WTF?
Members excusing the language, of course, but why the hell does every troll in the LJ universe feel the need to come over here and try to start controversy? Have we been nominated for a "come here and bug us" award? Or are we just lucky?

Edited to add: I'm not suggesting that we change anything, though as it is mentioned in the comments below we may "need" to go Members Only on comments. I'm also not trying to spark a debate. This was more a post meant to send a giant eye-rolling to the stupid people who troll the internet trying to spark jackass debates and turn friendly community members against each other. The reason I like this community is that everyone gets along...even in the "scroll frame vs. hoop" debate we're all still friends. One of the reasons I've been really thrilled about getting back into cross stitching is that this community is so open, with everyone posting ideas and projects and roadblocks and such...it is fun. So, to the trolls of the internet, back off! You can't shake us, and you really just end up looking stupid when you try, so don't bother in the first place!

It seems they're feasting off people's political icons now.

Now this is just a suggestion, and I don't want to start a huge fuss over this, so please don't flame me. But maybe we should keep the political icons 'down a tad'. If we don't want to start political trolling or debates, it might be the best thing, at LEAST until the US election is over.
Do politics and needlework mix? With the trolling appearing, maybe not right now!

If someone tries to troll on one of my posts, you'll all have to excuse the language that will occur. I don't take kindly to people like that at all. I'm all for promoting a community where everyone can 'live in peace' ;)

I do see what you are saying about the icons, I always try to change my default icon when posting in communities...but actually forget in my last post. But really, should we have to? The ones making comments previously were not even members of this community. There are several things you can do, such as only allowing members to post and using only one particular icon the the owner of the community uses...at least it used to be like that. Sad that you have to even come to that I think.

With all due respect, you can certainly post with whatever icon you want. But you can't expect everyone to agree with it. Being able to express your opinion means that other people can express theirs too. Your icon was fairly confrontational, so if you use it, don't be surprised if people respond in kind.

I wasn't directing all my comments just at your icon. I barely even noticed it until the troll started trying to hook you into a debate about politics!

I've just noticed recently there's been OT threads appearing with people commenting on political icons, and then someone else of a different political preference appears and some hurtful things can be said.

We're a needlework community. The only debates should be about hoops versus Q-snaps versus frames (which would be the winner? I've only tried hoops so I can't comment hehe).

Coincidentally I also have a headache, and could not start a proper row. With planning however, I think we could get a real beauty going. How does Wednesday at noon sound? Now to find some trolls who are free at that time...

Yeah, I'm definitely for making it members-only. i don't know how i feel about restricting userpics, BUT i can see how the impassioned could get in a tizzy over an overtly Repub or Dem icon. but, for crying out loud, it's a fucking cross-stitch community, you know? it's partially amusing that there are people out there with time to spare and desire to troll our humble community....

I think some of us have forgotten what this community is about. It's about stitching, sharing stories about stitching, and sharing pictures of our stitching. If it's not about stitching, and it's negative, DON'T SAY IT. We should all be mature about this. Unfortunately the internet has given people the the courage to say what they'd normally NOT SAY to someone's face. Don't like an icon? IGNORE IT. Don't like someone's work, IGNORE IT.

Just because you have the right to free speech, doesn't mean you have the right to be a jerk. Get off the internet and do something more productive with your hands if you feel you need to be a moron.

In defense of myself, I personally was NOT offended about what the other person said about the icon...I agree, everyone is intitled to their own opinions. I am offended that someone that isnt a member of the community saw fit to only make a comment on an icon, and offended that as stated, this is a cross-stitch community and all political talk should be kept out. And like said, if you dont like someone's icon, ignore it, same with their work. And yes I was surprised too that the person that made a comment was from the UK too..lol.

And by the way, I deleted the last comment, although this one says the exact same thing, I c/p, I didnt change the icon again...and enough has been said over it to me.

Again, I apologize to all, every single one of you, for forgetting to change my default icon when I posted before. I would never have intentionally started a political debate in this community, so very sorry.

Actually, this didn't surprise me at all, since it's how much of the rest of the world views our current president. I was more surprised that it was a non-member, because even though I read a lot of posts before joining, I didn't comment. But politics has a way of doing that to people.

I just think it's wrong to jump down someone's throat because they forgot to change their icon from default. Mistakes happen. Perhaps, what really irks me is that it's not even a member of this community that pulled that stunt. In fact, they probably wouldn't know Aida from Hardanger if it up and bit them.

People getting offended when no offense was meant is often how wars, be it live fire or internet flame wars, get started.

Whenever I post in this community, I try to change my icon because my default has the f-word in it, but I don't always remember.

Also, when I read this community, I hardly even look at the icons, I just want to see the work and connect with the people. But isn't a persons statement of themselves, so critisizing some one who has a political one is like repressing them? Changing it to respect the members is cool(esp if it's pornographic or has language in it), but saying "I don't like your icon because I like Bush" or "I don't like your opinion" seems to be going too far. To me, anyway.

Sorry if any of this has been said, there's a LOT of comments in here. And I read most of them throughout the day, but I ended up having to stop eventually!

I have seen very many political icons on livejournal and many of them I don't agree with. However, I've never replied to any of them to start a political debate. I am fully aware that everyone is entitled to their own opinions. I think it's fine for someone to say they like the icon. But I do think it's rude to comment and start a debate about their political choice.

I mean, this was politics. But let's say someone had a certain cartoon icon or something. It would be fine for people to say they liked it, but very rude for someone to just be like "I don't like your icon". People just need to grow up. I seriously feel sometimes like I am the only grown up in the world, and I'm not even that old for an adult (22). Everyone just needs to get over themselves and respect others.

And by the way, I'm sure for those Kerry supporters out there, if someone had posted that they liked the icon, and then someone else responded saying they didn't, you wouldn't still feel that everyone is entitled to their opinions by posting. You'd probably gang up on the one that said they didn't, contrary to how right now you're saying that everyone has their own opinon.

Not to speak for all the Kerry supporters, but I disagree on your last statement. And I don't think it's quite fair to presume what we in general would 'probably' do. A person's opinion is their own to express and I don't see why they shouldn't express it on any part of the post, from the icon to the message itself. That doesn't change based on the situation. If I don't agree with someone or they don't agree with me, hey c'est la vie. That's what makes life interesting :D

There is no 'lack of respect' in this community. I have never seen any (apart from the Troll incident). Yes I'm all gung-ho for freedom of speech, it's something we're blessed with as Western nations, and as human beings (albeit some more than others).

But it's just kinda sad (not as in lame), and mildly annoying, when someone comes to discuss cross-stitch, exactly what this community is made for, and some one comments on their icon, and thus sparks a political debate. Especially in such a political environment, as the USA elections, which frankly affects the whole world. Some people may stitch to break away from the stress of politics in everyday life, and to escape the constant media exposure of the two main contenders.

But in a way it's good, because it shows more people are willing to vote nowadays than before. Maybe it'll all die down come the end of the year? I'm hoping no more of those trolls reappear, because frankly I enjoy cross-stitch and I enjoy showing what I've done to people on here, without feeling like I will be attacked.
