Dear Fandom: Can we do better? I'm going to just assume that you-all know that if I were in California, I would be working for No on Prop 8. Things are looking pretty bad right now, as the "Yes on Prop 8" gang has been getting a Hell (word chosen deliberately) of a lot of support from churches, especially the Mormons. Pam Spaulding asks, of a bunch of new No On 8 ads, "are they effective?" My question is, can fandom do better? Can fans, within the next week, come up with better ads than the ones the pros have, and donate them or drive them viral via YouTube? I've signed up to do phone banking, because I have no money -- I just hope phone calls from out-of-staters will count with the people who count. But I am very proud to have grown up in Connecticut. |

Halloween decorations, 2008! My Halloween decorations went up yesterday! This year sees the return of the Devil face with the glowing LED eyes! (Eyes added by my own hacking, he says with all due modesty.) Orange rice lights in the office window. Black backdrop on the door. Skull and crossbones on the door. Bloodied hand prints and dripping blood in the front two windows. How long can I wait before the compulsion to make a jack-o-lantern overtakes me? Gordon Brown, texture like sun Well, he didn't show up during my lunch break - presumably he rocked up afterwards. All I saw were a couple of news vans and a single armed copper looking bored. Not a sniper in sight (which presumably means they're very well trained).
Have a good weekend, all. Never mind all the economy stuff, money is just an illusion created by the ruling hegemony to keep us all dancing to their tune. The sooner we realise we don't need it and there're far more sensible ways to apportion wealth, the better. I'm off to draft the new five year plan for the UK, and it will involve lots of chocolate, fudge, real ale and possibly bellydancing robot girls from Mars or something. You've got to deal with the real issues.

Dewey I'm currently sitting in the Guttenberg Public Library in Guttenberg, IA and, during a break from homework, have come across a staff pick of recommended reading that I've fallen in love with and will, no doubt, have difficulty leaving the library without, despite lack of local library card. The book is called Dewey: The Small-Town Library Cat Who Touched the World and you can read more about Dewey Readmore Books in his staff bio, written by other members of library staff at the Spencer,IA Public Library. You can read more about Dewey's amazing story in USA Today, The NY Times, and in Dewey's Facebook. |

Forwards.... and backwards I am slowly moving forwards with the Lombard Rally: I'm off to do another letter-drop run this weekend (not sure which day yet - depends on various things) - so drive down the Hawick road to Newcastleton, over the hill to Langholm, over again towards Lockerbie, and up to Castle O'er. Then from Castle O'er to Moffet.
Two steps back, however, with this damn audi: we've now discovered that the clutch slave cylinder (the bit that pushes a lever to push the "thrust bearing" that releases the clutch that drives the gearbox) has popped a seal, and has pissed fluid all over the floor.
So we've had to take the "It'll be a bastard to bleed" clutch out to go and find a new seal and rebuild it before we can refit it, before fitting the gearbox, before bleeding the clutch. |

Feeling Good, Feeling Guilt Originally published at Marti Abernathey. You can comment here or there. I’m sitting here on the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s grounds enjoying the weather, the beautiful surroundings, and just thinking about how good my life is right now.
The last time in my life where I felt the world (and in particular the USA) was in such a bad space was during the hostage crisis back in the late 70s. The economy sucked, gas rationing was a reality, and the general feeling I got from others was that it was a time to fear, a time to be afraid, a time to suffer. With the crappy economic outlook, two wars that seem will never end, and unemployment rising, it feels much worse that even those times did.
It’s ironic when most of the world seemed to be clicking into a good spaces, my life was falling apart. Now that the world seems to be going in the shitter, mine is kicking into high gear. I’m making more money than I ever have, I having more personal success than I ever have, and my personal life is filled with wonderful people that love me in a way that I’ve never experienced. Don’t get me wrong, I’m concerned that the shitty economy is going to swoop in and affect my life. But right now when people are worrying about their 401k or their house payment, I’m thinking about what I want to do next with my life. I’ve resisted putting any money in the stock market because it goes against my general philosophy of life. I don’t want to make money that I didn’t really earn. To me, the stock market has always seemed like a fancy casino that I don’t have the money to waste on. I paid for my car (a 2001 Hyundai Accent) with cash, I rent an apartment that’s definitely below my means, and I don’t buy expensive toys or hobbies. I decided long ago that while I live in a consumer culture, I don’t have to participate in it the way that a lot of people do. I watch very little television (Olbermann and Maddow are the exceptions), and most of my free time is spent writing or doing political work.
I’m happy. And that’s not an emotion that I’ve been able to claim reliably since 1997. Fuck it, I can accept the guilt… this time in my life is too sweet. |

Christmas parties That time of year again. The company Christmas party has been planned for the end of November and I need to RSVP by Wednesday. Normally I wouldn't question, I'd be there. This year instead of a dinner in town they've booked a dinner at a golf resort 40 min outside of town. Going will also require a $50 "donation" to the company's social fund for their summer social. So... $50 + gas + drinks for a nice meal with people I never see to then stay alone in a hotel room. The thought of going makes me anxious but the thought of not going makes me a little :( I'm also going to miss their annual Chinese food lunch and gift exchange again this year.
It's weird, the longer I'm on this gov't contract (14.5 months and counting) the more I feel, not like a gov't employee, but like a freelance contractor with two major clients. Weird, wha?

Current Mood: yasumi!!! |

Toy shopping Opps, went shopping again in my lunch hour, asked my sister if there was anything else that Ethan needed.
Seems he doesn't have many toys for just playing on the floor with etc., however he is only 3 weeks old. He has lots of toy but they are not very useful at the moment or only for when he's in his cot etc.
I put that to right he now has some cubes which have different materials and pictures on each site some also make noise and have reflective surfaces. Also I go some stacking bugs they are supposed to be for slightly older, but they will be fine for just throwing around the house for now before he learns to stack them.
1 hour 45 mins till i get out of here yipeee. |

Where you gonna run to? 14/57: Why am I down to a page a day, when I cranked out the last six pages of scene 1 in a single night? Because damn, these pages needed more work. Also, panel four is one of my favorite moments in all 320 pages of the comic, and I wanted to get it right. It's pretty much the moment where I nailed down how I wanted to do Claudius: as a lecherous egomaniac who still manages to come off as kind of adorable and silly in his lecherous egomania. Anyway, the rest of scene 2 should go faster, and then another slow-down at scene 3. (Which also needs a good chunk of work. Much like Horatio, I didn't really peg Ophelia's appearance until much later.) ( 1.2.2 )Also, Jae is pretty awesome. She's given me one more reason to be indignant about this election. ("Hey, I lived in Hyde Park too!") And she's given me one more reason to be glad I left Hyde Park. ("Hey, the place was crawling with terrorists!") Some Friendly Advice All you authors out there, we need to have a talk. Sit down.
Tell me, if someone were to Google your name, or the name you write under, right now, would they be able to find you? Would your website come up on the first page of hits? Do you even have a website? No, I am not talking about your LJ, I am talking about a website. A place where people can find out where you’ve been published, what is coming up, maybe a little bit about you? No? No, no, no on all counts?
Then you FAIL, author.
Look, I understand that not everyone is all about being all up in the internet and revealing their whole lives all the time. I really get that. However, if you plan to sell some stories and make a name for yourself, you need to be out there a little bit. You need to have some kind of web presence, even if it’s just a very simple group of pages that list your published works and maybe your favorite soup recipe. There needs to be a way for people who enjoy your work to keep up with you and maybe read more of your stories. You need to have a presence on the damn internet.
And no, LiveJournal is not enough. Because LiveJournal or any other social networking site — Facebook, MySpace, whatever — is generally only useful to those already on it. People who are just on the internet, or just looking for some casual information, or just looking to read more by you, are not interested in your LJ. Not that they aren’t interested in journals or blogs, but they want something that feels open, inviting, and not like they have to have a password or be a part of a community.
So, I will say it again: Get a website. Seriously. If you have sold one story or five or however many, you need a website.
I just spent several minutes trying to track down the contact info for about 7 authors and 5 of them did not have a website or just had an LJ. A lot of them had distinctive names, yet show up no where on Google. No No, no, a thousand times no.
Go get one now. (Or find someone willing to make you one. I know several people who charge reasonable rates.)

PM speech: to go or not to go Heh - misleading and possibly hopeful title is misleading and possibly hopeful.
Our glorious leader, Prime Minister Gordon Brown is apparently giving a speech at Cheltenham town hall this lunchtime (ie, nowish). I'm mulling whether to use some flexitime up and head down there now to gawp - it's two mintes walk, literally.
Also, it'll be fun playing 'spot the sniper'. They station blokes on all the rooftops around, apparently, whenever someone terrorist-attackable is in town.

FADE IN
INT. HOME OFFICE BASEMENT - DAY
COWORKER
There it goes.
The room is fairly quiet considering all of the wandering about of employees walking back and forth about their business.
herman
There what goes?
coworker
A mouse. You didn't see it?
SFX: cell phone
HERMAN
Hello… it's Stanislavski
HERMAN STANISLAVSKI has a comfortable job at a magazine writing on-line articles for which he receives a commission each time his news stories go to print.
MINA
Hi. Have you gone to lunch yet?
HERMAN
No.
MINA
I'm coming down. Don't leave without me.
INT. ROOF TOP - DAY
MINA hangs up her phone. She sighs. She is in love with Herman. They get along with each other fairly well.
EXT. PARK - NOON
Mina
How's it going down there.
Herman
My eyes are burning. Together with the constant calls I get on the cell, it's a miracle my doctor hasn't diagnosed me with a brain tumor.
Mina
I'm sorry.
Herman
What?
Mina
Nothing.
Herman
Guess what?
(PAUSE)
Remember Fred Sterlington?
MINA
The volleyball player?
herman
Yeah. He wants me to meet him next week at the hospital during his physical.
Mina
Oh, dang! He's trying to get you to pee in a cup for him.
Herman
Why does everyone think I'm so straight laced?
mina
Because you're a loser.
Herman
There are journalists, famous ones, who do drugs. Look at Hunter S. Thompson.
Long pause as the couple continue to stroll down a path along the lake watching the ducks.
mina
Hey, you wanna play a funny joke?
herman
I'm not going to get high before his exam. He's trying to get into the olympics.
mina
Well wait. You said he was having a physical. Is it a physical or is it a urine test? … because physicals are supposed to be private.
herman
He's just paranoid. I guess that's one of the side effects you get from taking steroids.
mina
Okay. I'm on my period.
herman
Oh shit!! ( cut for smutty mouth ) |
