Joann Fabrics disappointment

So I was at my local Joann's today, looking to stock up on floss.  I was slightly disappointed to find that the price had gone up from $.25 to $.29.  Yeah, it's only a few cents difference, but I tend to do large projects with lots of colors, and I like to save a little money if possible.

Is there a cheaper place to get floss, either a store or online?

Thanks everyone, happy stitching!! :)

I noticed that too! But Michael's charges 35 cents, so it's still better at JoAnn's then at Michael's. Do you have a Michael's near you? They had a sale last month or so where it was 25 cents, also. So if you ARE near a Michael's, I suggest signing up for the mailing list or checking the weekly ad (I think they have one) for any floss sales. That's the only suggestion I can make, sorry. Good luck!

25-33 cents is pretty standard. Your best bet would be to watch out for the 5/$1.00 sales.

Yes - or if you are really lucky, 6/$1.00. I stocked up when they had one of those several years ago. What we need is a list of the most commonly used colors, so we can at least get those! (For a while, I had almost every single color thanks to my stock up, but I've noticed that I continually run out of the same several colors!)

I have the same problem with running out of the same colors.....or else accidentally stocking up on the wrong colors! I tried shopping at Pat Catan's (local discount craft store in Ohio.....although their cross stitch selection is poor, I mainly go there for needles -- $.97 for DMC needles!!!! :) ), but they only have certain colors. I have a checklist that I found online that lists all the color numbers, I usually start one for each project, that way I can check off the colors as I put them in my basket.

Thank goodness for good sales.....I spend way more than necessary to try to stock up!!

Heh.

Joann's is still a cheap place for floss. Small LNSes can't compete on price and Michael's is more expensive as well. Floss is also tons more expensive in other countries. We're lucky with how cheap it is.

Where have you found it that cheap? The best I've found is Spotlight (3 hours away) for 99C AUD!

A couple of sellers on eBay - within Australia this seller seems to be quite reliable. There is also a girl in Malaysia that sells DMC floss cheap too. I am tempted to try either/or or both of them, depending on what feedback I get from my post.

Looking at their webpage, not in the NT. :) There's Lincrafts everywhere BUT the Northern Territory and Tassie.

JoAnn's is actually huge. There's a smaller branch right by my house and a "superstore" about 10 minutes away from me. That one is _huge_ (like, WalMart store-sized)

Considering the average price per skein in the UK is around 60p - so that is about $1.20 or so, I don't think you will get any sympathy from UK stitchers.

was just about to say the same thing - I would love to get a skein for the equivalent of 29 cents! I'm off to Canada on holiday tomorrow, does anyone have a rough guide to prices over there - if it's much cheaper I may stock up for my next project...

There are Michaels stores around Canada, see if there is one near where you'll be. http://www.michaels.com/art/online/home has a store locator. I think their floss at my local store is around CAD$0.50/skein, so sounds like it would save you a lot vs UK prices.

Hobby Lobby did the same thing recently, went from 4/$100 to $.29. It's just one more cost creeping higher and higher. It all adds up.

Well, about a year ago, Joann's dropped the price FROM $.29 to $.25... I'm not terribly surprised it went back up to $.29.

29 cents sounds pretty cheap to me, too (and I am in the States). I think that if that price sounds expensive, your best bet is to keep an eye out for the occasional sales where skeins are 5/$1. What I normally do is keep a running list for my projects (including how many skeins of each I need), and when one of those sales comes along, I go in and go a bit crazy buying colors. It becomes an expensive trip to the craft store, but it saves me money in the long run, and fewer trips to the store (saving gas money as well).

With gas prices going up, the cost of transporting goods is going up, and I don't doubt that's part of the mark up.

I noticed Joann's had gone up in price. So have AC Moore and Michaels. Joann's is still the cheapest. I just keep an eye out for sales. A couple of weekends ago, Michaels had a 2-day sale with floss 4/0.99, so I kitted up a couple of projects.

Wow... you are so lucky! The cheapest I have EVER found it was a Hobby Lobby where they have 4/$1.00 sales every once in a while, but unfortunately, they won't be opening the Hobby Lobby by my house until a couple months from now, so that's kind of out of the way... Ben Franklin crafts has sold them for as much as $0.79 a piece... I only go there when I'm desperate for a color lol. I usually go to Michael's and pay around $0.50-$0.60 a piece. I haven't found them much cheaper online... Amazon.com and Marilyns.com both run around $.63 and I have to wait on the shipping.

The price was 29 cents at Jo-Ann's for years, but then I stocked up on all of the colors during the 5/$1.00 or 6/$1.00 sales, so I never really paid much attention to the normal price, and I've not had a reason to buy any in the last year or so.

Anyway, Jo-Ann's will be your best bet. I think online they sell is for about 60 cents. I might be wrong though, I only looked at it briefly and remarked on the price difference a while ago.

Since Wallyworld got rid of their stitching stuff (and now all of their fabric) the prices for my AC Moore and Michaels have gone up to 35 and 36 cents respectively. Thankfully, I'm stocked up thanks to that mistaken sale by Hancock Fabrics and Wallyworld selling floss for ten cents. I'm good for now and have just needed a few colors lately.
