So, I love cross stitch and have been stitching like a madwoman lately.. but I am curious,  have any of you tried punch needle? I was checking out some kits at Ac Moore this weekend and they look relativley easy.  I thought I might try some for christmas gifts this year.. is it difficult??

I would like to find this out also... my mother in law cleaned out her craft stuff and gave me manual and battery operated punch needle things and for the life of me I can't figure it out!

Battery operated? I didn't even know they made such a thing! Very interesting. Sounds dangerous though! :-)

yeah it's weird but i haven't been able to get it to work. it holds a big spool at the top so you can work and not have to reload or something.

I tried it many, many, many, many years ago. I sucked. I'm thinking of picking up one of these new little kits and trying again though.

I just posted some punch needling examples in a post on the main board! :-)

ETA: It is a special tool that looks like a pen but has a hollow needle at the end. You feed the thread through the tool. You work from the back of the fabric and punch loops of thread through the fabric. Kits usually look like a coloring book page on fabric and you fill in the different sections with different colors (like the wedding sampler that I posted). Or if you freehand you can blend the colors together (like the Georgia O'Keefe piece I posted).

I've seen these kits in the Keepsake Needleworks catalogue, but as I wasn't sure about how easy or how well I might like it, I haven't picked up any of the tools.

There do appear to be some cute pieces you can make, so I'll be interested in hearing from anyone who has successfully done this. :)

Don't know how often you check out the board so wanted you to know that I posted some successful pieces in a post in the community. :-)

I tried it and I hated it. I just bought a little kit and I don't know if it was because the material was cheap or what but I kept pulling my stitches out. I really like the look of punch needle though so what I think I might do instead is work a punch needle design in french knots. French knots seem a lot more durable and look nicer, I think.

I loved it (not quite as much as cross stitching but it was fun and different). I have completed 3 pieces. One from a kit and two that I 'free handed'. I will post them in a separate post so that they don't get lost in the comments. :-)
