This is a community to share your cross stitch works with other interested people. We're also here to help with any embroidery questions you have!

The moderators for this community are [info]bekki_n, [info]cathouse_blues and [info]emohdee - please be aware that you can contact any of us by emailing bekki_n and cathouse_blues at livejournal dot com and siran underscore drauka at yahoo dot com

Although this community is dedicated to cross-stitch, please don't feel that you have to stick to cross stitch! Other types of embroidery or similar crafts are welcomed.

Please however, go to the LJ FAQ for all Livejournal questions.

************

There are only a few rules here: Cut Tag any pictures, don't advertise things and don't share copyrighted material.

Pictures of your work are welcome, however I do ask that you use lj cut tags (go to the FAQ and livejournal specific tags section for help).

Don't advertise things includes advertising your auctions. If you want to advertise a community, use LJ's official page at [info]community_promo. If you'd like to organise a swap, please feel free and if you're giving stuff away, please only request payment for postage. Failure to follow these rules will result in your post being removed.

Don't share copyright material: Most, though not all, kits, charts and patterns have a statement reading something like "permission granted to copy/photocopy for personal use." "Personal use" means so you can write on it, mark it up, use highlighter, whatever – usually so you don't damage the original – but it does not mean you can give away or sell photocopies, scans, electronic files or other copies of the product for someone else's "personal use".

It's fine to post an image of the product (behind an lj-cut), or a link on where to find it, but please do not post that you will share a chart or pattern, nor links to "sharing sites". The moderators will remove such posts or comments, and those who post them will receive a warning the first time. Repeated offense will result in banning from [info]cross_stitch.

NOTE: Please be kind to your fellow members who may be under eighteen or who may read the community at work and restrict your icons to a "G" rating. If you have any question about where your icon might fall, please feel free to contact a moderator.

If you have any questions about the community, feel free to email me, and put cross-stitch community as the subject.

If you'd like to see any of the tags used by the community, and what has been posted under them, click here

OT: Back from Vegas, married, got walked down the aisle by Elvis! It was wonderful and crazy and beautiful and tacky all at the same time. Soooooooo happy!

On: I didn't take any stitching with me because, despite all assurances, I had a nightmare of coming up against a screener with an attitude and losing something a bit more substantial than just a needle or a pair of kid's snips. Good thing, too, because coming out of Vegas I saw just that happen to a stitcher two screeners over. The screener yanked the needle out of the linen and ripped it but good. I about cried for the poor woman. I wanted to get over to her and lend some support, but we had about 10 minutes to make our gate before loading (thanks to the HOUR AND A HALF of cattle herding we went through just to get through security).

Hi everyone,

I know this question came up not far back, but I wasn't sure of the answer after reading the posts.

I am working on a baby birth record for a baby who is going to come early... she was due 10/7, but the doctors seem to think she's going to be over 10 pounds by then, so the latest they'll let Danielle go is 10/2.

I am going on a business trip the last week in September and if I can't bring it with me, I don't have a chance of finishing.

Obviously, I have the needle, but I also have a pair of scissors, which are sharp, and don't have blunted ends.

If they won't allow the scissors, I can probably make due with my nail clippers, but if the needle goes, I'm out of luck. I'll be in a business hotel in Dallas with no transportation, and they may stock scissors or sharp-type things, but I doubt crafting needles. :)

Think I should try for the needle but leave the scissors at home? I'm carrying everything on... I travel light... so I won't have any checked baggage.

Thanks in advance!
28th-Aug-2007 12:26 pm - Needles on planes?
Summer, STOP, Cross Stitch, Darren Hayes, Storm
Hey,

This is kinda random I know, but I'm going on holiday in 22 days. Flying from London Gatwick to Cyprus. 4 and a half hours, which could be perfect stitching time.
My mum said that I could take my things in my hand luggage.
I then read someone on here was planning on taking their stitching on a plane (not sure where from though) and somebody replied saying they haven't been able to take a needle on a plane for ages.

Does anybody know?
13th-Jun-2007 09:12 pm - Where in the USA (and CA) are shops?

I know a lot of people ask this question, so if you don't get the Silver Needle's email newsletter, here's hope for you!

Here's the URL: http://www.thesilverneedle.net/books.php?osCsid=e7ff1bd067117fad90a2a26e3ea3ed19

Here's the blurb:
Oh my gosh... this is a HAVE TO HAVE book if you *EVER* drive anywhere, because it's a directory of needlework shops across the USA! 261 Pages of shop listings from all 50 states AND Canada... each state is listed in ABC order... and then, each shop is listed with either a line-listing or picture ad. What makes this book so powerfully useful to us stitchers, is that everything is shown on maps referenced by the US Interstate highway system!!! (Canada's, too!) Choose a state... the entry page shows the entire state, Interstate roads, and numbered 'bullet points.' You can see at AT A GLANCE just how close you'll be driving to any shops... then... take a look at their ad, and see what they might have to tempt you into making a teeny-weeny detour on your trip!

This book in incredible!!! We loved it years ago, and they had not done another for quite some time, so this is really a treat! (Due to be re-published in 2 years -- June of 2009) -- your 2007/09 Edition will be tattered and worn by then... filled with fun notes about various visits... great places you stayed along the way... and fun (or strange!) restaurants you stopped at! The listings include needlepoint, cross stitch, yarn and knitting shops... this is SERIOUS READING!!!

And the best part: It's only TWELVE BUCKS!?!?

Edit: And of course I should note that you can probably find it in places other than The Silver Needle...

Tuesday morning I'm hopping on a flight to Jamiaca (I can't wait to get away from this damned weather - where in the hell is spring????).  I was thinking about taking my stitching with me.  I figured it would help pass some time on the plane, but I do realize scissors aren't going to be permitted.  What about the needles?  (Heaven forbid I may use them to carve somebody's eye out or puncture their carotid artery - which would take great aim and skill on my part.)

I have other things to keep my occupied on the flight - I can read or do Soduko puzzles.  Once I hit Jamaica I'll be too busy with rum runners in hand to worry about stitching.  :)  Give me a book, a chair, free rum and the ocean and I'm happy as a clam.  (I wouldn't want to stitch on the beach anyway for fear of getting it dirty.

Do you think I would be able to get through with embroidery/tapestry needles on my carry on, or should I just leave it alone and keep it at home?

Thanks.
17th-Sep-2005 04:44 pm - I have two silly questions:
catpower, NGoldin, zadie
1.) I want to bring some cross stitching on my flight to NYC but am not sure what the rules are about bringing scissors on board. Would a small pair of kid scissors be reprimanded in a US airport? Should I bring nail clippers instead?

2.) I recently bought an 8x8 q-snap. With my smaller pieces I'm having a hard time getting the fabric tight over the canvas. The fabric lays over the box fine-it's when I put the snaps over the spread fabric when things get semi-complicated/annoying.

(cross-posted to [info]knitting):

As I recently did this over on knitting as a PSA, I thought I would also share that post here, attempting to anticipate any questions about what can and can't be taken on airplanes in the U.S.:

http://www.tsa.gov/

A MUST read for anyone traveling by air...

Permitted and Prohibited Items (.pdf)

A page specifically for Transporting Knitting Needles & Needlepoint (link thanks to [info]sarakate!)

2004 Holiday Season Travel Tips (link thanks to [info]kightp!)

I have personally never had any problems carrying large (US:15) or smaller aluminum straight knitting needles, bamboo circulars, bamboo DPNs, crochet hooks, embroidery needles (or any other part of my cross-stitch stuff), safety scissors, or nail clippers without a nail file. I had more trouble with carry-on security in foreign airports (Heathrow, Sheremetyevo) than U.S. domestically.

If you are concerned that you might have your craft items confiscated out of your carry-on baggage, take an SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) large enough to contain the items, just in case.

[info]bekki_n, if you see this, could you possibly either put a link to it in the Community Info or Memories for future reference, too?
