him/her answer the questions :))).
Please, give a detailed example – like a scene from a movie, a book or from life - of a situation when a person is having fun. Give your AGE, please.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR HELP! | | Friday, December 14th, 2007 | 5:03 pm [nephew1983]

South Korea I'm thinking of going to South Korea for a year to gig in Seoul, and to teach English. As anyone ever been to Korea before? I was there for about 14 hours in 2003 on a layover from Thailand. I got to see downtown Seoul briefly but that was very brief. Obviously living there for a year would be a different experience. I've been trying to sift through various teaching opportunities that have come my way in search of the best deal.

Greetings,
I'm new to this community so I figured I'd say hello. I'm a musician with a degree in sociology who is looking to connect. I'm into meeting open minded people. I'm still liberal as hell and am into counter culture. I'm into music, traveling, politics, freaky and deviant behavior, philosophy, art, cultural experiences, and experience in general. There is always lots to talk about. I recently returned from Spain and Morroco to record some music with the psych jazz jam group Aashram. Check it out if you like. Drop me a line sometime.
Much positive energy your way,
-J

TITULUS CRUCIS In 1492, a dramatic discovery was made in the course of repairs to a mosaic in Church of Santa Croce in Gerusalemme (Rome): a brick inscribed with the words TITULUS CRUCIS (Title of the Cross). Sealed behind the brick was a fragment of an inscription in wood, with the word «Nazarene» written in Hebrew, Greek and Latin.
. . . . . . . . . . הנצ . . . . . . . . . . . . B SUNERAZAN SI . . . . . R SVNIRAZAN.I
[ישו] הנצ[רי מלק היהודים] [NWIADUOI NWT SUELISA] B SUNERAZAN SI [MVROEADVI XE]R SVNIRAZAN.I
This Title is mentioned in all four Gospels accounts: Pilate also wrote a title (joltit-John 19:19) and put it on the cross; it read, «Jesus of Nazareth, the King of the Jews». Many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Christ was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, in Latin, and in Greek (John 19:19-20; also Matthew 27:37; Mark 15:26; Luke 23:38). | | Monday, July 30th, 2007 | 11:04 pm [igotahalo]

950th jubilee celebration of the world - famous Ostromir Gospel 950th jubilee celebration of the world - famous Ostromir Gospel
On May, 12th, 2007 950 years from that day when the scribe deacon Gregory has written on parchment aprakos Gospel Book for the city governor (posadnik) of Novgorod, Ostromir (hence the name of the book), were executed exactly. In the Institute of the Russian language named after V.V. Vinogradov (Russian Academy of Sciences) took place Cyrillo-Methodianum Readings, dedicated to the anniversary of the the earliest dated East Slavic book.
Addressing to opening of ceremonial session of the Academic Council of the Institute of the Russian language, corresponding member of Russian Academy of Sciences A.M. Moldovan has noted, that the anniversary forum reflects that interest which the Ostromir Gospel represents for historians, philologists, art critics and representatives of other areas of scientific knowledge. In the reports presented on Readings the new data about this unique manuscript have been reflected.
E.M. Vereschagin's report (Institute of the Russian language) has been devoted to the value of the Ostromir Gospel for a modern condition of Russian literary language. According to the lecturer, this earliest surviving dated Russian handwritten book remains a tuning fork of Russian literary language.
In E.S. Smirnova's report (The State Institute of art-critique) "The niniatures of the Ostromir Gospel: features of a composition" have been offered the art criticism analysis with the attraction of the Caroling’s analogies, allowed to draw a conclusion about the West-European sources of the unique miniatures of this monument.
O.G. Uliyanov (St. Andrey Rublev’s Central Museum of Ancient Russian Culture and Art) in the report placed for doubt the existing opinion on the primary acceptance in the Russian Church of the worship rules of Constantinople origins. Based on the example of the Menologium of the Ostromir Gospel the lecturer has cited the new data, which attest to the fact that Russian divine service in the end of X - the middle of XI centuries has tested essential influence of the Jerusalem Holy Sepulchre Typicon. The source of the liturgical tradition of the Russian Church, by O.G.Ulyanov's opinion, became the Patriarchate of Antioch.
In a finishing part of the forum it has noted been, that though the Ostromir Gospel is located in the field of the sight of scientists already more than 200 years, it is far from studied; therefore the future promises to us still numerous scientific discoveries. The Private Revolution Here is a thought I was spinning back and forth in my mind last night, while I was trying to fall asleep. I have been noticing a connection between all new kinds of urbanite, modern trends or, to phrase it more intellectually valid, development. Web 2.0 (still can’t get used to that name, but I guess no one seems to): blogs, camera phones, homemade videos showing you at your absolute worst but no one seems to mind … moving on to street art and all the way past Jackass and the philosophy behind skateboarding and graffiti on to parkour, reality television and how Kate Moss doing cocaine and Paris Hilton having sex on cameras and screen all over the world can actually help their careers. What I am seeing is people taking the public and making it private, taking the private and making it public. We have already played around with gender roles which led us, pretty determined to what we have now: the deconstruction and jumbling of personal identity. Tic-tacs in ShoreditchWhere are the boundaries of your public, breathing self, your public, virtual self (which usually turns out to be a caricature of both public and private selves through the means of youtube, myspace, facebook, comments on webpages, imdb, etc.), your private virtual self (e-mails, private messages, “friends only” journals, anonymous blogs, etc.), your private personal self and your public personal self? Where do they overlap? Do they? Or do they all form one final creature that you see as yourself now? Street art is the advancement of graffiti onto a broader audience with political, social, and artistic undertones made obvious to most untrained pedestrians. Parkour is the same as skateboarding, just with fewer restrictions. And all of these are contributing to our re-evaluation of public and personal selves and spaces. What do you think about this theory? I appreciate every comment. They make me sleep better. | | Monday, February 5th, 2007 | 7:34 pm [bieniara]

Hi There !
I am an undergrad student who is currenly searching for articles for an essay. We had to choose our own topics, and as a result the amount of sources has been sparse.
My topic will analyze popular media sharing services, specifically that of YouTube and Flickr. I am interested in examining issues of amateur vs professional, autobiography and memory, issues of agency within online culture, and how all of the above fits into concepts of post-modernity.
I am wondering if anyone has read or knows of any journals that focus upon similar issues. I've spent the past two days looking through academic databases for articles, and have only come across a small handful.
Please and Thank you!! | | Friday, February 2nd, 2007 | 1:11 pm [kyooverse]

What Place Does Race Have in Sports? By Derek Jennings, AlterNet. Posted February 2, 2007. Why it matters that two black coaches will be in the Super Bowl this year.By the time the Indianapolis Colts meet the Chicago Bears in the Super Bowl on Sunday -- that unofficial yet quintessential American holiday -- I'm sure that most of us surface-dwellers will have been apprised of the added significance of this one. Never before has any African American head coach taken a football team to the Super Bowl, yet this year, we will have two black coaches facing each other with the NFL championship on the line. Some will cheer the prospect, some will sigh and say "its about time," some will deny that the event holds any relevance or significance, while others will be actively pissed off about the whole thing, wondering why the media has to make a big deal about 'minority' coaches when the league is almost 70 percent black. That latter group intrigues me. As a black man and former collegiate football player, I've always been absolutely fascinated at the intersection of race and sport. Having heard the fanfare, and experienced on the one hand the almost childlike idealism we attach to these games and, on the other, observed the double standards and encroachment of our pervasive societal psychoses onto even this, our seemingly most sacred of public spaces, I can't help but take notice.
