Tags and Feeding the French
Questions have been raised once again about the need for a biscornu tag, given the level of current interest in that type of project. As we don't have a tag for any other kind of finishing technique, we don't feel that we as moderators should start a precedent by tagging this one.

However, have any of you thought about starting a separate biscornu community? I know there are separate communities out there for other finishes, and we think it would be a great way to concentrate all of this knowledge and ideas and enthusiasm all in one place. Please don't misunderstand: we still want and encourage you all to share any and all of your needlework projects with this community! But with a separate community you could have your own how-to tag, finishes tag, patterns tag, etc. Just a thought; be sure to let us know if you do and the name of the community so we can get it listed in the links on the sidebar immediately!!

Lessee...biscornu pincushions, biscornu earrings, biscornu paperweights, biscornu altarpieces...

OK, bad idea. But let me point out that as mods we have to keep a certain amount of order as we see fit, trying to keep things from getting completely out-of-hand, and sometimes rather confusing to keep track of for the community as a whole. What's the expression? "Keep it simple, stupid." Well, representing Stupid - who's often tired and distracted and trying to fix dinner and study for finals and you'd bloody well better put that down and quit hitting your sister - we want to keep things simple. Old tags (the MSALs) were created for one-off events and obviously haven't been used in forever. They're clutter, something we want to keep to a minimum. The parts of making a biscornu - the patterns, the assembly, the finishes - fit into existing tags, and therefore we see no need for another bit of tag clutter for a finish - especially when we do not create tags for specific finshes.

could not it intergrate with other tags?
ie: patterns, finishing, etc?

I think biscornus, like any other technique/pattern/finish, can fit neatly in the how to, pattern and finishing tags as does any other technique. Hence the frustration of the mods: we've already got sufficient tags to handle biscornu questions,

Let me first say I don't really have an opinion, one way or another. I think that caring so much about tags is kinda silly. :)

However, the part that confuses me is why it's such a big deal to add one. I mean, we have several tags that don't really get used much - msal, msal1, olympics, tags, for example - or only get used at specific seasonal times, or only while a particular project is going on. Why are those okay, but things like biscornu, or needle roll, or whatever, are not? If a community exists to meet the desires of those in the community, why not put it to an actual vote under a cut or something - if the majority of those who vote after a week want it, then add it.

After reading your edit:

I can see not wanting to make a tag for every type of finishing technique. Biscornu, needle roll, framing, needle book, etc. etc.

So why not make a "finishing techniques" tag to discuss specific ways of finishing? That would allow for more specificity than "finished piece," as well as give members ideas - I mean, how many times has the "focus on finishing" blog been mentioned? Surely there's a need to discuss the techniques in more detail than just "how to." :)

Thanks for the "finishing techniques" suggestion. It's a departure from "finished piece" and definitely has a place.

I quite like it, and will talk to the other mods about it.

As a new member of the community who has frequently used the tags to find knowledge, I think a tag "finishing techniques" would be extremely useful.

Oh, this is a good idea. Remove the one-offs and add this one. Good idea.

I don't really think removing the one-offs is a good idea. Why suddenly make it difficult for people to find previously tagged posts?

Yeah, see below. I realized that after I'd posted this response and before I'd put up the other. Oh well. Insert foot (A) into mouth (B).

I agree with [info]eliset. What is the big deal about adding a tag? I think a vote is a very good idea.

I don't that it is productive to have a separate community for every little thing. It just fragments the group and lowers participation overall.

I don't see what the big deal is either. It doesn't seem like much trouble to add one word to your list of tags. I'm sure there are plenty of people wanting to know how to make a biscornu, or looking for biscornu patterns and ideas. I think that this cross stitch community is a great place for that kind of information and I don't see why a biscornu tag shouldn't be added. That's my two cents.

The trouble is, where do you draw the line?

Why biscornu and not pillows.

Why not wall hangings?

Needle rolls?

Scissor Fobs,

Coasters

Tablecloths

Why not one for washing a piece etc.

I think that's where the mods are at - if you let this one, you have to let any request like it as well. And believe me, they will all end up requested eventually :D

so, i definitely will respect the mod's decision. however, i don't understand why having lots of tags is a problem - won't it just help people find exactly what they're looking for? and, nothing is forcing the people who post entries to tag them if they don't want to. thanks for listening, have a good day!

I agree, especially since the ljseek feature is *ahem* less than desirable.

I could go with adding a "finishing" or "finishing techniques" tag.

I'm for tags, especially in a community like this, because it can really, really help us find things we're looking for. Especially when it comes to things that come up a lot (biscornus and airline rules come to mind quickly). Finishing techniques will cover a wide variety of things as well as being easy to figure out what tag to use.

Of course, tags are only of use when they're used... ;)

I'm not for removing old tags, in the event someone wants to look up these topics. Hopefully we'll do more m-sals in the future, and more olympics.
