You will have to reply or else I will delete your claim and you'll have to re-apply and start over if you wrote more than ten fics.

Also, aaronlisa will be updating the tags and tagging ll the untagged entries, so if you've signed up for a claim recently and haven't heard from her, that's why. She's hoping to be done by the end of August.

Title: Addiction
Author: faith_obrien
Claim: Calleigh Duquesne
Fandom: CSI:Miami
csi50 Theme: Set #3: Romance, #41 Lust
Rating: T

Prompt 41-Lust

His lips found hers then in a hungry bittersweet fervor. His tongue slipped between her swollen, supple lips, absorbing her intoxicating nectar. She moaned against his mouth as his hands moved under her t-shirt and over her soft, curving skin. Impatient, she grabbed his hands and moved them up to experience her burgeoning, throbbing breasts…

BEEP!

Calleigh’s book nearly fell out of her hands at the sound of the microwave timer going off. She fanned herself lightly, setting down Untamed Savanna and shared a look with Cubano. “That Savanna,” she said very seriously, “is quite the hussy,” she ran her nails over the cat’s velvety fur before rising to her feet. She pulled the microwave door open and removed her reheated tea. As she closed the door, Calleigh caught a glimpse of the time—it was already seven thirty.
“Oh my goodness,” she said mildly to herself. “Where did the day go?”
But she knew exactly where the day had gone. After she’d gotten back from the gym that morning at nine, Calleigh had plopped herself down on the couch and buried her nose in her new book.
Calleigh didn’t have many vices. She didn’t smoke, only drank occasionally and never more than she could handle, never used drugs, didn’t engage in any risky behavior beyond her job. But when it came to romance novelist Precious Winters, Calleigh was a hopeless addict.
It had started when she was thirteen and had discovered her mother’s secret stash under the bed. On long, sticky Louisiana summer afternoons, Calleigh would hole up in her tree house and read for hours, mesmerized by the language and the utterly ridiculous storylines. Having been raised by a woman who defined the word “distracted” Calleigh had attributed everything she’d ever learned about sex to Ms. Precious Winters.
Boy, did that set her up for disappointment that first time.
Still, Calleigh forgave Precious for her high expectations and had continued buying her books on the sly since she was seventeen. No one had ever found out about her love of trashy romance. In college, she had explained the occasional book away by claiming they were her roommate’s or a friend who had left it there. Once she’d moved on her own though, that particular secret was the easiest of all to keep. Her books were in a suitcase under her bed and only ever saw the light of day one at a time.
There would be no end of humiliation if someone ever found out.
Normally, she purchased them online through preciouswinters.com—she got a discount for being such a loyal customer—but today, on her way home to enjoy a blissful day off, she had caught sight of a new display in the bookstore a few blocks from the gym. It was a sign. Keeping her sunglasses on for fear of recognition, Calleigh had darted into the store, purchased the book—with cash, of course—and had scampered home as fast as her car could take her.
She leaned against the counter and took a sip of her tea. A laugh escaped her lips when she looked at the time again. Seven-thirty. That was a little sad. She had planned on doing some paperwork, catching up on her reports, maybe even researching some new technologies or surfing the web for upcoming seminars. Instead, she’d been swept up in the unbridled passion of Savanna and her string of lovers.
Feeling a little guilty for wasting the day, Calleigh moved to her briefcase and dropped a pile of folders on the coffee table next to her overturned book. Just as she was about to sit down and get comfortable with her work, there was a knock at the door.
Eric was waiting with a smile when she opened the door. “Hey,” she greeted, mirroring his grin. “What’s going on?”
He shrugged. “I’m hungry,” he said bluntly. “Plus, yesterday was my day off and today was your day off so we haven’t hung out in about three days.”
She smiled. “Yeah, I guess that’s about right,” she moved aside, “Come in.”
“You want to go get some Chinese or something?” he asked, stepping out of his shoes.
“Yeah, absolutely,” Calleigh shut the door behind him as Cubano wandered over to greet their guest.
“Hey!” Eric’s smile doubled at the sight of the small cat. “Look at you!” he exclaimed, bending down to pick him up. “He’s gotten so big.”
“I know, he eats like a machine,” Calleigh shook her head.
“So how was your day off?” he asked as the cat nuzzled his chin.
“Oh, it was fine. I did paperwork most of the day,” she lied, motioning vaguely to the coffee table behind her. “I can be ready in about twenty minutes if you don’t mind waiting.”
“I don’t mind,” he smiled good-naturedly at her.
“Can I get you a drink or something?”
“No, I’m fine.”
“Okay,” she backed up toward the staircase. “Make yourself at home, I’ll be quick.”
Eric took a seat on Calleigh’s well loved sofa. He looked down at the file folders and shook his head. Calleigh was a workaholic—even on her day off she had her nose to the grind.
Cubano tired easily of Eric’s lazy petting and leapt from his arms onto the coffee table. “Are you allowed to be up there?” Eric asked ducking to be at eye level with the furry housemate. Cubano—in typical cat fashion—ignored him and began prancing along the length of the table knocking over a file, the television remote and a thick paperback in the process. Eric sighed. “Now, I know you’re not allowed to be doing that.” He moved the animal down to the ground and scooped up what the cat had discarded.
He shouldn’t have looked at the book. He knew that. He should have just picked it up and put it back where he found it. But it had fallen open and…well…the word breast had caught his attention.
He was a guy. These things happened.
As he heard the shower turn on upstairs, his eyes fell to the passage that had opened.
…she grabbed his hands and moved them up to experience her burgeoning, throbbing breasts.
Throbbing breasts? Throbbing? Eric felt his brow crinkle. He’d seen a fair amount of breasts in his day. Big, small, perky, fake. They’d bounced (the real ones) and remained stationary (usually the fake), jiggled and occasionally seemed to dance on their own accord…but throbbing breasts? That was a new one. Still, despite his confusion, or perhaps because of it, he read on.
With her own hands free to wander, Savanna trailed her fingers over the hard smoothness and strength of his chest, her fingertips exploring the contours of bone and sinew. As Angelo’s tongue plundered her mouth, she moved her hands once more over the corrugated leanness of his flat abdomen and then down further, coming to rest on the driving need of his sex.
“Jesus Christ,” Eric murmured, turning the book over to read the title. Did Calleigh really read this shit? Untamed Savanna showed a picture of a couple more or less having sex on the back of a horse. Was that even possible? Mindlessly, he flipped further in the book.
“I want you inside of me, Roman,” Savanna purred, toying with a piece of straw…
“Roman?” Eric asked himself as he back to where he’d started. “What happened to Angelo?” Upstairs, he heard the water stop rushing and immediately felt a wave of embarrassment.
Frantically, he put the book back the way he’d found it and locked eyes with Cubano, his only witness. “This never happened.”
Calleigh came down a few minutes later in jeans and a light sweater, smelling like a fresh shower. She smiled and grabbed her purse. “Okay, we can go.”
“Great,” Eric leapt from the couch and followed her out to his car.

***

It was much later that night when Calleigh was getting into bed. Dinner with Eric had been fun, they’d laughed at the usual stupid things, bantered merrily, and had discussed work. She’d had a great time. She always had a great time with Eric.
He’d dropped her off relatively early—they both had work in the morning. Calleigh had managed to finish two of her remaining reports before succumbing to her addiction and burying her nose in the book once more.
It was just after midnight when she approached the final section of Untamed Savanna. Her heart was racing, fingers anxiously turning the pages, eyes widening with each twist and sudden turn when the phone rang.
She screamed and dropped the book again. Taking a moment to calm down, Calleigh reached beside her and grabbed her phone. “Hello?”
“I have to ask you something,” Eric’s tone was serious.
Calleigh’s brow furrowed. “What’s up? Is everything okay?”
“Yeah, everything’s fine. I just have to ask you something.”
“Fire away.”
“What the hell happens with Angelo?”
Calleigh stopped and pulled the phone away from her ear. She stared at it for a few long moments. Untamed Savanna. She had left it out on the coffee table. Jesus Christ—how could she have been so stupid?
“Calleigh?” Eric asked, sounding anxious. “Calleigh, are you there?”
“Eric Delko,” she began gravely, “did you read my book?”
“Look, I know I shouldn’t have but it fell off the table and I just…caught a glimpse of a few paragraphs.”
“And yet you know that Angelo doesn’t stay with Savanna?” She couldn’t believe she was discussing this.
“Does he leave her? Because it seems like he’s getting the job done, at least at the part where I am.”
She blinked. “I’m sorry? The part where you are?”
“I was curious,” he mumbled almost incoherently.
“Eric, I swear to God, if this is you making fun of me… It’s not like I read them all the time…it’s my thing that I do.”
“Calleigh,” she caught the hint of a smile in his voice. “I’m not going to tell anyone.”
“Thank you.”
“As long as you tell me what’s going to happen with Angelo.”
Her mouth opened and closed a few times. “If I tell you, it ruins the story.”
“What story?”
She sighed. “What chapter are you on?”
“Three.”
“She leaves him,” she sighed, hating herself for giving the plot away. “But it’s not until chapter twelve.”
“Why?”
“I’m not telling you everything! Where’s the fun in you reading it then?”
He sighed. “But I thought she loved him.”
Calleigh wanted to hug him through the phone. “She does…she’s just afraid of her feelings for him.”
“Well that’s stupid.”
“No it’s not!” she argued. “It’s real life!”
He scoffed. “Whatever you say, Cal. I’m saying if Savanna really loved Angelo, she’d get off her high horse and just be with him.”
“Read the book before you give me your judgments.”
Eric sighed. “Good night, Calleigh.”
“Good night, Eric.”
She hung up the phone and returned to the final page.
“I’m sorry I hurt you, Angelo,” Savanna sobbed, tears streaming down her porcelain cheeks. “You have to know that I’ve loved you forever.”
Angelo reached out a shaking hand and wiped away her tears. “I know, Savanna. I’m sorry you felt that you couldn’t trust me not to hurt you.”
“Our pasts are just so…”
Angelo silenced her with a kiss. “Past is past, Savanna. I’ve never loved anyone the way I love you.”
“I love you too.”
He swept her up into his arms and onto the horse, carrying her off to a lifetime of blissful happiness and sweet love-making.
She sighed and put the book on her nightstand. She shut off the light and curled up under her blankets. At least someone was able to get off of her high horse. Calleigh waved good night to the elephant in the room and fell soundly asleep.

Title: Love/Hate Relationship
Author: faith_obrien
Claim: Calleigh Duquesne
Fandom: CSI:Miami
csi50 Theme: Set #3: Romance, #30 Invincibility
Rating: T

It wasn’t the first time someone had died in front of her. It wasn’t even the first time someone had committed suicide in front of her. She had lost people of greater importance in her life before that moment. Speed, her grandmother, her best friend as a child, a nephew only a few hours old…all had slipped through her fingers, all with a deeper connection to her, all she had been able to move on from, relatively unscathed.
But when John Hagen turned his gun on himself in her lab, something came loose inside. She had known John, both as a friend and as a lover. He had never seemed anything less than a perfectly healthy, normal guy. Someone who was seeing his share of hardship lately, but nothing anyone couldn’t overcome given enough time.
He had been strong and healthy and independent—just like her. He had his whole life ahead of him—just like her. He could have been helped. She could have helped him, if only she’d known what was wrong.
And perhaps that’s what it was that still haunted her each day as she worked in the lab where he’d taken his last breath. She hadn’t known anything was wrong because she didn’t want to get involved. She had wanted to remain—as she always was—on the outside, not getting attached, keeping her professional distance. It wasn’t her business anymore—they weren’t together anymore. Someone else would take care of him.
But no one had. And it had taken three coats of paint to cover up the proof of that fact.
That day had been only the second time she had ever considered quitting her job. The first had been after Speed, when going about every day tasks had seemed unbearable, when just the act of doing her job had broken her heart day after day. But she hadn’t quit then. She hadn’t quit because she knew that people needed her. She could still help people by staying. If she left…she didn’t know who she’d be helping.
But when John had died, there had been something different. She hadn’t been able to help a man standing in front of her, screaming for it at the top of his lungs. What good could she be to anyone else? Why devote her life to helping strangers when she couldn’t even help her friends.
In the end, it was Alexx who stopped her from making a mistake.
“Talk to me baby,” she said, dropping onto the park bench next to her.
“I’m fine, Alexx, really. I was just catching some air before I went home.”
Alexx fastened her with a raised eyebrow. “You can be fine and still talk to me.”
Calleigh had smiled sadly. “It’s just been a rough day.”
Her friend had nodded, rubbing her arm. “I know. But honey, he was sick. There’s nothing you could have done differently.”
“I could’ve been there for him,” she’d said softly. “He was reaching out to me and I just kept blowing him off. I could’ve helped him earlier.”
“There is no way you could have known what he was going to do.”
“It feels like I could have, though. It feels like I should have.”
Alexx nodded sadly and reached for Calleigh’s hand. She gave it a squeeze. They sat in silence, watching listlessly as the sun slid down into the ocean. It was nearly dark before Calleigh spoke again.
“Do you remember when I first started here?”
Alexx smiled. “A ball of fire from New Orleans. You drove all the boys crazy and did their jobs better than they could too.”
She allowed herself a small smile. “I’ve loved guns since I was a little girl. I loved shooting and loading and target practice and hunting. I loved the way I felt when I fired a gun.” She took a deep breath and tried to remember the feeling she was talking about. “But you know what I loved most of all?”
“What’s that?”
“The power. I know it sounds crazy but there’s a sense of power and protection that I always felt when I held a gun.”
“I don’t think that’s crazy at all.”
“It’s just that growing up, everything was always such a mess. I just knew the one place I could always be in control was at the range. It was the only time I didn’t feel vulnerable. The only time I felt invincible.”
“There’s nothing wrong with vulnerability, honey. Nothing wrong at all.”
“I just…” her voice caught. “I just don’t think I can do this anymore. This place…these things that I loved…that I found solace in…” she took a shaky breath. “They keep killing my friends.” She gave a futile wipe at her eyes as Alexx took her in her arms.
“Baby, it’s okay.” She petted Calleigh’s blonde hair for a few moments, rocking back and forth on the bench. “It’s okay.”
“I just don’t know how I’m supposed to go back to that lab. I just keep seeing him lying there,” Calleigh took a deep breath and wiped again at her eyes. “How am I supposed to do my job when I can’t even stand to be there?”
“Hey,” Alexx took Calleigh’s face in her hands. “You are good at your job, okay? You are a good CSI.” She smoothed her hair away from her face. “You can still help people—even without the guns.”
“I’m not so sure anymore.”
“You don’t have to be right now, baby,” Alexx said soothingly. “Just take things one step at a time.”

And that was how she had taken things. One step at a time. One foot in front of the other, dealing with that feeling of being exposed, of being afraid of her job, one day at a time. Until one day had become two and then a week and then a month and before she knew it, she was back in her lab. Just like she was today.
Calleigh released the magazine and took off her headset. She looked around her lab with a resigned smile. Alexx had been right—she was good at what she did. It was where she belonged. Her eyes fell to the .38 in her hand.
Her relationship with guns had changed. Before it had been about the control, about the power—the invincibility. Now, she set it down and made a few notes on the report, being around her guns was like being around an old friend. And there was something different. A new element.
Respect.
And perhaps, she thought as she gave the lab another appreciative look, perhaps that was something that John had left her without even knowing it.
Title: Sex and Cocktails
Author: faith_obrien
Claim: Calleigh Duquesne
Fandom: CSI:Miami
csi50 Theme: Set #3: Romance, #34 Sex
Rating: T
Warnings: N/A

Prompt 34-Sex

“Sex.”
Everyone stopped and looked in Valera’s direction.
“I’m sorry?” Calleigh asked, setting her Bloody Mary down on the table.
“Sex,” Valera shrugged. “We needed something to talk about,” she shrugged again. “Let’s talk about sex.”
“I didn’t know we were that close,” Natalia commented dryly, signaling the waiter for another round of cocktails.
“I didn’t know we were that out of things to talk about,” Calleigh said, biting her lower lip.
“Well, we are. I’m bored to tears.” Valera drained her margarita and pushed the empty glass to the end of the booth. “So…sex.”
“What about it?” Natalia asked.
“Well, I was just thinking today, about the case and that girl with all the X...”
“Yeah,” Natalia sighed with a shake of her head, “your first time is supposed to be something you’ll remember…not how people remember you.”
“At least Alexx said she was probably so buzzed she didn’t realize what was going on,” Calleigh remarked. “Which, sadly, is a comfort.”
“Right,” Valera agreed, “which is what got me thinking about how god-awful my first time was.” She gratefully accepted a fresh margarita from the waiter. “I mean, everyone always talks about how awful it was…but this was really, really bad.”
Natalia quirked an eyebrow; she shared a look with Calleigh. “All right,” she shrugged, “I’ll bite. What happened?”
“The monsignor caught us.”
Calleigh raised her eyebrows. “The monsignor? Where were you—church camp?” she asked bringing her glass to her lips.
“The seminary.”
Calleigh choked and set her drink down. “I’m sorry…the seminary? As in…a school for priests?”
“There was one in my town; it was only a few miles from where I grew up,” Valera shrugged nonchalantly.
“So your first time was with a priest?” Natalia asked in disbelief.
“He hadn’t taken Orders yet.”
“So? Don’t they take a vow of celibacy?”
“Not until later,” she looked between the two of them, “look, you’re missing the point.”
“I don’t know, Valera,” Calleigh shook her head with a smile, “I think I’m getting the point loud and clear.”
“The bad part wasn’t that he was in the seminary,” Valera explained emphatically. “The bad part was that we were walked in on by the monsignor, he got kicked out of the priesthood, and all I got was the most guilt-ridden thirty eight seconds of my life.”
There was a small, stunned silence. “Thirty eight seconds, huh?” Natalia asked, suppressing a smile.
“At the time, they were also the most passionate and erotic thirty eight seconds of my life. But yes,” she sighed nostalgically, “thirty eight seconds.”
“That’s quite a coming of age tale you’ve got there, Valera,” Calleigh laughed softly to herself.
“Well…?” she looked at her two co-workers expectantly.
“Well what?” the blonde asked, a feeling of discomfort worming its way into her stomach.
“I’m not sharing a story like that without getting something in return!” Valera looked from one to the other. “Story-time! Go.”
Natalia shrugged. “Mine’s nothing like yours, thank God,” she added as an afterthought. “I don’t know, I was fifteen…with my boyfriend at the time…it lasted about three minutes before I decided I hated everything about it and made him take me home.”
Valera let out a bark-like laugh. “How long did the relationship last after that?”
“Too long,” Natalia rolled her eyes. “Although, I did borrow my mom’s shirt that night…and I felt so guilty I almost burned it. But it was her favorite shirt…so I just tried to avoid her every time she wore it after that.”
Their wave of girlish giggles was cut short when Valera’s eyes strayed to the door. She waved wildly for a moment, a big smile pushing its way onto her face. Calleigh followed her gaze and found Eric and Ryan making their way through the crowd.
They each squeezed in on opposite sides of the booth—Eric next to Calleigh, Ryan next to Valera. “Sorry we’re late ladies,” the latter apologized with a smile.
“Not at all,” Calleigh assured him.
“You seemed to be enjoying yourselves,” Eric commented as he shrugged out of his jacket, his arm brushing against Calleigh’s as he did so. “Anything you’d like to share?”
The blonde shrugged coyly. “Nothin’ but a little girl talk.”
“We were comparing first time stories,” Valera said bluntly.
Calleigh rolled her eyes; so much for coy and mysterious when Valera was involved. She felt Eric’s eyes on her. “What?” she asked, meeting his gaze.
“Nothing,” he grinned, backing off. “Just seems like an interesting topic.”
“Well that depends,” Ryan countered. “It could be interesting; or it could just be horrifically embarrassing.”
“Anything you feel like fessing up to?” Natalia teased, enjoying this new sense of playfulness and comradery that they’d all fallen into.
“Uh, let’s see here,” Ryan tilted his head down and squeezed the bridge of his nose. “I was…twenty years old…a junior at BU—”
“Wow, you were twenty?” Valera asked incredulously.
Ryan gave her a serious look. “I know, it’s difficult to believe I was not always this smooth.”
Eric chucked but said nothing.
“Anyway,” Wolfe continued after a pointed look in Delko’s direction, “I was a junior at BU and it was with Dr. Robinson—my organic chemistry professor.”
“Really?” Valera suddenly seemed impressed. “You did it with your professor?”
“And her name was really Dr. Robinson?” asked Natalia.
“Dr. Rachel Robinson,” Ryan smiled proudly. He grabbed Valera’s drink and raised it in a mock toast. “Here’s to you.”
“Now that’s a story,” Eric said with a hint of pride in his voice.
“Not like you don’t have them,” Ryan challenged.
“Hey, we’re not going there.”
“C’mon, Delko—at least give us the first time rundown,” Valera egged him on, subtly taking her drink from Ryan’s fingers.
“Jesus, I don’t even…” Eric shook his head. “I don’t even know if I remember.”
“You don’t remember?” Calleigh asked in disbelief. “Not even how old you were?”
“No,” he said with a shrug, “not really.”
“You’ve just been screwin’ all your life, huh?” she asked, giving him a playful nudge in the ribs.
“Yeah, I don’t know. Guess it wasn’t that memorable.”
The conversation continued on for some time after that, turning quickly from a game of past experiences to a rather immature version of Would You Rather.
“Natalia: Tripp or Tyler?” Ryan asked, gulping the beer he’d ordered himself.
“Tripp,” Natalia said almost instantly. “Tyler’s clumsy.” The table snickered before Natalia chose a victim. “Calleigh: Horatio or Stetler?”
Calleigh’s eyes widened. “I don’t really know,” she answered honestly. “I mean, I love Horatio to death but he’s so much like a father figure…but then Stetler is just so…”
“Calleigh, c’mon!” Valera barked—her fourth margarita kicking in. “It’s supposed to be quick answer—it’s the only way you get to the truth.”
“Oh, fine,” she rolled her eyes, “I guess Horatio.”
“Daddy issues…” Natalia said quietly.
“Hey hey hey,” Ryan put up a hand. “Leave her alone—it’s a personal choice. Although I do think she picked the right one. I bet Horatio is a very gifted lover.”
There was a silence that fell over the table just long enough for everyone to take a deep breath. And then everyone erupted in laughter.
“Ryan, do me a favor,” Valera gasped, wiping at her eyes. “Never again mention Horatio’s skills—experienced or speculated—as a lover again.”
Still a charming shade of crimson, Ryan nodded. “Not a problem.”
“Y’know,” Calleigh began thoughtfully as she caught her breath, “they say CSIs make the best lovers.”
“And why is that?” Eric asked, suddenly intrigued.
“They pay more attention to detail, not afraid to take their time,” she raised her eyebrows at him and offered a wicked grin.
“I should really keep that in mind,” Valera said, leaning forward with interest. “You never find anything all that satisfying with DNA…usually just a bunch of nerds.”
“On that note,” Natalia glanced down at her watch, “I think we’d better call it a night, guys. I don’t know about you but six a.m comes very early for this chick.”
They broke up then, shrugging into light jackets, settling bar tabs and rummaging for car keys all with the promise to see one another at work the next morning and with an unspoken agreement that this conversation had never happened.
“Which way are you?” Eric asked when they got outside. The air was cooler—less sticky. Fall, or what little Miami saw of it, was definitely on the way.
“I’m this way,” Calleigh pointed left down the block.
“Me too,” he smiled down at her. “Would you mind an escort?”
“Well normally I’d go out of my way to act all empowered but,” she yawned around her heavy Southern accent, “it’s late and I’m tired. So yes, I would love an escort.”
“You never shared your story,” he said suddenly, breaking a comfortable silence that had settled over them.
“What story?”
“Y’know, your first time.”
“Oh,” Calleigh waved it away. “Hardly a story—freshman year of college, first guy who really took an interest…y’know, nothing special.”
“Nothing special at all?”
She shook her head with a twinge of regret. “Not really. Looking back I probably should have waited longer for someone I really cared about but,” she shrugged, “lessons learned.”
“At least there’s that.” They lapsed into silence again; Calleigh looped her arm through his and rested her tired head on his shoulder. “So Horatio, huh?”
Calleigh laughed. “Oh shut up.”
“Nah, it’s okay. I’d pick him over Stetler too.”
“Well there’s an image,” she giggled as her car came into view.
“Valera or Natalia,” he asked suddenly, steering her toward the curb.
“I am not even going to give you the pleasure of that response.”
“So, Natalia then?” he asked, a smile working itself onto his lips.
Calleigh shook her head and laughed. “That was fun,” she sighed, leaning against the passenger side of the car.
“Yeah, it was. I don’t know why the five of us don’t hang out more often.”
She shrugged. “Because we all work eighteen hours a day usually.”
“You’ve got a point.”
“Well,” Calleigh jingled her keys. “I have a kitty to feed and a bathtub to be soaking in. I will see you tomorrow.” She made her way to the other side of the car before she looked down the empty street. “Eric, did your car get stolen?”
“Nah,” he looked embarrassed for a moment. “It’s about three blocks that way,” he pointed in the direction from where they’d just come.
“I thought you said it was over here.”
“I lied,” he shrugged. “I didn’t want you to have to walk by yourself.”
Calleigh rolled her eyes. “Get in, I’ll drive you to your car.”
The short jaunt was spent fiddling with the radio and the heater, positioning the vents, adjusting mirrors and seats. They had almost reached his car before he said anything.
When he did, it was quiet—almost to himself. “Audriana Herrara.”
Calleigh looked at him. “I’m sorry?”
“Her name was Audriana Herrara—she was my first real girlfriend. We were seventeen, after the prom we did the whole stereotype—hotel room, candles, bubble bath…the whole nine.” He smiled to himself. “It was great.”
Calleigh pulled up next to his car with a smile. “I knew you didn’t forget. Why didn’t you say anything?”
“Why didn’t you?”
She shrugged. “Mine isn’t a good story.”
“Yeah, well,” he looked down at his hands, “neither was mine. It was just a good experience.”
“I beg to differ.”
“Oh, really?”
She looked thoughtful for a moment. “See, I never thought of you as a romantic—puts things in a little different perspective. So yeah, I thought it was a good story.”
“Hey, wait a minute. Where do you get off saying I’m not romantic?”
She shrugged. “I’m just saying, it’s not the first adjective that comes to mind when I think of you, that’s all.”
Before she could say another word, Eric leaned over and captured her lips with his. He heard a small sound of surprise before she returned the sentiment, one hand coming up to rest tentatively on his cheek.
She pulled away first. “Eric, Eric we can’t…”
“Yeah,” he sighed, trying to hide his disappointment. “I thought you might say that. Still,” a grin appeared on his face. “Change your opinion a little?”
“That wasn’t romance,” she scoffed, “that was impulse.” Realizing that may have come out hurtful, Calleigh rephrased. “Nice impulse…but impulse nonetheless.”
Eric rolled his eyes and brought her fingers to his lips. “Well then you just stick around, Miss Duquesne. Because you ain’t seen nothing yet.”

x0x0x

When she opened her front door the next morning, it was to three dozen pink tulips and a card that read “Pink always was your favorite color.”
Calleigh rolled her eyes and placed the roses on her kitchen table. Cubano—still far too tiny to jump up—peered at them curiously. “He’s complicating things,” she said to him, bustling toward the coffee maker for a warm-up in her travel mug. Cubano mewed noncommittally. “You always take his side,” she grumbled.
Still, Calleigh found herself staring fondly at the flowers. They were beautiful. And pink was her favorite color—though she didn’t wear it all that often.
She sighed, fighting off the cynic in her head. Maybe romance wasn’t all that dead after all.
