This is a community to share your cross stitch works with other interested people. We're also here to help with any embroidery questions you have!

The moderators for this community are [info]bekki_n, [info]cathouse_blues and [info]emohdee - please be aware that you can contact any of us by emailing bekki_n and cathouse_blues at livejournal dot com and siran underscore drauka at yahoo dot com

Although this community is dedicated to cross-stitch, please don't feel that you have to stick to cross stitch! Other types of embroidery or similar crafts are welcomed.

Please however, go to the LJ FAQ for all Livejournal questions.

************

There are only a few rules here: Cut Tag any pictures, don't advertise things and don't share copyrighted material.

Pictures of your work are welcome, however I do ask that you use lj cut tags (go to the FAQ and livejournal specific tags section for help).

Don't advertise things includes advertising your auctions. If you want to advertise a community, use LJ's official page at [info]community_promo. If you'd like to organise a swap, please feel free and if you're giving stuff away, please only request payment for postage. Failure to follow these rules will result in your post being removed.

Don't share copyright material: Most, though not all, kits, charts and patterns have a statement reading something like "permission granted to copy/photocopy for personal use." "Personal use" means so you can write on it, mark it up, use highlighter, whatever – usually so you don't damage the original – but it does not mean you can give away or sell photocopies, scans, electronic files or other copies of the product for someone else's "personal use".

It's fine to post an image of the product (behind an lj-cut), or a link on where to find it, but please do not post that you will share a chart or pattern, nor links to "sharing sites". The moderators will remove such posts or comments, and those who post them will receive a warning the first time. Repeated offense will result in banning from [info]cross_stitch.

NOTE: Please be kind to your fellow members who may be under eighteen or who may read the community at work and restrict your icons to a "G" rating. If you have any question about where your icon might fall, please feel free to contact a moderator.

2nd-Jul-2008 07:53 pm - My LNS
I Am So Camp
I could have screamed today!  Well I squeaked actually!

My local LNS in Leicester has just taken stock of their new Christmas stock and you have excuse the pun here, there are some absolute crackers to be had.

There is a Winnie The Pooh book FREE if I brought twenty or more DMC threads (might have to wait until Friday!) and new peel offs and paper.  The choice is huge but my bank balance will shrink further if I don't watch it.

I pleaded with them, "I hate you lot!" and they just smiled "that's temptation for you."

Don't you just love it when you just spent the day before buying some new CDs and this happens the next day!

Am supposed to be saving up some money to become a Judoon as well and saving some money for Cambridge Folk Festival at the end of this month.

AAAARRRRRGH can I win the Lottery on Saturday pretty please!!

Perfect time for stocking up :)
20th-May-2008 10:21 am - Nease's Needlework in Decatur, GA.
stitchery
This past weekend, I went to Atlanta to visit friends and go to the Georgia Renaissance Festival. The festival was fantastic and there were some gorgeous pieces of various fiber arts both being worn and being sold.

While I was in Atlanta, I took the opportunity to go and visit Nease's Needlework in Decatur. It's a great little shop and I only get to get down there a couple times of year at best.

I just wanted to rave a few minutes about the place. It's a cozy little store (as many LNS are) and the folks there were great. Upon seeing that I use a cane, Susan asked if I needed a chair while I was looking through patterns and was very sweet about bringing it to me.

The selection of patterns was quite nice and I ended up buying two more of the JBW designs because I'm enjoying the French Country Lark so much.

My only regret is that we didn't get there until late in the day, so I didn't have as much leisure to browse as I would have liked.
13th-May-2008 07:48 pm - I *heart* The Rocking Horse
star book

The Rocking Horse is my LNS.  It is a *wonderful* store.  The staff is friendly, knowledgeable, service-oriented.  They have so many models, I can’t tell you.  Every wall is covered in models–floor to ceiling.  There is no empty wall space.  The shop has two large front windows, both of which are always filled with seasonally current models.  They are always shifting models around. If you need inspiration, this is the place to find it.

Such is the power of The Rocking Horse.

30th-Mar-2008 10:52 pm - Joann Fabrics disappointment
ADD

So I was at my local Joann's today, looking to stock up on floss.  I was slightly disappointed to find that the price had gone up from $.25 to $.29.  Yeah, it's only a few cents difference, but I tend to do large projects with lots of colors, and I like to save a little money if possible.

Is there a cheaper place to get floss, either a store or online?

Thanks everyone, happy stitching!! :)

22nd-Mar-2008 05:19 pm - ACMoore
KissPandas
Well, where I am, we've only really had Michael's to go to. (Okay, there's JoAnn's, but they leave me kind of 'ehhh'. They're mostly sewing, and smidgeons of other things. And WalMart's given up on anything that isn't scrapbooking for kids...)

About a year or two ago, ACMoore opened up. And hour and a bit away from me. Ugh - too far.

The husband pointed out in last Sunday's newspaper that a new ACMoore was opened now just 15-20 minutes from us. Wheeee!

I left him with the kid this afternoon and went and took a peek.

My first impression: Good size. Probably about as big, maybe a tad smaller, as the Michael's nearby.

Other impressions:
Cross-stitch: Okay, so the cross-stitch section is tiny; probably about 1/2 of Michael's, and not much different.
Plastic Canvas: Good selection of colored canvas in 7-count; only white in 10-count. No 14 count. Good shapes collection. Large pieces soft and ultra-stiff; no glow-in-the-dark. No Needleloft (now Annies Attic) yarn.
Scissors: THEY HAVE A SET OF FISKARS REALLY-FOR-LEFTIES 8" SCISSORS!!! $14 (USD). I am SOOO saving up for those suckers. Problem is, I've cut righty for so long, I don't know if I *can* cut lefty! :) No lefty small embroidery scissors, though (I don't expect that at all), so I'll still have to order them online from the UK. hiss

Probably a good quarter of the store is scrapbooking and stamping. Their bead section is good, slightly smaller than Michael's, but a different variety, so combining shopping at both makes to good things better.

So it's nice to have variety.
9th-Jan-2008 05:34 pm - locating stores
boilermish
I'm just getting back into cross stitch, after about 15 years not touching it. I finished a piece my Mom had started before passing away and gave it to my sister at Christmas (forgot to take a picture). Now I've been bitten by the bug and want to do more little projects :) I have 2 more kits Mom had and then I'll be left to my own devices. I've tried to locate a store other than JoAnns and Michaels that carries cross stitch supplies (luckily both in my area still do, though their selection kind of sucks) and haven't had any luck. Does anyone know a website that has a comprehensive listing of brick & mortar stores that carry stitch supplies? Or does anyone live in the metro Detroit area and can recommend some? :) I know of the Rocking Horse, but I live about an hour away from Farmington. I'm on the Northside of Oakland County, almost in Lapeer County.

TIA :)

28th-Oct-2007 01:42 am - Cross Stitch and Needlepoint Books
nazgulls
I would like to rave to you about a couple of bookstores I had the pleasures of visiting in the last couple of days. First recommendation is Acres of Books, a used bookstore on 240 Long Beach Blvd, situated between 2nd Street and 3rd Street, near the Walmart in Long Beach on 7th Street. I can seriously rave about the great craft book selections they have. My goodness, an entire section on Rugmaking. The needlecraft section is chock full of pattern books anywhere from the 1920 to 1990. Not just that, they got illustrated history books on needlepoints, too. I can't even begin to describe the crochet and knitting selections. They'll hold any numbers of books for you up to one week. So, I had the hold the Ottoman Embroidery Book, a coffee table book that actually shows the luxuriousness of Ottoman embroidery, that also show you how to stitch them. The other cross stitch book I had them hold for me is a book that shows embroidery across the world and they also offer the patterns of the embroidery that's pictured for stitching. I, so need to go back and take home the rugmaking section. Unfortunately, downtown Long Beach is doing a revitalization project that involves kicking the store out of the lease. So, Acres of Books might not be around anymore next year. You also have to meet Penny, the store cat.
My second recommendation is the Crown Books Liquidation Center on 8655 S. Sepulveda Blvd between Manchester and La Tijera, next to Trader Joe's, and a block from Petco near LAX. Their craft selection is very nice and each of the books are around five dollars. I came out with five needlepoint books that I absolutely can't do without and I only spent 25 dollars. They also have several Donna Kooler books that I so need to get next time. Now, being the nature of both the stores mentioned, you can't really go in with a specific titles in mind and find it. But, what you'll find is some great books that you never knew that had existed. In a couple of weeks, I'm going back and this time I am going to use the shopping cart.

13th-Oct-2007 04:45 pm - christmas ornaments
cute kitty
Hi Everyone! I could use some help. I really wanted to make some ornaments for people this year. My situation is that my supply of cross stitch plastic canvas (the kind with smaller holes, not the regular plastic canvas from walmart) is about to run out and I still have quite a few ornaments left to complete. The problem however, is that I am at college in a very small town (the kind where if you can't find it at walmart, you ain't gonna find it) that doesn't have any stores near by where i can find the stuff i need (and my car is unreliable right now so i can't drive down the mountain to search a hobby lobby ~ i go to App State).

So, my question is: What website(s) can I order this stuff from and (hopefully this doesn't sound silly) what do I type in when I search for it so that I don't come up with the big plastic canvas instead of the small stuff that I need?

Thanks in advance for the help! I really appreciate it.

Can anyone recommend some stitchery stores in central London, and if possible, directions by tube or bus? I seem to recall there's a fairly large selection in one of the big stores, but I can't for the life of me remember which one. Thanks!

White peacock
Hello everyone...I am going to be in Atlanta shortly on biz but then I'll have free time to see the sites with a friend who lives there.

Can any of you lovely people recommend a needlework shop in the Atlanta GA area?  I have gone online and found some, but not all seem to be still in business, and I don't want to have to make my dear friend drive around higgledy-piddledy.  It's going to be bad enough since he doesn't stitch; I am loathe to cause him even more pain!

Thanks in advance!
6th-Jul-2007 11:47 pm - Toronto Area Sale
Pammyla sig tag :-D
For anyone who's in the GTA, The Enchanted Needle (www.theenchantedneedle.net (I think) ) is having a midsummer sale today (well... it's a little late for that...) and tomorrow.
Lots of stuff and all of their charts and kits are either 25 or 30% off.
'Tis a good sale, so if you can go you should!

OMG The World Is Ending
So, I'm moving across the state and what's the first thing I think of?

Ohmigod, where will I get my stitching supplies?!?!?!?!

I have already found a place. And it's got a bunch of cool classes that it offers, as well as a sit and stitch where you come bring your stitching and hang out with other stitchers!!

I feel like I'm in heaven.

(It's Distinctive Stitches, in case you're wondering).
19th-Jun-2007 05:27 pm - Taking a trip
I am going to be in the Washington,DC area in late August. I would like to shop in a local store for a cross stitch pattern that would commemorate my trip there. Does anyone have any suggestions? I will be staying very close to the Mall. Thank you.
13th-Jun-2007 09:12 pm - Where in the USA (and CA) are shops?
Stitchers
I know a lot of people ask this question, so if you don't get the Silver Needle's email newsletter, here's hope for you!

Here's the URL: http://www.thesilverneedle.net/books.php?osCsid=e7ff1bd067117fad90a2a26e3ea3ed19

Here's the blurb:
Oh my gosh... this is a HAVE TO HAVE book if you *EVER* drive anywhere, because it's a directory of needlework shops across the USA! 261 Pages of shop listings from all 50 states AND Canada... each state is listed in ABC order... and then, each shop is listed with either a line-listing or picture ad. What makes this book so powerfully useful to us stitchers, is that everything is shown on maps referenced by the US Interstate highway system!!! (Canada's, too!) Choose a state... the entry page shows the entire state, Interstate roads, and numbered 'bullet points.' You can see at AT A GLANCE just how close you'll be driving to any shops... then... take a look at their ad, and see what they might have to tempt you into making a teeny-weeny detour on your trip!

This book in incredible!!! We loved it years ago, and they had not done another for quite some time, so this is really a treat! (Due to be re-published in 2 years -- June of 2009) -- your 2007/09 Edition will be tattered and worn by then... filled with fun notes about various visits... great places you stayed along the way... and fun (or strange!) restaurants you stopped at! The listings include needlepoint, cross stitch, yarn and knitting shops... this is SERIOUS READING!!!

And the best part: It's only TWELVE BUCKS!?!?

Edit: And of course I should note that you can probably find it in places other than The Silver Needle...

28th-May-2007 07:45 am - Local Needle Store in Maryland

I'm going to be around the Jessup/Columbia/Silver Spring, Maryland area soon and was wondering if anyone knew of a good cross stitch store in the area. We might even head over to Baltimore. I've been to Stitching Pretty in Laurel, MD, but would like to find another store to visit and add to my overloaded stash! Thanks!!
22nd-May-2007 11:04 am - In search of a pencil holder

I'm hoping you stitchin' geniuses can help me find something: a pencil holder to stitch! I've seen these in a couple of the different pattern books I've checked out of the library, and the books usually refer to them as if I know exactly where to find them ("follow manager's directions..."). The ones I've seen are triangular, with Aida in the three sides, and it looks as if they're made of your basic clear rigid plastic. I have the idea to make one for a friend's birthday later this summer (he's a nautical nut, and I found some neat sailboat diagrams that I think will fit nicely.)

I've tried my local stitch shop, but they don't have a lot of the bric-a-brac type things (trinket boxes and the like), and I looked at Hobby Lobby and Joanne. I looked online at another bigger store in the next county, and I tried 123stitch, so I'm running out of ideas. I have a few more online places to look, but at this point I'm not feeling hopeful. Have any of you folks seen such a thing, either in person or online/in books? Is this is a fool's errand? (Wouldn't be the first time.... ) Thanks for any hints or ideas!

Would anybody know of any needle shops in Singapore? My friend is going and I asked to her to look for a few things for me. Preferably those with a good selection of linen and other eavenweave fabric. While I don't lack the basic supplies here, I'm desperate for better fabric!

I poked around online, but found mostly Ebay ones... :\

26th-Mar-2007 08:47 am - Chicago?
church clothes
This might be a bit random, but I was wondering if any of you wonderful stitchers were either in Chicago and/or knew of a good cross-stitch store there? I'm sure I could find something online, but I'd rather know from someone who has actually been there that it's pretty cool.

I mostly look for cool patterns, though I did just find a pattern that requires Kreinik and Caron Watercolors so stocking that would be a plus. Fiber bought on vacation counts as a souvenir!

Can anyone help me out? :o)
