5th-Sep-2008 07:08 pm - Why do you do this to me?
Marcus Cohen, why do you do this to me?  Why must you have upright torches?  Why can't you have inverted torches, which are an expressly funerary symbol?  You have to make things difficult, don't you?  I'm totally classifying them as eternal flames.  Totally.  Unless anyone has a better idea?
6th-Sep-2008 12:47 am - FIC: Phonemails in Japan [Gundam Wing, Heero & Relena]
Title: Phonemails in Japan
Author: Omnicat v''v
Rating: K+ / PG
Genre: General, with bits of Humor and a few slices of Angst
Spoilers & Desirable Foreknowledge: Up until episode ten, “Heero, Distracted by Defeat”.
Warnings: None.
Pairings: None.
Disclaimer: You know the drill. No franchise or money for me, no lawsuit from you.
Summary: Sequel to “Note Passing at St Gabriel’s”, set during episode nine. Now that Heero has changed schools, he and Relena switch from paper to phonemail to exchange messages. Poor, under–appreciated vocal chords.
Author’s Note: Lo and behold! Ohnoes, shockers! You’re kidding me! A sequel?! It really happened?! Enough with the exclamation marks already! Ahem. Okay, same old story: regularly formatted text is what happens in real life, plain font is Heero’s messages, italicized font Relena’s, every white line between messages denotes a new message. ‘Phonemail’ is the AC equivalent of text messaging: when Gundam Wing came out, cell phones hardly existed yet, so they were never featured in the series. So I took artistic license to make up my own version. Story is set between episode nine (“Portrait of a Ruined Country”) and the scene in episode ten (“Heero, Distracted by Defeat”) in which Relena arrives at the school Duo and Heero had been staying at, only to find them gone.

Phonemails in Japan )

PSAN: Not as fun-filled as “Note Passing”, sorry. I blame the fact that Heero is fresh out of the New Edwards disaster around this time, and that they wouldn’t even have been able to have this conversation if Relena’s father hadn’t died. J’s revelations were the side-effects of a heavy loss, and... OKAY, THAT’S IT, THERE WILL BE A NEXT INSTALLMENT, AND IT WILL BE MORE HUMOROUS IF IT KILLS ME.

Poor, under-appreciated vocal chords...

Well, you all know Amber is one of my favourite characters, but I decided to resist the temptation to make a really sad video tribute to her...instead this is meant to be fun, though it may just be weird.

5th-Sep-2008 03:14 pm - Image Prompt Table (Possible Pics)
I'm not saying I'll use all of these, but they are what I came up with (so far) between my own choice of search terms and the onds provided to me... some of them are definite, and names of the picture means nothing except the order they got saved to my computer (and because of uploading Image1.jpg is last in the gallery... lol).

Link is behind the cut, along with a list of previews of what some of the stories may be about...

5th-Sep-2008 04:23 pm - Friday fannish 5, and really, could any of you stop at five?
Today's Friday Fannish Five: Five favorite (or most memorable) lines of dialogue.

Oh, man, where do I *stop*? I um, kinda went with five fandoms and I should have done Buffy instead of Forever Knight, but what the heck. If I'd added Monty Python, I'd still be typing. Anyway, it's behind cuts to save friends' pages. Please feel free to do your own favorite quotes (and if you can stop at 5, more power to you!). I don't know about the rest of y'all, but it's been a week here and more laughs would be a lovely thing!

Agh! I can't believe it's the 5th of September and I still haven't finished my second essay! I also don't understand how I can both panic like a headless chicken AND procrastinate simultaneously... what is wrong with me? Seriously! This is beyond ridiculous. So. Tonight, I am finishing essay number two. I don't care how long it takes. And tomorrow, I need to read the whole of Böll's 'Der Zug war pünktlich' and plan my final essay, and preferably write a good chunk of it as well. If anyone happens to have read the book already and wants to give me their thoughts, I would be most appreciative...

In summary: I am an idiot and should have written these essays two months ago.

I'm slowly learning that, if I think about everything that needs to be done, I freak out. If I look at something in the big picture, instead of each piece at a time, it overwhelms me. This is easier to have happen if I'm already emotionally worked up for some reason (witness the mixing bowl panic attack, shutting down recently, etc.). Fortunately, my anxiety pills usually help. Listing also helps, so I look at the pieces of piece, one at a time.

For now, wait for the anxiety meds to work, and then back to what I was doing.

5th-Sep-2008 07:20 pm - Time to get serious
The academic year has unofficially entered into its final phase with only exam prep and ECA's (or summary TMA's) left to complete. Final exams are in about six weeks and the last deadlines in about three weeks. It's going to be a very busy six weeks, I suspect. I started on the S104 ECA a few days ago, but I'm still working on the first question. It's hard going. I'm almost finding my level 3 course easier at this moment. I have to finish reading two more books and complete the assignment about them, then I can concentrate on revision.

I'm aiming for a distinction in one of my courses, so I better focus on school and not much else those next six weeks (although there is always the need for a little distraction, once in a while ;-) I'm already missing fanfic as I haven't written (or read, for that matter) anything in days! I do want to focus on my studies as best I can, but I also want to finish those stories. Even if they suck. Which they probably do.

Bought some bilingual books of ebay. They arrived today but although the seller claimed they were from a non-smoking household, they still reek of cigarettes. Although I would probably have bought them either way. I had a hard time locating any Japanese/'any of the many languages hexicode can read' bilingual books in the first place and they were pretty cheap too. I had a quick look and although they appear to be aimed at people learning English, they look pretty good. Aside from the actual plots. But they are kid's books so the vocabulary should be fairly simple. The only thing that bugs me at first glance is the lack of furigana - they make looking up kanji in the dictionary so much easier.
5th-Sep-2008 12:43 pm - The darker side of Stargate SG-1 fic
I've been reading Stargate SG-1 fic in between doing expenses. *meeps a little* This fandom has some truly inspired writers. It's not as wacky-insane as SGA fandom but, oh dark, and it does such terrible, wonderful things to our so-called heroes. It's fascinating to see Daniel Jackson, fandom Golden Boy, portrayed as the detached, ruthless -- at times, monstrous -- man he is under canon's surface.

5th-Sep-2008 11:57 am - advantages to being undead...
Apparently the air conditioning in my building has been off for two days. I didn't notice it until my boss started complaining about how her office was like an oven and then later told me that the air conditioning was broken. I thought it was a tad warm, but not uncomfortably so.

Unexpected benefits of having virtually no body heat.
