On Janaury 20, 1985 Nils Liedholm fielded a 16 year old youngster with a famous last name against Udinsese and Italian football asked: ’How good is Cesar’s son?"
More than 500 appearances later he has been crucial to the most successful era in Milan's history; a sackful of silverware to prove it, including seven league championships, four European Cup/Champions League titles, two InterContinental Cups, four European SuperCups and the Italian Cup.
Maldini retired from the international game after an Italian record 126 caps, stretching back to 1988 when he made his debut in a 1-1 draw against Yugoslavia, after the FIFA World Cup in Korea/Japan. The highlights of his Azzurri career came when he played in the 1994 final of the World Cup and UEFA EURO 2000, though both ended in defeat. Giovanni Trapattoni then tried unsuccessfully to persuade Maldini out of retirement to join the national squad for UEFA EURO 2004
