Question for the mods, re Golden Kite Free Rose
Hi, I've only recently taken up cross stitch with a bookmark kit. Anyway, I've got the Golden Kite free rose pattern, and I'll probably be buying what I need to start it today. But after I've finished it, or possibly while I'm working on it, I'm planning on working out how to do it in purple and blue, rather than the current orange and yellow, and I wondered how you'd feel about me posting the conversions here?

(Also, I could probably use some tips on how to work on a multi-sheet pattern, if anyone's willing. Thanks)

Ooh, please do post the conversions! I have that pattern sitting around somewhere myself, and don't like orange/yellow colors all that much... (despite the icon)

Worst case, if the mods say no I'll post them on my own journal.

Ooooh. I've not done that rose because I'm not that fond of the colors. I hadn't thought of converting it. A nice lilac for Mom, maybe. Darn you, Jessara, I have enough projects!

Sorry. It's going to take me a while to get my conversion done and out, since it took me a month and a half to do about half that little bookmark kit I mentioned, so if you do one first please tell me about it. I'd love to see what your take on it is.

It will be a while before I do one, actually. I have to finish a couple of projects before I can even think about it. Given how many stitches it is, it'll probably end up being a 2009 project. I'll just start thinking about it now and start comparing colors in my free time.

Ah, well I'd still be interested when you do it, assuming we get the mod's approval for this. Can't think why we wouldn't, but...

I have that pattern, too, And I'm also not fond of the colors. A purple or blue conversion would be cool.

And I love your icon :D

That make 3, well 4 people who don't like the colours, since I probably wouldn't have thought of it if I liked them. Like I told [info]ankhet if the mods say I can't post my conversions here I'll put it up on my own livejournal, but it is going to take a while.

I can;t wait to see yoru conversion too!
As for multi page patterns, I do them the exact same as single page patterns - find the center and work out. Most patterns have 3 rows or soo shaded that overlap between pages - that makes it much easier to follow and keep your place. If you color as you go, make sure you color on the shaded bar AND the other page.
Good luck and I hope these help :)

I've got approval to post it anyway. And yes, your tips have helped.

I've posted conversions here before, as I did them for Lavender & Lace's Celtic Winter and then borrowed a conversion for Mirabilia's Titania.

And yay for Dresden Files. Am sad the show got canceled, though. :(

Oh good, I must have missed those conversions then. And yes, Dresden Files is a good series. I hadn't realised the show was cancelled, since I don't think we get it here in the UK, and I read the books anyway.

We started with the show, then read the books, and then the show got canceled. Alas.

I get a piece of cloth that I KNOW will be way big (not so much that you could easily fit two, say, but where you'd have at least 6" empty cloth on EACH side of the design. Then I just go down about 3-4" and to the the right the same amount and start stitching the upper left corner.

That's how I started the Golden Kite Free Rose, anyway. ;) Woulda been nice to see a conversion (I love purples) BEFORE I'm almost done with it. Oh well. I'd love to see it!

Thanks for the suggestion, but I'm planning to start in the centre, where there's a nice big block all in one colour. I'll be doing the pattern twice, once in the orange and yellow and once in purple and blue, so maybe you could do it again in purples later.

I haven't done that pattern, though I am working on another by GK. I work multi-page patterns in two ways:

1) if the pattern is OH-MY-LOVING-SOMETHING huge (like about 10 pages, the GK I'm doing is 83 O.o) I start in the corner. I use a post it note as reference, the regular size is 3 inches square and usually that's all you need to frame. I make a small dot and work out.

2) If it isn't so horrible large or complicated, I find the middle and go from there.

I'll take the second option then. Do you think I need to bother with gridding then?

(Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

I think gridding works best with the first option, but to be truthful, I've never done gridding that's worked. I've tried it and people swear by it, but even with the stitch the suggest, I find the thread in the way.

I'm not doing a grid on my GK and it's coming along just fine. *shrug*

Well, I'd try it out, just to see. People swear by it and I can understand the appeal (if you can make it work.) Then you'd just have to worry about the 10x10 and it wouldn't be so horrible jumping around in the pattern. But then, you might become lazy and dependent on the grid, which is as fallible as yourself and you could have a huge problem if you miscount the grid.

If you grid and count, what's the point of the grid (since you're counting anyway?)

I dunno. To me, I count each time and the grid seemed just more work so after a couple attempts, I gave it up. But as I said, people swear by it. They wouldn't dream of doing a BAP without a grid. You might be better to ask opinions on gridding to the group at large.

I do jump about a bit, but not that much, and GK patterns are solid stitching. If I try it then it will be on something where a lot of the cloth shows through.

Always nice to see a new stitcher. Especially one with a Harry Dresden icon. Hope your bookmark turns out well. Is it on cloth or plastic (that thinner punch paper)?

It's closer to finished than I thought actually. Getting the materials to start the GK rose seems to have given me a boost, and I'm almost finished with the actual cross stitching, leaving the background and detail to do in backstitch. It's on cloth, the Heritage Textile Damask Rose kit.
