AboutHelios Dot Net / Crystal Midgar is a Multi-Fandom RPG. There are no restrictions on membership, although players below the age of 17 are requested to declare it during the applications, as NC-17 material may emerge from time to time. This RPG is also slash friendly (i.e. yaoi and yuri are allowed).
One Network to Rule Them All…
It is the year 2013. Shinra scientists, being entirely too clever for their own good, have devised an amazing virtual reality platform known as Helios Dot Net. This has permeated every household in Midgar, for controllers are distributed free by Shinra Company, allowing everyone to participate in the great online RPG experience. Within a few years, HDN has practically become a part of everyone’s lives.
As far as developers and the citizens of Crystal Midgar are concerned, this is simply the newest and shiniest online RPG. However, the network has its own secrets – it is not completely real, but it is not completely artificial either, and it has a power of its own.
Individuals have discovered that HDN has doors to many worlds, and not all of these are the artificial ones designed by Shinra engineers. A great working has been done in secret, and some of these doors have been opened, allowing other-worlders and bizarre creatures to step through HDN and into Crystal Midgar. And when they follow the mysterious white bunny down the rabbit hole into the light that lies beyond, they will find a city on the brink of civil war.

Crystal Midgar has always been a peaceful, thriving city/state, the economic powerhouse of the planet Gaia. Once, it had its own government, but this was rapidly overtaken when Shinra Company, having developed a new source of power – mako energy – obtained an economic stranglehold over the city. Today, the Shinra dynasty oversees the management of the city, under the eye of the present head of the family, Rufus Shinra (![[info]](http://l-stat.livejournal.com/img/userinfo.gif)
rex_imperator).
All has been well for years, but murmurs of dissent are starting to arise in the wings. There are those who oppose Shinra, descrying the de facto dictatorship. There are those who, concerned about rumours that mako energy is the very lifeblood of the planet, oppose the use of mako power. And then there are those who wish to seize control of the city and the Helios network itself.
All of these factions are starting to band together, lured by promises and combined by their hatred of Shinra, under the common name of Avalanche. The first few stones have been thrown, and fullscale rebellion threatens to break out.
Gaia is based at least loosely on the world of Final Fantasy VII. However, no background knowledge of the game is necessary. While the modern world is very much like our own, and most Midgar citizens believe themselves as ordinary as the next, things that are little understood still lurk under the surface.
There is the lifestream – the life energy of the planet, from which mako energy is drawn to fuel the great reactors that power most of the world. This crystallizes into strange globes (materia) that give ordinary humans what is conveniently termed magic powers – the ability to cast spells, that heal, destroy, slow down or speed up a person, and summon powerful magical beasts, amongst others. There are rumours – legends or myths – of a mysterious race of ‘Ancients’ that came before, whose knowledge is locked into materia, whose blood may have mingled with humans, giving rise to latent, undiscovered abilities within the populace.
But this knowledge has mostly been lost, except to a select few…
About the RPG – Gameplay
This RPG (Helios) centers around the events in Crystal Midgar. There are two forms of player characters: those native to Gaia (the world that Crystal Midgar is in), and those who have come into the world via HDN. Your character may thus come from its original canon, or be adapted to a more ordinary Midgar form.
Plot driven players looking for more action are welcomed to join in the over-arcing Avalanche-Shinra conflict. Players who simply wish a more peaceful form of RP-ing may simply participate as neutral, ordinary members of Midgar, going to work, playing on HDN.
Gameplay also moves onto HDN itself, where players have to create a HDN character for their character. Roleplay is conducted in exactly the same manner as normal, except against a background of an online RPG. Since HDN is a virtual reality, players would feel like that they are truly walking amidst the myriad of the many worlds designed by Shinra, and may fight monsters, perform quests, and even trade, or simply hang out. Unless they possess any special knowledge, they will not be aware of how HDN stands as the world-between-worlds, and will not be able to exploit its secrets.
New players
New players must choose whether their character enters the RP as an original citizen of Gaia, or whether they come from another world (whether their original canon, or an adaptation thereof), and entered Midgar through HDN.
Majority of the players at present are original citizens, with their histories adapted to Midgar’s. As there is not much background on Midgar at the moment, applicants are welcomed to make up what they wish. However, note that ordinary citizens will not be aware of any special abilities they may have.
Some players may have their powers ‘activated’ to correspond to something closer to their original canon. However, in order to do so, they will have to meet the only one in the know at the moment – Nii Jieni – who has been enigmatically dispensing strange artifacts to ordinary citizens, or awakening them to the blood of the Ancients that runs in their veins. Note that they will generally have to learn how to master their powers over time, and will likely never attain the level of power they do in their original canon. The details of this, however, are up to the individual applicant, but the mods will always be happy to discuss possibilities with you. See below for contact details.
Examples of this include:
- Shinigami from Bleach, who receive their swords through some means, and start uncovering their powers slowly.
- Alchemists from Full Metal Alchemist acquiring special materia that allows them to practice their art.
- Characters from Kingdom Hearts receiving keyblades, or their weapons and the ability to control the Heartless that are presently swarming the city (see ‘Ongoing Plot’, below).
For world travelers, the method of their traversing the worlds is up to the individual applicant, but they may have done so as a result of a door being opened in their world that they stepped through or were sucked through, and yet others may have been invited by a mysterious scientist identifying as Nii Jieni (crows_cry). They may or may not arrive with all their powers; powerful characters are advised to limit themselves so as to bring them in line with the others.
Potential applicants who are uncertain of how to apply or wish to discuss how to bring their character in may email theheliosadmin at HeliosMods@hotmail.com.
New players will be met and welcomed by a more experienced player, to help them settle in. Depending on which side of the conflict they may wish to end up on, this may be a recruiter for Avalanche, or for Shinra. However, there is no necessity of choosing sides; the recruitment will likely take place in character, and your character may not be convinced of the lovely job opportunities each side offers.
Characters who wish to remain neutral are also welcomed to do so. It would be helpful in your application to specify what you’re interested in doing when your character first comes into the world. Again, all applicants are welcomed to discuss this with the admin.
As such, while the plot may seem to be this massive convoluted heap of sludge at first glance, and the dynamics of gameplay seem like a rocket science, you really needn’t worry! It isn’t actually complicated, and we’ll be more than happy to settle you in. We’re always looking for new players – the more, the merrier!

This RP has been in play for a while, and the following events have unfurled:
January 2013: HDN gets mysteriously hacked and goes down for a few days. Unknown to anyone, even the hackers themselves, this was actually the work of one Nii Jieni tinkering with it to open the doors to other worlds, allowing various things in. Unfortunately, even Nii isn’t quite sure of what he’s doing.
February 2013: Random monsters invade the city. These are the Heartless (from Kingdom Hearts) and the Hollows (from Bleach). No one seems to know where they come from or why, and Shinra takes the forefront in battling them. See the admin post for details.
